Last year, the Golden Globe Awards were untelevised. This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose comedian Jerrod Carmichael to emcee the proceedings. Carmichael started the ceremony by saying, “I’m here because I’m black.” Following a brief moment of silence to discomfort the audience, he continued, “This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won’t say were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So do with that information what you will.” In telling all this, Carmichael got one thing right: The HFPA did secure his role to have a black face present, but that was not the primary reason. In today’s show, Jason will discuss the real reason and why no one in the mainstream media is talking about it. The key reason is because Jerrod Carmichael is part of the Alphabet Mafia. “Fearless” brings an ugly reality to light with today’s discussion. The public beef between Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe reflects the consequence of sports television's embrace of “tha culture.” That’s short for hip-hop culture: the art, style of dress, and mindset associated with popular commercial rap music. “Tha culture” foments violence, chaos, petty beefs, the prioritization of emotion over logic, and the justification of an immoral pursuit of money, power, and fame. Six years ago, Fox Sports 1 executive Jamie Horowitz, Skip Bayless, and Shannon Sharpe dove headfirst into “tha culture” with their debate show “Undisputed.” Horowitz paid rapper Lil Wayne to befriend Bayless and create a theme song for the show. Horowitz envisioned “Undisputed” as the synagogue for the marriage of sports and hip-hop. Since then, DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win” is now what Queen’s “We Will Rock You” was in the 1980s and '90s. The change in genre provoked a cultural shift that has impacted everything around sports, including the broadcasters. “Fearless” welcomes you back in this new year! 2023 started off with a shocking tragedy during Monday Night Football. During last night’s game — featuring the Buffalo Bills vs. the Cincinnati Bengals — with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter, Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed after standing up following a tackle by Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following the hit; his heartbeat was restored on the field. This devastation was strong enough to convert the users of the most secular social media platform, Twitter, into Christians. Many users and sports commentators were quoted saying, “Praying for Damar,” and compared football players to heroes who sacrifice their lives. Unfortunately, Hamlin wasn’t the only one who was in critical condition. There were many overreactions from corporate media and sports figures — such as Domonique Foxworth, Skip Bayless, and many others — who took sensitivity too far.
