Recently we saw Chinese citizens on the streets of cities and towns across China itself, protesting against the communist government. Now protests are not uncommon, even in countries where this type of anti-government push back can end with someone behind bars, or worse… but what makes these protests so unique, is the fact that they were even able to coordinate a mass gathering at all. More women than ever were elected into the Australian Parliament this year, 58 MPs now making up 38% of the chamber, the highest ever on record. Only for one party, representation went backwards. But are there plans in place to change that, to bring more women and a more diverse selection of people into the Liberal fold so can they make a difference before we go to the polls again in a few years time? There’s a scene from the current series of The Crown that many people found jarring. When Mohamed Al-Fayed buys the former French residence of the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, he invites the royals to visit. Instead, they send an entourage who clear it out of some of the more important royal objects, including the desk at which the then King Edward signed his abdication papers. But while that story isn’t quite true, many wondered at the audacity of the royal family claiming artefacts from their own history when they hold on to so many of those they’ve collected from the colonies over hundreds of years, objects that some want returned.
