A Practical Theology of Multiracial Experiences - With Aizaiah G. Yong
This week I am joined by Aizaiah Yong to discuss his fantastic book, 'Multiracial Cosmotheandrism: A Practical Theology of Multiracial Experiences'. Aizaiah critically considers how his expereince as a multi-racial person and the lives and spiritual experiences of mixed-race people can transform efforts for racial justice across the planet. Yong is inspired by the life and philosophy of Raimon Panikkar, an interreligious spiritual leader whose own experiences of the world were shaped by his life as a mixed-race person. In our conversation, Aizaiah focuses on the experiences of mixed-race people and challenges practical theology to broaden its own attention to practices of spirituality beyond mono-racial paradigms. Mixed-race people have profound resources for confronting and healing from racism and racial oppression within their lives and their stories, and Aizaiah calls for strengthened collective efforts to tend to the beautiful depths of spiritual formation for mixed-race people. What Good is Fear? - With Kutter Callaway
This week I am joined by Dr. Kutter Callaway for a special spooky edition of the podcast. Kutter recently released a high-quality podcast called "Be Afraid". His podcast takes you on a journey into the heart of one of the most popular genres of contemporary film and television: horror. Each episode discusses the nature of our fears and why we just can’t seem to look away from the things that terrify us. The show features interviews with major Hollywood filmmakers, well-known film critics, leading psychologists, and even a few exorcists. This podcast isn’t about how to avoid fear, how to leverage it, or even whether it’s okay to be afraid. Instead, it’s an exercise in learning how to fear rightly. Kutter and I take a deep dive into the show, discuss our own fears, wrestle with our own demons, and attempt to learn how to fear well. How to Flourish After Leaving Religion - With Daryl Van Tongeren
This week I had the pleasure of being joined by Dr. Daryl Van Tongeren to discuss his latest book "Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion". It is no secret that Americans today are deconstructing and leaving religion in record numbers. This shift comes with a high price as people's entire meaning making system is being taken away from them. How can people who are done with religion find meaning and purpose in the world? How can they process the grief that plagues these religious changes? Daryl draws from extensive research and psychological theories to examine the emotional and social processes involved with religious change and offers science-based guidance for building a new life after religion.
