Here's a little about our guest: Karl Steadman
Certified CrossFit® Coach (CF-L4)
CrossFit® Seminar Staff 2009 - present
CrossFit® UK & Eire Country Manager 2021 - present
Karl has been a CrossFit® Affiliate owner since 2006 and has over 16 years of experience of coaching CrossFit®, achieving his first qualification in 2004. He has been on CrossFit® Seminar Staff since 2009.
He holds BWL, Concept 2 Rowing, CrossFit® Gymnastics, CrossFit® Kids, CrossFit® Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit® Masters and SPEAR PDR qualifications. He is also an ATA Adaptive and Inclusive Trainer (AIT).
His most notable programming/coaching achievement to date was as part of the coaching team for Sam Briggs during the 2013 season, in which she won the CrossFit® Games.
Karl also has a very experienced background in judging and competition standards, having worked as Head Judge at the European/Meridian Regionals and as a Judge at the CrossFit® Games for a number of years.
Most recently, Karl became the CrossFit® UK & Eire Country Manager, as well as launching the Trainer Development and mentoring arm of the business.

624. Foundations of Effective Training | Breaking Down the L2 Manual with Steve Haydock
Steve Haydock joins us as we explore the differences between the Level 1 and Level 2 CrossFit courses and how the latter focuses on improving a trainer's coaching abilities.
Effective coaching requires proficiency in six key areas: teaching, seeing, correcting, group management, presence and attitude, and demonstration.A trainer's proficiency in these areas directly impacts the success of their clients, as it affects their ability to optimize work capacity across broad time and modal domains. While a newer trainer may see results due to the benefits of constantly varied functional movements at high intensity, an effective trainer can help clients achieve even greater levels of fitness and health.
It's important to note that these areas of coaching proficiency overlap and a weakness in any one area can inhibit a trainer's overall success. For example, even a trainer with strong technical skills may struggle to retain members without a personal connection.
Regardless of a trainer's current proficiency, a commitment to improving in each area is crucial for success. Like an athlete's path to refining movement mechanics, a trainer must refine their coaching skills over their career to become great. By doing so, they can develop virtuosity in coaching and help their clients achieve their fitness goals.
