On Liberty by John Stuart Mill ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]

On Liberty by John Stuart Mill audiobook. Genre: philosophyFirst published in 1859, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty is a foundational work of political philosophy that asks a deceptively simple question: when, if ever, is it right for society or the state to limit an individual's freedom? Mill argues that liberty is not only a personal good but a public necessity, essential to progress, truth-seeking, and human flourishing. Moving from principles to practical tests, he introduces his famous harm principle, insisting that coercion is justified only to prevent harm to others - not to enforce morality, tradition, or majority preference. Along the way, Mill examines the dangers of social pressure and conformity, warning that public opinion can be as oppressive as law. He defends freedom of thought and speech as the engine of intellectual life, explores individuality as a vital ingredient of well-being, and considers the limits of authority in society. Clear, forceful, and provocative, this short book invites listeners into an ongoing debate about rights, responsibility, tolerance, and the boundaries of power in a free society. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 1(00:44:57) Chapter 2(01:37:36) Chapter 3(02:38:25) Chapter 4(03:27:33) Chapter 5(04:17:51) Chapter 6 Learn more about your ad choices. Love and Freindship by Jane Austen ~ Full Audiobook [comedy]

Love and Freindship by Jane Austen audiobook. Genre: comedyLove and Freindship [sic] is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790, when Austen was 14 years old. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, 'Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love,' which neatly undercuts the title.Written in epistolary form, it resembles a fairy tale as much as anything else, featuring wild coincidences and turns of fortune, but Austen is determined to lampoon the conventions of romantic stories, right down to the utter failure of romantic fainting spells, which always turn out dreadfully for the female characters. In this story one can see the development of Austen's sharp wit and disdain for romantic sensibility, so characteristic of her later novels. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 1(00:28:06) Chapter 2(00:50:59) Chapter 3 Learn more about your ad choices. Famous Men of the Middle Ages by John H. Haaren ~ Full Audiobook [history]

Famous Men of the Middle Ages by John H. Haaren audiobook. Genre: historyFamous Men of the Middle Ages by John H. Haaren (with A. B. Poland) introduces the medieval world through brisk, story-driven biographies meant to make history feel personal and vivid. Beginning with the legends and beliefs that shaped early European peoples, the book quickly moves into the stormy centuries after Rome's power broke, when Goths, Vandals, Huns, Franks, and Vikings fought for kingdoms and identity. Across a sequence of self-contained chapters, listeners meet rulers, warriors, reformers, and adventurers whose choices helped steer Europe (and its neighbors) toward the modern age: Alaric and Attila on the move, Justinian building an empire, Mohammed reshaping faith and politics, Charlemagne forging a new order, William the Conqueror remaking England, and later figures like Marco Polo, Edward the Black Prince, Joan of Arc, and Gutenberg. Each life becomes a window into larger forces - invasion and nation-building, the pull of religion, the code of chivalry, and the spread of ideas - as the medieval centuries emerge not as a 'dark age,' but as a turning point filled with decisive personalities and hard-won change. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 00(00:04:05) Chapter 01(00:15:29) Chapter 02(00:28:37) Chapter 03(00:37:33) Chapter 04(00:47:31) Chapter 05(00:58:26) Chapter 06(01:05:48) Chapter 07(01:16:24) Chapter 08(01:26:27) Chapter 09(01:39:01) Chapter 10(01:49:30) Chapter 11(01:58:44) Chapter 12(02:05:05) Chapter 13(02:11:03) Chapter 14(02:21:23) Chapter 15(02:28:16) Chapter 16(02:34:07) Chapter 17(02:38:20) Chapter 18(02:46:26) Chapter 19(02:51:01) Chapter 20(02:57:57) Chapter 21(03:05:03) Chapter 22(03:10:57) Chapter 23(03:23:50) Chapter 24(03:31:04) Chapter 25(03:38:59) Chapter 26(03:46:46) Chapter 27(03:55:50) Chapter 28(04:02:45) Chapter 29(04:07:51) Chapter 30(04:15:43) Chapter 31(04:24:01) Chapter 32(04:30:51) Chapter 33 Learn more about your ad choices. The Sea Wolf by Jack London ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]

The Sea Wolf by Jack London audiobook. Genre: adventureWhen literary critic Humphrey Van Weyden survives a ferry collision in San Francisco Bay, he expects rescue - not conscription. Hauled aboard the sealing schooner Ghost, he finds himself under the absolute rule of Captain Wolf Larsen, a brilliant, domineering commander whose philosophy is as merciless as the sea he sails. Thrust into a world of brutal labor and rigid hierarchy, Humphrey must adapt quickly, learning seamanship and hardening his body as he struggles to preserve his identity and conscience. The Ghost ranges the Pacific on a perilous hunt, where storms, injuries, and the constant threat of violence test every man aboard. As Humphrey is drawn into a tense, uneasy relationship with Larsen - part adversary, part teacher - he is forced to confront unsettling questions about strength, morality, and what makes a life meaningful. The stakes rise when another survivor, the sensitive poet Maud Brewster, is brought onto the ship, complicating the balance of power and turning survival into something more than endurance. At once a maritime adventure and a clash of worldviews, The Sea-Wolf explores freedom, authority, and the price of becoming strong enough to live. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:19:42) Chapter 02(00:38:53) Chapter 03(01:05:16) Chapter 04(01:21:29) Chapter 05(01:40:20) Chapter 06(02:13:42) Chapter 07(02:22:07) Chapter 08(02:39:49) Chapter 09(03:01:19) Chapter 10(03:17:47) Chapter 11(03:32:50) Chapter 12(03:57:08) Chapter 13(04:07:14) Chapter 14(04:25:57) Chapter 15(04:39:45) Chapter 16(04:57:10) Chapter 17(05:30:04) Chapter 18(05:46:57) Chapter 19(06:02:13) Chapter 20(06:20:37) Chapter 21(06:31:43) Chapter 22(06:40:13) Chapter 23(06:52:35) Chapter 24(07:08:33) Chapter 25(07:39:09) Chapter 26(08:10:04) Chapter 27(08:28:16) Chapter 28(08:44:52) Chapter 29(08:58:02) Chapter 30(09:15:39) Chapter 31(09:22:13) Chapter 32(09:41:36) Chapter 33(09:55:56) Chapter 34(10:08:04) Chapter 35(10:23:07) Chapter 36(10:45:13) Chapter 37(11:05:57) Chapter 38(11:13:35) Chapter 39 Learn more about your ad choices. First Love by Ivan Turgenev ~ Full Audiobook [romance]

First Love by Ivan Turgenev audiobook. Genre: romanceThe title of the novella is almost an adequate summary in itself. The 'boy-meets-girl-then-loses-her' story is universal but not, I think, banal - despite a surprise ending which notoriously turns out to be very little of a surprise. First Love is given its originality and poignancy by Turgenev's mastery of the piercing turning-point (akin to Joyce's 'epiphanies') that transforms the character's whole being, making a tragic outcome inevitable. Even the nature symbolism is rescued from triteness by lovely poetic similes - e.g. 'but at that point my attention was arrested by the appearance of a speckled woodpecker who busily climbed up the slender stem of a birch-tree and peeped out uneasily from behind it, first to the right, then to the left, like a musician behind the bass-viol.'For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:38:16) Chapter 02(01:23:06) Chapter 03(01:52:59) Chapter 04(02:26:39) Chapter 05 Learn more about your ad choices.
