Your Performance on Stage - Part 5

This week on The Big Talk, we're in Part 5 of our five-part series based around David Mamet's book True and False: Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor. I have absolutely loved sharing this book with you, and I'm so excited to be wrapping up this series today. As you know if you've been tuning in, I studied David Mamet's method as an actor here in New York City and rely on it heavily in directing my actors and speakers now. I love this book and this technique because the author is direct, unapologetic, and extremely specific in how and why this method works and is the best option for those taking a stage. Today's chapter is on the rehearsal process. I truly believe rehearsal and memorization are the way to go as a public speaker, and this week you're definitely going to see why.

Engaging in the Hard Conversations with Nik Walker

In today's episode of The Big Talk Podcast, we're talking about so many incredible topics that truly align with our values here at The Big Talk: humility, compassion, community, being willing to grow and engage, and ultimately using language and our voices powerfully for impact. For this conversation, I am joined by the absolutely amazing Nik Walker! Nik is an actor, cinephile, and theme park nerd. Currently leading the Broadway cast of Ain't Too Proud (after 3 years as Aaron Burr in the Broadway and touring companies of Hamilton), he's also a playwright, cohost of the activism talk show The Chaos Twins on BroadwayWorld, and his movie podcast, Little Justice, is streaming with the Broadway Podcast Network. In his free time between all of this, Nik is a professor at NYU. Originally from Boston, Nik is now a fellow New Yorker with a very successful performing career on Broadway. And although much of his childhood was defined by navigating being Black in a very racially divisive city, he loves that where he grew up gave him incredible access to the arts from a young age. Nik also credits much of the performer and person he is today to his mother, his hero, who was a single mom from Little Rock, AR. She was also the first Black woman to co-anchor a newscast in Boston and later became a minister. He knows that growing up watching her use her voice so impactfully helped to empower him to use his voice in the world as well.

Inside The Big Talk Academy with Jazz Biancci [Bonus Episode]

On this week's special bonus episode of the podcast, I am giving you a glimpse inside The Big Talk Academy. For this conversation, I am joined by the incredible Jazz Biancci — a speaker coach for The Big Talk and a former graduate of the program itself. Right before recording our conversation, Jazz and I had just wrapped up the Spring 2021 run of The Big Talk Academy, my 12-week signature speaker training and certification program that culminates in our virtual showcase. This particular cohort of speakers was so phenomenal, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to their talks in the upcoming bonus episodes of the podcast. The reason why I wanted to do this particular episode is that every single time we go through this 12-week program and certification process, we are all profoundly changed. We are all transformed. The speakers experience a transformation, and Jazz and I do as well. We also further deepen our community — which, as you probably already know, is one of our values here at The Big Talk. And today, I want you to be a part of this transformation and community as well. So get ready as we give you the inside scoop of what happens in The Big Talk Academy.

Your Performance on Stage - Part 4

This episode of The Big Talk is Part 4 in our series based around David Mamet's book True and False: Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor. I studied this technique as an actor in New York City and love using it when directing both actors and speakers now. This method is really focused on being present and in the moment when you take a stage. It's not about calling into the room past emotions and experiences. It relies on you understanding the words you are saying and then allowing those words to do their job. The chapter we're diving into today is called "Auditions," and I chose this section of the book because I think it highlights some fantastic ways for you to start thinking differently about your TED auditions and your TEDx applications — a process most of my speakers walk at some point in their careers.

Facing Failure and Finding Confidence with Lisa Carmen Wang

The Big Talk Podcast today is all about facing failure, finding confidence, and fully embracing your power in this world. For this interview, I am so excited to be joined by former Olympic-Level, USA National Champion & Hall of Fame Gymnast turned Serial Entrepreneur, Investor, Writer, Keynote Speaker, Executive Coach, & Unapologetic Feminist, Lisa Carmen Wang. Lisa is the host of The Confident Investor Podcast and Enoughness Podcast. Her last company, SheWorx, was acquired in 2019. Lisa was honored as Forbes 30 under 30, Red Bull Hero of The Year, & Entrepreneur Magazine's 100 Most Powerful Women. As an elite gymnast from a young age, Lisa learned early what it was like to fall down in front of a big audience. And more importantly, she learned how to always get back up and keep going. This perseverance has continued to drive her forward now as an entrepreneur, an investor, a writer, a speaker, and a human. At the age of 19, Lisa was slated for the 2008 Olympic gymnastics team — her lifelong dream at that point — when she missed the cut by a mere 0.25 of a point, which is the equivalent of one pinky toe's difference. However, she was able to take this public failure and reframe the experience as an opportunity and a blessing because it taught her how to break herself down and, more importantly, how to pick herself back up and turn into something stronger.
