Jesus’ first miracle is called a sign, something that points beyond itself to a greater reality. This story is a sign of what Jesus gives to his followers: joy overflowing. At Christmas we sing ‘joy to the world’, and this passage shows us how we can experience the joy that Jesus gives.

The ‘mystery’ revealed in the gospel is God’s reconciling all things in Christ. The wonder of wonders is that the church becomes both an example of that revelation, as well as a proclaimer of it.

By describing the church as a ‘temple,’ Paul is reminding us that every Christian in the church is both needy and needed.
