During the Tanker War, Duffy was a naval officer aboard the U.S.S. Cochrane (DDG-21). He later served as a diplomat with the State Department for 32 years.

Postal Service stamp issued for the  U.S. Naval Academy's 150th Anniversary that depicted Swift, one of the Academy's offshore sailing boats with Will and other midshipmen in Swift's crew.
