Like It Or Not, Vaccine Passports Are Coming
Within a few weeks, Australia will begin trialling our first vaccine passports, following in the footsteps of many other countries where this digital document is already commonly used to gain access to domestic services like hairdressers and restaurants, and international travel. For many people this is the logical next step as we try to find a way to move forward with our lives and 'learn to live with Covid', but for others this is yet another violation of our rights to freedom of choice and movement. The Quicky speaks to an expert in mandatory vaccination policy and a Federal Government Minister to break down how vaccine passports will work in Australia, and explore why people are divided on whether they should exist at all. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guests: Dr Katie Attwell - Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia, and an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award Fellow who specialises in mandatory vaccination policy Dan Tehan - Federal Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, member of the Liberal Party, and the Federal Member for Wannon in Victoria Subscribe to The Quicky at... https://mamamia.com.au/the-quicky/ CONTACT US Got a topic you'd like us to cover? Bad Blood: The Young Female Billionaire Who Conned America
This week, one of America's most hotly anticipated fraud trials began when the woman once known as the youngest, self-made female billionaire, Elizabeth Holmes entered a courtroom to face the jury who will decide if she spends the next 20 years in jail. At just 19 she founded bio-tech company Theranos in Silicon Valley, where she was frequently referred to as 'the next Steve Jobs' for her plan to revolutionise healthcare with a new blood testing technology she claimed to have invented. The only problem was, it didn't work. The Quicky speaks to an expert in human behaviour to find out how such a young woman was able to convince some of America's most highly respected businesspeople to invest hundreds of millions of dollars, and how it all came crashing down. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guest: Dr Jennifer Wilson - Behavioural scientist, holistic risk strategist, and psycho-cybersecurity expert This episode of The Quicky uses some grabs from the 2019 HBO documentary, The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley, and this TedMed Talk from 2014. What Is An ‘Underlying Health Condition’ Anyway?
When someone dies with Covid-19, one question that quickly comes up, is did they have an underlying health condition? It seems we find it easier to accept a person's death if we think they were already very ill or elderly, but is this just a way of excusing these deaths? And how do you know if your own medical conditions make you more vulnerable? The Quicky speaks to a medical expert to find out what counts as an 'underlying health condition', and how much of an impact that really has on your risk of falling seriously ill or even dying from Covid-19. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guest: Professor Nancy Baxter - Head of the School Of Population And Global Health at the University of Melbourne, a clinical epidemiologist, general surgeon and health services researcher. Yes, The Police Can Now Legally Hack Your Phone
With all eyes on the pandemic, you might not have noticed that last month our Federal Government passed new laws that mean if you are suspected of a crime, police and other agencies can now hack your smartphone without you even knowing about it. The Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identify and Disrupt) Bill 2021 is intended to help combat the growing problem of online criminal activity which sounds like a good thing, but not everyone is convinced the new powers will only be used to target criminals. The Quicky speaks to a digital rights activist to find out why many think this is a step too far when it comes to violating our privacy, and how it could even make it easier for perpetrators of domestic violence to stalk their victims, or anyone deemed to be an enemy of the state. How Can We End Sexual Harassment At Work?
It's a sad reality that no matter which industry you're in, if you are a woman who has ever had a job in Australia you've probably witnessed or experienced sexual harassment or assault in the workplace. Last week, hundreds of experts and survivors came together to discuss how we can better protect all women at the National Summit on Women's Safety, but with the Government refusing to implement key reforms, will it really make a difference? The Quicky hears several women's stories, and speaks to a workplace investigator and trainer who uses his experience as a lawyer and former member of the Police to change workplace culture and prevent inappropriate behaviour before it happens. 20 Years Since The Planes Hit, Yet We're Still Feeling 9/11
Twenty years ago, a group of 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial flights in the United States and crashed them into prominent sites including the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, sparking the War on Terror which has claimed at least 900,000 lives. Two decades on, life remains changed forever, for everyone. The Quicky speaks to an Australian woman who worked in a New York City hospital that day helping the injured, and a prominent anti-racism advocate about why none of our lives have been, or will ever be the same again. What's Really Happening In Wilcannia?
There has been a lot of news recently coming out of the regional NSW town of Wilcannia, where as many as 15% of the town's population, most of whom are Aboriginal, have contracted Covid-19. This has highlighted the inequalities faced by many Aussies living in remote areas, and has us wondering what is happening in terms of the pandemic when it comes to First Nations Australians more broadly? The Quicky speaks to two indigenous women who work for NSW Aboriginal Land Councils, and the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians to find out what exactly is happening in these communities, and what we and the government should be doing to help them. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guests: Jenny Thwaites - CEO of the Wilcannia Local Aboriginal Land Council Anne Dennis - Chairperson of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Councillor for the North West Region, and a proud Gamilaraay woman Linda Burney - Labor Member for Barton and Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services, and for Indigenous Australians, and a proud member of the Wiradjuri nation Subscribe to The Quicky at... https://mamamia.com.au/the-quicky/ CONTACT US Got a topic you'd like us to cover? ‘Statriotism’: Can Aussies Be Reunited After The Pandemic?
There have been many downsides to the pandemic, but one of the worst is that it seems to have divided Aussies into a collection of individual states and territories rather than one united nation. The fight over closed domestic borders, and politicians at all levels blaming each other over their handling of Covid-19 has caused what some fear may be an irreparable rift. The Quicky speaks to a Federal Senator, and an Australian Studies expert to find out how we got to this point, and if and when we might all be reunited as one country moving forward. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guests: Senator Amanda Stoker - Federal Assistant Minister to the Attorney-General, Assistant Minister for Women and Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations Mark Kenny - Australian Studies Professor at the Australian National University's College of Arts and Social Sciences, and host of the weekly politics and public affairs podcast, Democracy Sausage With Mark Kenny Subscribe to The Quicky at... https://mamamia.com.au/the-quicky/ CONTACT US Got a topic you'd like us to cover? Has The Pandemic Changed Your Relationship With Your Bra?
Women's underwear has changed dramatically over the centuries, and it seems our relationship with our bras is shifting once again as so many of us are spending a lot more time at home, but is this temporary, or will we ditch the old 'boulder holders' for good? The Quicky speaks to a variety of women of all shapes and sizes, a journalist who tried living bra-free for a week, and a gender studies expert to find out how we really feel about our bras and our breasts, and why having our nipples visible in public is still taboo. CREDITS Host/Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Guests: Kellie Scott - Digital Journalist for the ABC in Brisbane who recently tried going bra-free for a week to see what would happen Dr Briony Lipton - Postdoctoral research associate within the Women, Work and Leadership Research Group at the University of Sydney Subscribe to The Quicky at... https://mamamia.com.au/the-quicky/ CONTACT US Got a topic you'd like us to cover?
