The Music of Final Fantasy VII
Back in July 2020, Kirk made a special episode of his video games podcast Triple Click all about the music of Final Fantasy VII. It was basically an episode of Strong Songs, it just ran in a different podcast feed. Now it's July 2022, and with Strong Songs on break for the month, it seemed like a good time to run that episode in the Strong Songs feed. So, here it is!Original Show Notes: July 16, 2020It’s time for a new segment called “Hey, Listen!”, where Kirk takes listeners deep inside the music for a given video game. This first (and, as it turns out, only) edition focuses on 1997’s Final Fantasy VII, as well as some of the new arrangements from 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake. What makes the original game’s music so special? What new musical ideas are introduced in the Remake? And why is Aerith’s theme so magical? Put on your headphones for this one, and turn up the volume.Featuring multiple tracks from Final Fantasy VII (1997) composed by Nobuo Uematsu, as well as the following Uematsu compositions re-arranged for Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020):"Prelude" arranged by Yoshitaka Suzuki"Airbuster" arranged by Tadayoshi Makino"Main Theme from Final Fantasy VII - Sector 7 Undercity" arranged by Shotaro Shima"Aerith's Theme - Home Again" arranged by Shotaro Shima

"Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos
Tori Amos was one of the most distinctive songwriters of the 90s, and remains a powerful musical voice decades later. "Silent All These Years," one of many strong singles off of her 1992 solo debut, is a perfect encapsulation of so many of the things that make her music special. On this episode, Kirk takes a close look at this delicate, tenuously balanced song, from its floating opening piano line, to its expansive, time-warping bridge, to its hopeful conclusion. It's our turn now to stand where she stands; here, take hold of her hand.Written by: Tori AmosAlbum: Little Earthquakes, 1992Listen/Buy via SongwhipAlso featured:"Precious Things," also by Amos, from Little EarthquakesAmos performing "Silent All These Years" from Tori Amos Live at Montreaux 91/92OUTRO SOLOIST: Galen ClarkThis episode's outro soloist is the one and only Galen Clark. Galen plays keyboard and organ with the killer funk/soul group Outer Orbit, who you can find playing regularly around Portland, Oregon and occasionally on tour. Find more information at their website, https://www.outerorbitband.comUpdate 6/20: This episode initially misidentified the song's producer, Davitt Sigerson. It has been updated to credit him and string arranger Nick DeCaro, as well as to add some extra detail to the rhythmic breakdown of the intro (thanks Trevor!) and to add a second possible lyrical interpretation for the the third verse. The file swap may cause temporary issues with your download, depending on your podcast app, but it'll eventually work. Apologies for any inconvenience.--------------------JUNE 2022 WHOLE-NOTE PATRONSPatrick – Sean D. Winnie – Daniel Hannon-Barry – Prince M. "Wichita Lineman" by Jimmy Webb & Glen Campbell
I hear you singin' in the wire... I can hear you through the whine... and the Strong Songs podcast is talking about one of the best songs of all time.On this episode, Kirk takes on Jimmy Webb & Glen Campbell's ethereal workin' song "Wichita Lineman," an ode to the profound poetry within all of us. It's a song without a chorus or a bridge that still feels complete, thanks largely to the way it subtly climbs from the street, to the wire, and up into the heavens. "Just What I Needed" by The Cars
It's not the perfume that you wear... it's not the ribbons in your hair.... I guess it's just the perfect blend of synths and electric guitars that you bring to every song.Yes, it's time for Strong Songs to tackle The Cars, and their 1978 pop-rock classic "Just What I Needed." But while that song encapsulates everything that made the brilliant Boston five-piece great, Kirk decided to use his Walkman to occasionally fast-forward to compare and contrast with a second Cars classic from 1984.Written by: Ric OcasekAlbums: The Cars, 1978 and Heartbeat City, 1984Listen/Buy to both albums on all platforms via SongwhipALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen from A Night at the Opera, 1975"Drive," "Good Times Roll," and "My Best Friend's Girl" by Ric Ocasek/The Cars from The Cars, 1978 and Heartbeat City, 1984OUTRO SOLOIST: BJ CordThis episode's outro soloist is BJ Cord, a fantastic trumpet player based in Portland. Story of a Session Guitarist, with Andrew Synowiec
You might not know Andrew Synowiec's name, but chances are you've heard his guitar playing. Heck, chances are you heard his guitar playing this week.Synowiec makes his living as an LA session guitarist, with a list of credits as long as the California coastline. Among those credits: you can hear him on the score for pretty much every recent Disney film (Frozen, CoCo, Zootopia), as well superhero flicks like Logan and Spider-Man: Far From Home, TV shows like The Simpsons and The Good Place, as well as on records with recording artists like The Who, HAIM, P!nk, Nick Jonas, Donna Summer, and so many more. A couple weeks back, Kirk sat down with Andrew to talk about his career as a session player, how he finds a good balance when doing creative work for hire, his approach to practicing and guitar tone, how he designed and built his home studio, and why he continues to make the time for his own personal music projects.FEATURED/DISCUSSED ON THIS EPISODE:Guy Lacour etude No. 4 as performed by David Hernando Vitores: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyGo9NmZUNwWes Montgomery on “No Blues” from Smokin’ at the Half Note w/ the Wynton Kelly Trio, 1965“Where The Streets Have No Name” by U2 from The Joshua Tree, 1987“Sad But True” by Metallica from Metallica, 1991“Blood and Thunder” by Mastodon from Leviathan, 2004“Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley from Grace, 1994“Already Taken,” “Second Story,” and “Humor Me” by Andrew Synowiec from Second Story, 2019“Jonkoloni” by Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba from Segu Blue, 2006, feat. the Ngoni“Salsa Caliente (Versión Aumentada)” by Meridian Brothers from Desperanza, 2012“You Are Young” by Keane from Strangeland, 2012A video with Andrew about his work and his home studioA Spotify playlist Andrew maintains featuring things he's played onAndrew's website, with lots more credits and other info--------------------FEBRUARY 2022 WHOLE-NOTE PATRONSDaniel Hannon-Barry – RR Prince M.
