"Reading Evangelicals: How Christian Fiction Shaped A Culture and Faith" w/Daniel Silliman, Christianity Today

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comWho are evangelicals? And what is evangelicalism? Those attempting to answer these questions usually speak in terms of political and theological stances. But those stances emerge from an evangelical world with its own institutions—institutions that shape imagination as much as they shape ideology. In this unique exploration of evangelical subculture, Daniel Silliman speak with Will and Josh about  how Christian fiction, and the empire of Christian publishing and bookselling it helped build, is key to understanding the formation of evangelical identity. With a close look at five best-selling novels—Love Comes Softly, This Present Darkness, Left Behind, The Shunning, and The Shack—Silliman considers what it was in these books that held such appeal and what effect their widespread popularity had on the evangelical imagination. Reading Evangelicals ultimately makes the case that the worlds created in these novels reflected and shaped the world evangelicals saw themselves living in—one in which romantic love intertwines with divine love, humans play an active role in the cosmic contest between angels and demons, and the material world is infused with the literal workings of God and Satan. Silliman tells the story of how the Christian publishing industry marketed these ideas as much as they marketed books, and how, during the era of the Christian bookstore, this—every bit as much as politics or theology—became a locus of evangelical identity.Guest BioDaniel Silliman is the news editor for Christianity Today. He earned a doctorate in American studies from Heidelberg University in Germany and has taught US history and humanities at Heidelberg, Valparaiso University, and Milligan University.Support the show🎧 Want to learn more about Faithful Politics, get in touch with the hosts, or suggest a future guest?👉 Visit our website: faithfulpoliticspodcast.com📚 Check out our Bookstore – Featuring titles from our amazing guests:faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/bookstore❤️ Support the show – Help us keep the conversation going:https://www.patreon.com/cw/FaithfulPolitics📩 Reach out to us:Faithful Host, Josh Burtram: Josh@faithfulpolitics.comPolitical Host, Will Wright: Will@faithfulpolitics.com📱 Follow & connect with us:Twitter/X: @FaithfulPolitikInstagram: faithful_politicsFacebook: FaithfulPoliticsPodcastLinkedIn: faithfulpolitics📰 Subscribe to our Substack for behind-the-scenes content:faithfulpolitics.substack.com

"Let's Talk About Sex...ahem...I mean Gender" w/Dr. An Pham

Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn the last and final installment of our Pride Month special called, "Be Curious, Not Judgemental", we speak with a doctor who provides gender affirming care for children. During the Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) asked  “Can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman’?” as she questioned Jackson about a transgender athlete. Depending on where you sit politically will likely determine your level of response to her answer, “Can I provide a definition? No. I can’t,” responded Jackson. In this episode, we discuss several issues regarding gender that have made their way into mainstream media. To start us off Dr. Pham discusses the important role of providing gender affirming care to children, and dispels some often cited myths about what that care actually includes. We then have a much broader conversation about gender, and how we should view it. Lastly they discuss how transgender issues aren't just a new phenomenon but rather something that has always existed, but is just now getting the attention it deserves. Support the show🎧 Want to learn more about Faithful Politics, get in touch with the hosts, or suggest a future guest?👉 Visit our website: faithfulpoliticspodcast.com📚 Check out our Bookstore – Featuring titles from our amazing guests:faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/bookstore❤️ Support the show – Help us keep the conversation going:https://www.patreon.com/cw/FaithfulPolitics📩 Reach out to us:Faithful Host, Josh Burtram: Josh@faithfulpolitics.comPolitical Host, Will Wright: Will@faithfulpolitics.com📱 Follow & connect with us:Twitter/X: @FaithfulPolitikInstagram: faithful_politicsFacebook: FaithfulPoliticsPodcastLinkedIn: faithfulpolitics📰 Subscribe to our Substack for behind-the-scenes content:faithfulpolitics.substack.com

"Colorful Conservatism" w/Casey Flores, President Log Cabin Republicans, Richmond

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comDespite what you’ve heard, did you know that the Republican Party has a caucus of folks with a proud history of fighting to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party? LGBT Republicans and straight allies have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance with a group called the Log Cabin Republicans.  This is the third installment in our four-part pride month series called, “Be Curious, Not Judgmental”. In this episode Will and Josh speak with Casey Flores, the Log Cabin Republican President of the Richmond, Virginia chapter. They discuss what it’s like being a member of the Republican Party, especially when there are numerous instances that would make this membership counterintuitive. The way that Casey explains it, is that their membership actually helps the broader LGBT community. The guys then pivot to discussions about the "Parental Rights in Education", colloquially known as the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill, and how the Log Cabin Republicans actually helped craft some of the language.  The Log Cabin Republicans have been around for a long time, and Casey helps explain its origins. You might be surprised to learn about which President is linked to its founding!  This was a fun episode to record and definitely highlights the diversity in the Republican Party!  For more information about the Log Cabin Republicans visit: https://logcabin.org LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS HISTORYLog Cabin Republicans have a proud history of fighting to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party. LGBT Republicans and straight allies have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance. The name of the organization is a reference to the first Republican President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a Log Cabin. President Lincoln built the Republican Party on the principles of liberty and equality under the law. The party should return to its roots. When the organization was founded, the name, “Lincoln Club,” was already taken by another GOP group, so organizers instead chose the name Log Cabin Republicans.
