How to Create Passive Income & a Location Independent Business with Matt Bowles

Matt Bowles is a location-independent entrepreneur who started his own online business after stumbling across The Four Hour Work Week in a Barnes and Noble bookstore back in 2007 - the day he got laid off from his 9-5 job. He now helps people create passive income streams through location-independent real estate investment properties and runs a podcast interviewing other digital nomad entrepreneurs. He has been featured in major national media and was named one of the "Top 50 Real Estate Opinion Makers and Market Leaders". Matt and his co-founders at Maverick Investor group have helped individual real estate investors buy over $100 million in residential investment property across 15 States. As a location-independent business owner, Matt runs his company (and hosts the podcast!) from epic locations around the world and has lived in over 50 different countries since 2013. He is a sought after speaker at events and conferences around the world relating to real estate investing, entrepreneurship, long-term world travel and the digital nomad lifestyle. Matt and Kristin met on Nomad Cruise 6, where they were both speakers. Before Maverick: Matt was a hip hop DJ in the 90s and his first entrepreneurial venture was starting his own mobile D.J. company during high school. He studied Sociology in College, then did a Masters Degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and spent time in Palestine, the north of Ireland, and other conflict regions doing peace and justice advocacy work. After that he worked in the nonprofit sector in Washington, DC, focusing on human rights and civil liberties issues in the U.S. At age 30, he was unexpectedly laid off from his job and on that day he decided to pivot completely and build a location-independent business that donates 10% of the net profits to causes that affect positive change in the world. He co-founded that company, Maverick Investor Group, with some amazing business partners, started traveling the world, and the rest is history. Is Your Job at Risk of Outsourcing or AI?

It's no secret that automation is eliminating jobs. The question is, will it replace yours? In this solo episode, Kristin explains how to decrease your risk of being replaced by a robot. Instead of focusing on excelling in one area of expertise, you can become a "specialized generalist." Or, someone who uniquely combines multiple skills and talents. While A.I. is expected to impact jobs in technology, human resources, and manufacturing at first, every sector of the economy will become affected. Experts expect up to 40% of the world's jobs to fall to A.I. in the next 15 years. Tune into this episode to find out what school never taught you this strategy for increasing your value in the modern-day workplace (but should have). Learn why becoming a "career polymath" will be critical in succeeding as a knowledge worker in the future economy. Tortuga Backpacks on How to Close the Gender Wage Gap for Remote Workers

Equal pay is a hot topic right now, especially after the USWNT won the World Cup of Soccer and with democratic presidential candidates joining the conversation. Luckily, remote companies like Tortuga Backpacks are leading the way with innovative policies to help close the gender pay gap. A recent survey of 2,520 self declared digital nomads revealed a troubling reality: In spite of the other progressive aspects of the digital nomad movement, there were significant and obvious pay gap amongst nomads despite isolating the variables of age, hours worked, education, and job roles between men and women. In this episode, Kristin talks with Tortuga's Jennifer Sutherland Miller about: - How she has sustained the digital nomad lifestyle for over 11 years in 50 countries - How she travels as a digital nomad family with 4 kids - What it's like to work for a fully remote company - How pay inequality affects men, women, minorities, and people of all nationalities - Why wage inequality is a global issue that affects everyone - How much should people make per hour in the US versus India or Guatemala? - How individuals and companies can take action now to make more money Behind the numbers: 52% of women digital nomads make less than $3000 a month, while 31% of male digital nomads fall into the same bracket. At the top of the scale, 23% of female digital nomads earn more than $5000 a month, while 43% of male digital nomads make more than $5000 a month. Nearly twice as many men are in the top earnings tier. And there are over 20% fewer men in the lower group. Kristin and Tortuga's Jenn have explored these findings in various blog articles: The Digital Nomad Wage Gap: It's Not a Level Playing Field How Digital Nomadism Can Solve the Global Gender Gap Time's Up for the Gender Pay Gap Learn more about Tortuga Backpacks: https://www.tortugabackpacks.com/ Check out the Tortuga Setout for Women: https://www.tortugabackpacks.com/products/setout-womens-travel-backpack About Kristin: Kristin Wilson is an online entrepreneur, writer, speaker, and content creator who has lived and worked in 60+ countries. The History of Remote Work

For the past 50 years, remote work has been treated as an "employee benefit" or reward that should be used sparingly. But to resist remote work is to resist change - a costly mistake that makes companies less competitive, innovative, and profitable. In this episode, Kristin explains how the 9-5 paradigm is outdated and why remote work is a return to basics rather than an innovation or trend. Remote work helps people and companies save money while making more. It increases employee morale, productivity, and quality of life. After listening, individuals will better understand their innate desire to work remotely. They will be more confident in asking their employers to work from home or seeking out remote job opportunities. Likewise, hiring managers and company decision-makers will be motivated to capture the many benefits of remote work as soon as possible. Rolf Potts on 25 Years of Vagabonding Around the World

Rolf Potts is an American author, essayist, screenwriter, and long-term traveler who is most known for his best-selling book, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel. Tim Ferriss has cited Vagabonding as the reason he decided to travel the world for a year in 2004-2005. As a result, Tim went on to write The Four-Hour Work Week, which is how I found out about Rolf's books in 2007. 12 years later, I enrolled as a student at Rolf's first Travel Memoir Workshop this summer (a new addition to his annual Paris Writing Workshop series). He sat down with me to talk about some of his biggest lessons and realizations from 25 years of traveling. He also shares tips on: • How to find adventure and avoid crowds during the social media era • What your bucket list should really be used for • Why you should consider hiring a guide when you travel (no matter how many countries you've been to) 20 years since writing Vagabonding, Rolf continues to inspire people with through his work. As technology and the ability to work remotely create unprecedented conditions for people to live a location-independent, digital nomad lifestyle, Rolf's advice remains as relevant as ever. Enjoy!
