Bruce Willis: What It Means To Live With Aphasia
Last week, Bruce Willis' family released a statement that the Hollywood favourite is retiring from acting as he has been diagnosed with the medical condition Aphasia. But what exactly is Aphasia, and what does it mean for the everyday lives of more than 140,000 Aussies who also live with this condition? The Quicky speaks to an expert in speech and language, and a woman who acquired Aphasia after having a stroke at the age of 33 to find out what it is, how it impacts your body, and the available treatment options helping those people to continue with their lives. If you'd like more information about Aphasia, or access to resources and support, the Australian Aphasia Association (AAA) is a not-for-profit support and advocacy association and registered charity for people with Aphasia, their families, and the professionals who help them. CREDITS Host: Claire Murphy With thanks to: Emma Beesley - A former lawyer who experienced a stroke at the age of 33, and is now passionate about being a voice for people living with Aphasia Kirrie Ballard - Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Sydney Producer: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Siobhán Moran-McFarlane Audio Producer: Jacob Round Subscribe to The Quicky at... https://mamamia.com.au/the-quicky/ CONTACT US Got a topic you'd like us to cover? MAFS: Stop Weaponising Nude Photos
On one of Australia's biggest reality television shows, the fallout from what has been labelled a 'nude photo scandal' continues, with two young women being publicly pitted against each other, after one shared a naked image of the other. But why do we continue to frame these issues in a way that implies that a woman should be ashamed of her naked body, instead of focusing on the person who chooses to share these images maliciously? The Quicky speaks to an expert in social media, and a mother whose daughter was blackmailed with nude photos, to find out how we can stop weaponising images of women and girls. CREDITS Host: Claire Murphy With thanks to: Dr Emily van der Nagel - Lecturer in Communications and Media Studies, focusing on social media practices at Monash University Linda* - Supported her daughter who had a very traumatic experience as a result of someone threatening to share her nude photos *Name and voice has been changed for privacy. As the inquest continues into the death of Hannah Clarke and her three children at the hands of her estranged husband, grim details about a string of abuses that occurred in the lead-up to their violent murders are coming to light.
