Answering Your Strength and Conditioning Questions (Community Q&A Part 1)

Today on the podcast, we are launching a very exciting and very special series that I've wanted to do for a long time. A Q&A series answering people's questions directly from the community. We had a ton of questions and we put them all together and categorized them into four categories:   Strength and conditioning  Injuries Flexibility Culture   Each one of these podcasts is 30 minutes and I’ll be answering five of the most common and biggest topic questions that all people in the gymnastics community have asked. So the first one today is all about strength conditioning, warm-ups, programming, doing some in-season versus offseason management, talking a lot about what exercises I like how to get gymnasts strong and powerful.     I ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:   Kim asks: I’m a huge fan of your strength and ideas and philosophy. But it seems to be more focused on optional gymnast who are in the gym 20 plus hours per week, how can I use it with my lower level gymnast who only trains six hours per week?    Sarah asks: How do I keep gymnasts motivated to do strength, conditioning, and basics? And how do I deal with complaints that it's too boring or it's too hard and not putting in any effort?   Arlene asks: What is your opinion on general gymnastic strength testing versus functional testing?   Em asks: How do you get stronger and more consistent tumbling in athletes?   ALSO…   Mark asks: How does your approach to season change in cardio change out of season versus pre-season versus in season? We appreciate you listening! A Guide To Returning to Impact Sports After Injury

"How do you get back to high-impact sports, after an injury?" We get this question all the time, and recently one of our community members wanted to know if we could make a video on, return to impact progressions.    It can be really stressful not knowing how long it will take, what exercises to do if soreness is normal, and how things change based on growth plates vs tendons vs muscular injuries.    In this mini-podcast, Dave breaks down exactly how he makes these programs from scratch and answers all of these questions. We appreciate you listening! Must Hear Advice for Sports Medicine Providers on Delivering Better Clinical Care

Today on the podcast, I'm extremely excited to bring you part two of my conversation with Medicine Redefined hosts Dr. Altamash and Dr. Darsh in which we have a fantastic discussion on the medical side of things.   Anyone who is a physical therapist, athletic trainer, medical doctor, you really need to hear this conversation because we have a great talk around how to have a better quality of care for athletes, and making sure that healthcare providers are happy with their jobs in the process.    We talked quite a bit about the communication between physicians and medical or rehab providers on the other side of surgery or rehab diagnostics, we also dive quite a bit into lower back pain and how to unpack that because sometimes it's a pretty frustrating and challenging thing to deal with.    Discussing return to sports and how we can foster a better pathway back into some of the more high-level stuff that a lot of people struggle with.    And we delve into how can we create a better overall medical system with better quality of care for patients and athletes to make sure that we're not just getting stuck in a rut of just going through the motions and feeling burnt out or frustrated.   That we're actually delivering really high quality of care.    A really great discussion here which I enjoyed talking with them about this, so do me a huge favor and head on over to their podcast after you listen to this because they have phenomenal discussions with great physicians and medical providers about some really hot topics that are going on.We appreciate you listening! The Current State of Gymnastics Culture and Changes Ahead

This week on the podcast I am very excited to share with you an amazing conversation I had with Dr. Altamash and Dr. Darsh, who host their own podcast Medicine Redefined, which they invited me on. This is part one of two podcasts. In this first part, we really dig into the gymnastic stuff they were curious about, such as gymnastics culture, Simone Biles Olympics, and what it means in terms of mental health and how that impacts other athletes.    We DISCUSS; why is puberty still not normalized in the sport of gymnastics?   My thoughts on Simone Biles Olympics and the impact it has had on our sport.   At what age should you start talking about mental health with athletes and what type of exercises to use to develop mental toughness.   Why the age of entry into the sport is not the biggest determinant of who does well, long term.   ALSO…   How is the culture of gymnastics, now improving. We appreciate you listening! The Blueprint to a Fast, Easy Warm Up

Warm-ups can be one of the most overwhelming and frustrating things for coaches and athletes. It often feels like there is so much to do, and often times things get out of hand and it ends up being an hour warm-up and a half-hour rushed workout. In this video, I share the exact way that I build warm-ups for athletes. On the sport and the rehab side of things. We appreciate you listening! Breaking Down Shoulder Assessments

Today on the podcast, is part two of the very popular hip assessment video that we had last week. This week is part two where I really broke down everything about the shoulder. It's really important that anyone working with athletes understands why they can't get their arms over their head or why they have limited shoulder function, we need to have table assessments and ways to diagnose and break those things down. If you're interested in listening to it, go ahead and just check it out for free but if you want to check out the entire you know video section, see the breakdown, see the entire handout we worked through head to my online membership group called the Hero Lab:   www.shiftmovementscience.com/theherolab     We DISCUSS; screen why someone has limited shoulder flexibility, and how to fix it.   Know exactly how to assess the upper body for sports and lifting.   Learn the best ways to give strength exercises for the upper body.   Understand how to assess thoracic mobility better.    ALSO…   Hear common mistakes people make when assessing the shoulderWe appreciate you listening! Breaking Down Hip Assessments

Today we have something special for the podcast, I work at Champion Physical Therapy and Performance in Boston where we do a lot of continuing education, doctoral students' last rotations, and strength in-turns. This podcast is actually the audio from a recorded lecture I did for the entire staff on: an in-service related to assessing hips. Looking at the way people move for a hip function, hip mobility, what different tests can be done, who needs a different type of squat or exercise program, or what kind of mobility limitations somebody might have, and how you'd go about fixing those. A lot of people are interested in this kind of stuff so I wanted to share this audio version, but if you're really interested in seeing the test being broken down the full video version is on our online platform the Hero Lab and Shift HQ, which is essentially my monthly membership group where we have a massive amount of gymnastics medical providers, overall strength coaches and people in the community who are learning from me, doing lectures and also interacting with other likeminded people online.    If you want to see the video version of this click the link below: www.shiftmovementscience.com/theherolab   We DISCUSS; The "layers" of the hip from boney, to ligaments, to the kinetic chain.   Breaking down hip flexor, quad, and adductor soft tissue flexibility.   Understanding when mobility won't change based on bone structure.   How to assess hamstring tightness vs nerve tension.   ALSO…   How to change programs and exercises based on the table assessment. We appreciate you listening!
