How To Build Gymnastics Performance Teams
This week's podcast is actually a lecture that went out in my online membership group The Hero Lab. Lots of members wanted to learn more about how to start working with other professionals. Such as medical providers wanting to start working with a gym or strength coaches wanting to get in with some gymnastics clubs in the area. Coaches want to know the factors or qualities they should look for in a medical provider, strength coach, sports psychologist, or nutritionist's because the reality is that it's challenging to find great professional experts in different domains that are highly qualified and interested in and understand gymnastics. I share my experience of what I did to establish successful working relationships but also what highly successful Colleges, National Staff, and Clubs do so that hopefully other people can replicate that model and gain the same performance benefits. We appreciate you listening! Essential Trampoline Drills and Progressions with Elite Coach Steve Gluckstein
Today on the podcast I’m joined again by former trampolinist and US Junior National Team Coordinator Steve Gluckstein. In his previous episode discussed the benefits of weightlifting and strength training for gymnasts and his experiences as an Olympic level trampoline coach. I wanted him back on to talk more specifically about the Trampoline and TNT disciplines, as lots of people requested advice and ideas around skills and progressions in this domain. WE DISCUSS; The base level skills and drills your athletes need to master before you even think about harder skills. The strength and conditioning work you should be spending more time on. Why the flexibility demands are more intense in trampolining. The systematic progressions for a back tuck. How to spot on the trampoline. And… The great hotdog debate. We appreciate you listening! How To Boost Gymnastics Performance Using Gymnastics Strength Coaches with Dan Lonsdale
In today’s episode, I’m super pumped to have my buddy and expert strength and conditioning coach Dan Lonsdale back on to dive into exactly how coaches can go about working with great strength conditioning coaches, as this is something that has officially become part of the gymnastic culture. But it can be really hard to find a great strength conditioning coach who understands the sport of gymnastics. Dan works with a breadth of clubs around the UK to help get the most out of athletes' performance. He has an amazing technical knowledge of what exercises are great for gymnasts to do and how many reps and sets, when to do them, and the best approach to the in-season versus the offseason. So I wanted to have Dan back on because a lot of people are now approaching this hybrid model of training and want to get involved with a strength coach this year but don't really know where to start. WE DISCUSS; The development of strength and conditioning in gymnastics in the past 10 years. It’s not all about lifting weights. Saving gymnastics coaches time and getting more time on the events. Dan’s approaches throughout the seasons. Why rest is key. And… What would a workout look like?We appreciate you listening! Changing Landings in NCAA Gymnastics for Less Knee Injuries
Changing how gymnasts are taught to land, in an effort to reduce the risk of serious knee injuries like ACL/meniscus tears, is something that has been talked about for the last 10+ years. I was very grateful and humbled to be asked by the Women's Gymnastics NCAA Judging Association to give a presentation on what the science says is the safest way for gymnasts to land. This week's podcast is the lecture I gave to all the NCAA judges and NCAA coaches over two weeks. It was in an effort to help share education get everyone on the same page. But also, to hopefully change any rules around deductions that might be conflicting with what the science says is the safest way to absorb high landing forces and reduce injury risk. You can find the entire lecture and presentation that I gave in the blog post. We appreciate you listening! The Biggest Gymnastics Flexibility Mistakes I Made As A Younger Coach, and What I Do Now
Today’s podcast is a heavily requested topic I get asked about frequently. What is the best approach to flexibility? I summarize five of the biggest mistakes that I used to make as a coach and what I do differently now based on all the things that I've read, learned, and people I've worked with. I break down exactly what the research says about how many days you should stretch, the most effective exercises to do, make things stick long term, make flexibility training more effective saving time and effort, but also keep it as safe as possible. I DISCUSS; Why consistency not intensity is key. Which type of stretching is the best. What is the most effective dosage for stretching? The importance of eccentric strength training for flexibility. And… Does stretching change muscle length over time or does it change our tolerance to stretch? If you are interested in flexibility training, we have put this podcast out in conjunction with a huge course launch that we've been working on, The Gymnastic Flexibility Blueprint …is your one-stop shop for everything I've ever thought about with flexibility in terms of what does the research says made into in an easy to follow summary to help build your own programs: https://shiftmovementscience.com/gfbcourse/We appreciate you listening! Confronting Harmful Coaching Practices in Gymnastics Head On With Thomas Elder
Today on the podcast I’m very excited to share another thought-provoking and important conversation about cultural change, morals, and ethics of coaching with Tom Elder. With 13 years of experience coaching, he also has an extensive education in Philosophy with his research focused on child autonomy in abuse in youth sports, which is obviously a very important topic that we're dealing with right now in gymnastics. Once again he had my brain turning talking about gymnastics culture, the things that we have grown to accept in our sport, philosophies, coaching techniques. We explored the negative impact these can have on athletes if we allow some of these things to continue. This might be a tough episode to listen to if you're someone who's going through this yourself, or has a history with someone who maybe has, unfortunately, experienced harmful behaviors. “I hope that if I could achieve one thing from this podcast, I can get one person who's struggling with this, to feel like and realize they're not alone. And they have the whole backing of the community. We're all supporting them. But there's going to be some tough roads for people to go down if the sports really going to get better. And we need brave and courageous people who are willing to lead the way and are willing to take that for themselves so that the community itself gets a little bit stronger.” Tom Elder You can contact Thomas via tweusag@gmail.comWe appreciate you listening!
