Glenn Aparicio Parry, PhD, is author of Original Thinking: A Radical Revisioning of Time, Humanity, and Nature. He is the founder and director of the Circle for Original Thinking, a think tank based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, he describes his participation, for over a decade, in a series of dialogues between native American elders, academic linguists, and theoretical physicists. These meetings caused him to question very basic notions such as the nature of time. Native Americans tend to see time as circular rather than linear. He also notes that, in modern western culture, humans believe themselves to be separate from nature, whereas native Americans see themselves as part of nature. He points out that native American languages emphasize process. They have many verbs and few nouns. This was in accord with the thinking of the physicists. He discusses the role of dreams in shaping our view of reality. He challenges the notion that we can “conquer” nature. Stuart Hameroff, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology and psychology at the Banner University Medical Center of the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is also co-founder and director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. He is author of Ultimate Computing: Biomolecular Consciousness and Nanotechnology. Since 1994, he has organized the “Toward a Science of Consciousness” conferences at the University of Arizona and elsewhere. Working with Sir Roger Penrose, he is the co-author of the “Orch OR” theory of consciousness. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, he focuses on the idea that consciousness is an orchestrated whole. This, he maintains, is accomplished through quantum coherence unifying the various activities of the brain. The orchestra of consciousness occurs at various, specific frequency resonances. He also describes how our experience of time is related to the rate at which we process information and experience conscious moments. Time seems to slow down when the brain is processing information at a faster rate. In addition he suggests, in accordance with Roger Penrose’s interpretation of quantum theory, that information in the brain can travel backwards through time. Jeffrey Mishlove examines the theory of cognitive dissonance as enunciated by Leon Festinger and colleagues in their 1956 classic sociological text, When Prophecy Fails. The book involves the story of a UFO cult in Chicago that anticipated the end of the world. When the prophecy failed to materialize, many cult members strengthened their belief in the cult leader and began proselytizing. Stephen Braude, PhD, served as chairman of the philosophy department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has also served as president of the Parapsychological Association. He is author of Crimes of Reason, The Gold Leaf Lady, Immortal Remains, The Limits of Influence, First Person Plural, and ESP and Psychokinesis. He is the recent recipient of the prestigious Myers Memorial Medal awarded by the Society for Psychical Research for outstanding contributions. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, he notes that apparitions were studied extensively by the British Society for Psychical Research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Basically, there are two categories of apparitions: those of the living and those of the deceased. Thousands of such cases have been reported and researched. The most common of these is known as the “crisis apparition” and often occurs in relationship to a death or accident. Often apparitions are thought of as a mental phenomenon, probably produced by telepathy. Sometimes they are pure psychological projections or are produced by hypnosis. However, Braude maintains that collective apparitions cannot readily be explained this way. He argues that apparitions that are seen by many people simultaneously may be physical phenomena produced by psychokinesis. Stafford Betty, PhD, is a philosopher and professor of religious studies at California State University, Bakersfield. He is author of Vadiraja’s Refutation of Shankara’s Non-Dualism, The Imprisoned Splendor, The Afterlife Unveiled, and Heaven and Hell Unveiled. Richard Reichbart, JD, PhD, is a training and supervising psychoanalyst. For thirty five years, he has maintained a private practice for the treatment of adults, adolescents and children in Northern New Jersey.
