His clients include professional baseball teams, grocery store chains, single establishment and chain restaurants, and leading companies in the construction and facility maintenance fields. Jake has been interviewed by major media outlets such as Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC regarding national immigration concerns. Jake founded Monty & Ramirez LLP to offer an integrated approach to dealing with Hispanic workforces. He and his bilingual partners address all the critical aspects of employer advocacy, from immigration to union matters, workplace safety, and employment disputes. A recent McKinsey report found that 100 million workers across the globe will need to find new jobs by 2030. That comes to about 17 million Americans that will be transitioning to a new career. However, an Amazon-commissioned Accenture report found that 33 million low-income Americans could be upskilled for emerging jobs with the right training. For this reason, Amazon recently announced that they are committed to training 29 million people across the world for free for in-demand skills. According to the World Prison Brief at PrisonStudies.org, the United States has the largest prison population in the world and the highest per capita incarceration rate. While we could discuss the ethics of such a system, today I’d rather discuss one of the consequences of this system: unhirable candidates among the formerly incarcerated. A job seeker’s incarceration becomes a matter of public record, except in certain specific cases, and comes up on even the most cursory background checks. While many have tried to make things fairer for these candidates, the truth is that the formerly incarcerated have serious difficulty landing jobs. In this episode we are going to explore why the perspective of not hiring the formerly incarcerated is misguided and results in the loss of potentially wonderful talent with two experts. Our first guest is Harley Blakeman, he is the Founder & CEO of Honest Jobs (https://www.honestjobs.co/), an organization dedicated to getting jobs for people that have been affected by the criminal justice system.
