The Stories That Hold Us Back with Jon Acuff
Your thoughts aren't something you have, they're something you hone. It's a double-edged sword; optimistic, enthusiastic thinking compounds over time to create amazing things, while a multitude of mental woes can dampen our willingness to go bigger. Jon Acuff, author of Soundtracks: the surprising solution to overthinking and one of my favorite speakers, is on the podcast to give us a lesson on how to address negative, repetitive thoughts to steer us towards our goals and dreams rather than away from them. It's incredible what becomes possible when your mental energy is applied in the right direction. If not aware of Jon's work, he is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including his most recent Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done. He's an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences. I had the pleasure of seeing him on stage and he knocked me back with his unique blend of humor, honesty, and hope. In this episode we get into: Being organized and detailed vs. overthinking How to be kind to yourself Trauma-related soundtracks Why writer's block doesn't exist Three critical skills needed for this decade If you want to stay in touch with Jon, shoot him a text: (615)398-6173 As always, I'm available at 206-309-5177. Stop Trading Time for Money
Passion and curiosity drive the artist towards a craft that usually isn't the most lucrative. Early on, we jump on any opportunity to make money. But quickly, reality sets in. Bills, taxes, medical costs, equipment- it adds up fast, and we realize that we going to have to charge more. So how do we scale a creative business? In this episode I take a question from Fritz, a photographer working hourly, about how to do just that. To get you thinking before the show: What part of the business do you love? How can you build your business in a way that you do more of the things you love and bring on other people to support the areas that don't light you up as much? Finally, never underestimate the power of your brand. Today, you might not be able to charge the high rate you feel you deserve, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to a year or two from now. Taking smaller clients and hustling along the way does not make you are ineligible to land the Nike's and Apples of the world down the road. Focus on honing your craft and don't be shy to take on bigger clients. Enjoy! Have a question? Text me 1-206-309-5177 Tweet me @chasejarvis --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Poetry, Vulnerability and Finding Your Voice with Jericho Brown
Is it time to take the leap? Anyone you've admired, looked up to or emulated has, at some point, taken a necessary risk to move towards the living and life of their choice. Today, Pulitzer prize-winning poet Jericho Brown shares how he did just that, and the key to speaking truth through art. Jericho's advice for anyone beginning their journey struck me as profound, yet simple. What would a day look like if you were living your dream career/life/business? What you begin to realize is that there are things that you can do today, cost-free, to move towards that reality. "If you want to be a writer, then write for 5 minutes. Once you find 5 minutes, you can find 10, and 30, and once you are writing for 30 minutes a day you on your way," Jericho says. Jericho worked as a speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before earning his PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. The New York Times Book Review notes his most recent collection The Tradition: "In Brown's poems, the body at risk — the infected body, the abused body, the black body, the body in eros — is most vulnerable to the cruelty of the world. But even in their most searing moments, these poems are resilient out of necessity, faithful to their account of survival, when survival is the hardest task of all: "So the Bible says, in the beginning, / Blackness. I am alive." In this episode we talk about: Why it's necessary to take risk with your words Translating experiences into poetry What happens when you have nothing to lose What makes poetry so powerful and why its resurgence is no coincidence Enjoy! A portfolio is worth 1000 cold emails with Alec Cutter
CreativeLive student and filmmaker, Alec Cutter first came on my radar in 2016 during a live panel event in Seattle. After playing division one soccer at Gonzaga University, he moved to NYC with a dream to become a filmmaker, where he faced the classic chicken and egg dilemma. He needed a portfolio to get hired, but felt like getting hired was necessary to create a portfolio. Living on a friends couch, working multiple jobs, Alec used his spare time and income to create videos for cafes around Brooklyn. We get into the specifics around how those videos led to his full-time job in the industry and the path to his most recent project Nando, which was accepted into the Tribeca Film Festival. It isn't often that we host a CreativeLive student on the podcast, but Alec's willingness to take risks, put in the work and pursue stories and areas he's passionate about exemplifies the power of many philosophies and strategies we talk about here on the show. If you've ever doubted whether it's possible to succeed in going after your dreams, this episode is for you. If you're interested in watching Nando be sure to follow Alec on Instagram, @aleccutter. What Does it Take to be Backable with Suneel Gupta
In 2008, Suneel Gupta watched a young Barack Obama deliver a speech at the democratic national convention. From his perspective backstage, he saw the faces of the crowd as they became visibly moved. This made him ask, what is it that makes people backable? What is the intangible 'IT' factor that makes people take a chance on you? Suneel shares stories and lessons from his journey co-founding Rise, a company focused on health care and health coaching, and writing his recent book "Backable: The Surprising Truth Behind what Makes People Take a Chance on You." Suneel is also on the faculty at Harvard, where he teaches students how to become backable. This episode explores the ingredients to discovering the "right path," the stories we tell ourselves and the baggage we carry, and the undeniable importance of community throughout. Other topics from this episode include: Focusing on the next right move Not feeling pressure to connect your past to your future How to develop conviction for your projects Resiliency and the value of failure Storytelling and pitching Not sharing your idea too early Finding meaning in difficult situations Low stakes practice for high stakes performance Essential backable qualities For more information about Suneel, head on over to backable.com and order a copy of his book! How to Transition Your Portfolio to Work You Really Want
How do I know when to transition my portfolio? It's a classic question because it's a paradox. If you want to get hired, press pause on the stuff that's not absolutely crucial. And go make the stuff you want to get hired to create. A convoluted and broad portfolio does not allow you to make a name for yourself. So build a portfolio with your spare time, money and energy to get the work you really want. A few other keys: > Market yourself as the thing you want to be, not the thing that's paying the bills right now > Your portfolio is constantly evolving. It's okay to put it out there without it being perfect. Perfectionism is a major block > How can you put more of YOU in your photos, work, business etc. What is your unique upbringing, perspective, or interests? Bring all that good stuff into the next phase of your portfolio The bottom line: your portfolio has to look like the work you want to do. Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive.
