Navigating turbulence: Air NZ CEO Greg Foran
We chew on the headwinds the national carrier is battling and what it's doing to fly a smoother path with CEO Greg Foran. Our conversation follows a 65% drop in net profit and earnings down by more than half for the 2024 financial year, plus no guidance due to uncertainty ahead. But Greg Foran is candid about how resourceful a little airline at the bottom of the world needs to be to ride out fleet and maintenance issues, and an economic downturn. We ask him about his tenure since early 2020 and what he’d do differently? And when will the airline be flying into London after an absence of 5 years? Contact’s Manawa takeover–who wins?
We put some investor questions to Contact Energy Mike Fuge as the gentailer makes its case for a $2.3 billion takeover of renewable wholesale power company Manawa Energy. Mike provides a picture of what a combined portfolio of energy assets would look after adding Manawa’s 25 hydro power stations, plus how this acts as a natural hedge. But is Contact paying too much given recent challenges at Manawa (including a recent earnings downgrade) and what does it mean if Manawa majority shareholder Infratil sells and takes a 10.5 % stake in Contact? When does the transaction pay its way? And what does the Commerce Commission need to weigh up to approve the deal that would make Contact the number 2 gentailer behind Meridian? Tune in to find out! Dairy drama: Synlait’s crucial survival vote
We chat with George Adams, the chairman of distressed milk company Synlait ahead of shareholders voting on a capital rescue package. Adams is intent on saving this second tier player in the export dairy industry, and tells us why there are opportunities it can pursue that are different to those chased by Fonterra. He’s pragmatic about the challenge of raising three and a half times Synlait's market capitalization, and the fact minority shareholders will have their holdings diluted by more than half, in favour of larger shareholders including a2 Milk. And who knew adult milk products (not infant) and cream (the shelf-stable variety) are the way of the future? Mainfreight: where next for the blue trucks?
Having Aussies run the Australian arm of freight and logistics giant Mainfreight has helped it become the biggest earner—surpassing the Kiwi business this financial year. In a candid chat with Mainfreight Managing Director Don Braid we also find out how it’s cracked getting established in India. Back home a key concern is no decision about the upgrade of the Picton Ferries, and a lack of consultation with those at the coalface of rail networks. Learn how Mainfreight’s approach to mandatory climate reporting is being adopted by other overseas companies, but it hasn’t been able to get long-haul electric vehicles (yes Tesla)! Plus who makes up those famous inspirational quotes you see on the blue trucks, at airports and the like? As Rocket Lab makes history shipping twin spacecraft for NASA’s Mars mission, we catch up with company founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck. Our conversation at Rocket Lab’s Auckland site, follows a June-quarter revenue jump of 70%, and is in anticipation of its Neutron rocket launch in 2025, which the company says will end the SpaceX monopoly for medium launch vehicles. Find out why Rocket Lab is actually an infrastructure company, how it builds for interplanetary research (think the Red Planet) faster and cheaper, and the state of the space industry.
