Jacqui Lambie Is Not Your Average Politician
A housing commission background. A single mum of two children. A son addicted to ice, and a time - a dark time - that she wanted to end it all. Senator Jacqui Lambie knows a lot about the underdog. But behind the bolshy exterior is a woman who is surprisingly reasonable. The fierce Tasmanian independent has seen and been through a lot over the years, and she’s not afraid to talk about it. From that heated TV argument with Yassmin Abdel-Magied, to examining her love life and everything in between, this is a rare glimpse into the mind of a woman who believes more in fight than flight. Lisa Oldfield Is Not Your Average Housewife
Lisa Oldfield has no filter. The term was practically invented for her, according to Mia Freedman. The business woman turned soon-to-be Real Housewife of Sydney has a no bullsh*t attitude when it comes to life. She doesn’t care what people think of her parenting style, her marriage to One Nation founder David Oldfield or her conservative views. Which makes for some pretty interesting conversations. So grab a glass of red (like Lisa did while recording this episode) and get ready to have your mind...opened. Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman. With thanks to special guest Lisa Oldfield The Real Housewives of Sydney premieres on the 26th of February on Arena. Peggy Orenstein on Hookup-Culture, Casual Sex, and Our Girls
Brace yourself. Because Peggy Orenstein has spent seven years studying the sexual landscape for young girls, and it's confronting. From hookup culture, to casual sex (and how it has become the precursor to intimacy), she examines the ways in which porn and all its sexual myths have seeped into young people’s lives. So how do you explain to your 10-year-old daughter that a nude selfie isn't 'empowering'? How do you tell her that what she’s wearing is not really appropriate without slut shaming her? And how do you do it in a way where she wont rebel against you and do it all anyway? Dana Berkowitz and the Feminist Dilemma of Botox
Gender studies Professor and feminist Dana Berkowitz was strongly opposed to Botox. She would lecture students on body image and beauty culture, and was researching for a book on anti-aging practices in society. And then, while researching it, she had it. What followed for her were compliments. Many compliments. And she found herself at the centre of a conflict so many women have: Is there a feminist way to have Botox? Is using it to improve your appearance proof of a woman's right to choose? Or is it more evidence of women having to bow to a society that rewards youth and emphasises appearance? And how does it differ to colouring your hair, or shaving your legs? In a society obsessed with youth, Mia Freedman and Berkowitz tackle aging, body image, resting bitch-face, the patriarchial bargain, and the eternal question Mia Freedman faces: should I do it? Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman. With thanks to special guest Dana Berkowitz. Find Dana's book Botox Nation by going to apple.co/mamamia. You can also subscribe to all of our shows there. Georgie Stone, the Teen Who Changed Gender
Kids say some funny things sometimes. So when two-year-old Georgie Stone said 'Mum, I want a vagina', it seemed like an innocent, cute kid comment. And Mum barely blinked. But Georgie knew already that she was born in the wrong body. That she was transgender. And as the years unfolded, it became apparent. In 2015 - at just 15 years old - Georgie publicly came out as transgender. She did so to advocate for other trans kids not just in the media... but in the legal system, where delays in processes can mean a world of difference during puberty. This is the story of an open trans teen, her family, her friends, her brave and open decision to say 'this is me'. It's the story of a teenager battling prejudice, bullying and even legal hurdles to become a remarkable young woman. Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman.
