Pt 2 - Brain Health & Olfaction with Professor James Goodwin

#55: In Part 2 of a two-part series, Frauke sits down with renowned brain expert Professor James Goodwin to talk about brain health and olfaction. Dr. Goodwin explains the link between your sense of smell and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and surprises us with the revelation that "we're conceived old." He shares the good news that although the brain does deteriorate physically over time, we can overcome this, and even reverse aging. He then explains a series of measures we can take to improve brain health, including using our sense of smell and essential oils. Dr. Goodwin also talks about how we can improve working memory, but there's a catch, so pay close attention. This episode will leave you feeling optimistic that we have more control than we think. Pt 1 - The Brain & Olfaction with Professor James Goodwin

#54: In Part I of a two-part series, Frauke sits down with renowned brain expert Professor James Goodwin to give a historical perspective on our understanding of the brain and sense of smell (because smelling is in the brain). Dr. Goodwin shares how the scientific community evolved in their perception of the brain and olfactory system, what evolutionary role our sense of smell has played to make us who we are today, and why smelling is so different to our other senses (and other mammals). This episode is rich with important facts and stories of castrated pigs, the smell of blood, the Berlin Wall, and tamping rods blown through heads which will, no doubt, leave you very intrigued. At the end Dr. Goodwin shares the three biggest scientific findings in the last 20 years that have revolutionized how we look at brain health, which will definitely make you curious for Part II to come. Learn more about Professor James Goodwin:https://www.drjamesgoodwin.com/Learn about the Brain Health Network:https://brain.healthRead Professor James Goodwin's new book:Supercharge Your Brain - How To Maintain a Healthy Brain Throughout Your LifeFollow Frauke on Instagram:@an_aromatic_lifeSubscribe to Frauke's Substack:https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke'sScent*Tattoo Project

Smell Everything with Lula Curioca

#53: In this episode, Frauke sits down with Mexico City based olfactory artist, perfumer and designer Lula Curioca to discuss the importance of smelling everything. She explains what the sense of smell means to her, what potential she sees for this beautiful sense, and describes what smelling everything actually means. Lula takes us through her aromatic life journey, being born in Mexico and raised in Spain, and reveals how she used her sense of smell to restore her forgotten relationship with her native country when she eventually moved back to Mexico as a young adult. She vividly describes the smells of Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Tapachula (cardamom chewing gum!), making you long to take an olfactory tour. Lastly, Lula shares how she explores the link between textiles and olfaction, creating long-lasting olfactory objects conceived as an extension of the human identity. This episode will leave you wanting to connect with your sense of smell in exciting new ways... and, of course, smelling everything.Visit Lula's websiteLula Curioca Olfactory StudioRead Lula's Scent*Tattoo:Chocolate Milk Dipped BlanketConnect with Lula on Instagram@lulacuriocaFollow Frauke on Instagram:@an_aromatic_lifeSubscribe to Frauke's Substack:https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke'sScent*Tattoo Project

On Being a Designated Nose

#52: In this episode, Frauke sits down with designated noses Mark Wiegers, who lives with his partner Dia, who has congenital anosmia, Kiki Poupazis, who lives with her daughter Thelma, who has acquired anosmia, and Mark Winnington, who lives with his fiance Anne Louise, who has parosmia to talk about what it's like, as a person able to smell, to live with a person experiencing a smell dysfunction. They share what it was like at the beginning, how they manage day-to-day in supporting their partner/child, what roles and responsibilities they have, and, most importantly, what advice they can offer to others who might also be a designated nose. So, whether you, yourself, are experiencing a smell dysfunction, or you’re a designated nose, or maybe you’re friends with someone who has anosmia or parosmia. Or perhaps you don’t know anyone, but you just want to learn and gain some understanding. Whatever the reason, I want to thank you for listening because this is an important conversation that I know can help a lot of people. Follow Frauke on Instagram: @an_aromatic_life Subscribe to Frauke's Substack: https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke's Scent*Tattoo Project

Democratizing Scent with Saskia Wilson-Brown

#51: In this episode, Frauke sits down with The Institute for Art and Olfaction director and founder Saskia Wilson-Brown to discuss the democratization of scent. Saskia takes us through her early years living with a Cuban father and British mother, reveals how traveling a lot shaped who she is, and shares how her relationship to smell really changed in her teenage years going to school in Paris (hint, it involves supermodels). She also explains what brought her to finally settle down in Los Angeles and eventually start the IAO. Saskia discusses what she believes people get wrong about the sense of smell, what potential she sees in this beautiful sense, whether smelling, and scent for that matter, is a human right, as well as why perfume is more than just the liquid in a bottle. This conversation is all about shifting paradigms and questioning the status quo. So grab your favorite beverage and enjoy a thought-provoking hour that won't disappoint.Visit The Institute for Art & Olfaction website https://artandolfaction.com/Read the New York Times article: Can Scent Be Democratized?Connect with the IAO on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterFollow Frauke on Instagram: @an_aromatic_life Subscribe to Frauke's Substack: https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke's Scent*Tattoo Project

Making Sense of Smells with Charlie Atkins

#50: In this episode, Frauke sits down with congenital anosmic Charlie Atkins to answer her curiosities about smells. Charlie was born without a sense of smell and had a bunch of questions about smells she wanted to ask Frauke. These are everyday curiosities about odors that we, as smellers, frankly don't think about much. Questions like "What does it feel like to smell?", "How long do food smells last?", "How do you buy products to avoid clashing smells?", "How does smell travel and stick to things?" and a whole lot more! This was really hard! But Frauke is always up for a challenge. It certainly makes you think a lot more about this beautiful sense that so many of us take for granted. And the great thing about this conversation is that it allows everyone across the smell spectrum to gain new perspectives. So, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Connect with Charlie on social media:InstagramTikTokFollow Frauke on Instagram: @an_aromatic_life Subscribe to Frauke's Substack: https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke's Scent*Tattoo Project

Exploring Olfaction in Nigeria with Deola "Abela" Paul-Inyang

#49: In this episode, Frauke sits down with Nigerian perfumer, teacher, mentor, and artistic curator Deola “Abela” Paul-Inyang to talk about all things olfaction in Nigeria. Abela reveals how the smells of her childhood, and the influence of her mother, informed the work she does today. She also explains how she went against traditional norms to follow her heart (and nose) for more creative pursuits, and shares how her determination to know the how and why of olfactory materials led her to establish the Abela Fragrance Academy & Abela Centre for Olfactory Art. Abela shares what the Nigerian Perfume industry is like today, explains how she became a better perfumer once she had access to olfactory materials, and explains why all of her olfactory platforms come from a place of need. Frauke and Abela also discuss the impact Euro-centric fragrance products have on Nigerians truly understanding "what Africa smells like." Abela also shares her passion for helping people with smell loss, and reveals that she's dedicated to continuing to expand her olfactory platforms to include anosmia as well. This is a heartwarming conversation that will leave you truly inspired!Visit Abela's website Abela by Scents of AfricaConnect with Abela on social media:InstagramFacebookVisit the Abela Fragrance Academy on FacebookFollow Frauke on Instagram: @an_aromatic_life Subscribe to Frauke's Substack: https://anaromaticlife.substack.comVisit Frauke's website www.anaromaticlife.comLearn about Frauke's Scent*Tattoo Project
