#94: General Sir Rupert Smith KCB, DSO & Bar, OBE, QGM - Former DSACEUR & Army’s Most Respected Strategic Thinker
General Sir Rupert Smith, is a retired British Army Officer of 40 years' experience. He commanded forces at every rank from Second Lieutenant to General in all five continents. On three occasions in the 1990s, he commanded formations of some 20,000 people and 750 fighting vehicles and airplanes to achieve strategic goals: in the Gulf War 90/91, in Bosnia 95 and in Northern Ireland 96-98. Additionally, from 1999 until 2001 he was the Deputy Commander of all NATO forces engaged in operations in the Balkans, notably Kosovo. On each occasion the objectives, the politics, the theatre, the opposition and the forces were different and often multinational. He found in exercising leadership at this level it is well to remember that: fame has no present and popularity no future.Based on this experience he will talk about leadership, particularly strategic leadership.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #93: Cath Possamai - CEO of the Recruiting Group Capita
Cath walked into an army recruiting centre when she was 18, only to walk out again 5 minutes later disappointed and confused at the apparent lack of interest from the male recruiting sergeant, dismissing all thoughts of a possible military career. 25 (ish!) years later she now leads recruitment for the army. In the last two years, alongside her army counterpart, she has overseen the turnaround of a famously broken recruiting operation and private / public sector partnership between the Army and Capita. In the intervening period, following a sports science degree, Cath has led a series of large scale corporate recruitment operations in the UK and Europe before completing the circle begun at age 18.Cath’s most important leadership advice is to be utterly authentic. By which she means, be yourself. Don’t think that you need to pretend to be more serious, more intelligent – or even less intelligent – than you really are. Don’t pretend you know things when you don’t. Don’t keep quiet when you have a contribution to make because you think others around you are better, or more qualified. She spent several years earlier in her career thinking that she needed to project a layer of gravitas that she didn’t really feel. She also thought that as she got into leadership roles she needed to know all the answers. To all the questions. All of the time. Clearly that’s ridiculous. The real art of leadership is understanding what you don’t know, assembling a diverse team around you who complement your weaknesses with their strengths, and empowering them.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #92: Mike Hope-Milne - Enterprise Director Pearl & Dean
Mike first came into the media industry reasonably late, at the age of 26, after having spent some time in Denmark working out what he wanted to do with his life. He joined Zenith Media as a graduate trainee TV buyer (buying TV advertising space on behalf of clients), and then worked at a number of agencies and media owners before coming to Pearl & Dean, where he has been Enterprise Director for the last 14 years. During his time at Pearl & Dean they have been through three changes of ownership and have had to face many challenges along the way. As we face the biggest challenge of our lifetime, Mike still believes in the mantra of focussing on the things that you can do and not getting bogged down in the things that you cannot change or influence. It means being prepared to be flexible and fleet of foot and this is only possible if you have a solid and supportive team around you. #InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #90: Leila Woodington - Marketing Director Northern Europe Facebook
Leila has been at Facebook for over 9 years, initially leading B2B marketing efforts in the UK before taking on responsibility for Northern Europe. She’s had the privilege of growing into a senior leadership role while at Facebook. Prior to Facebook she spent almost 6 years at PayPal, where she was responsible for B2B acquisition marketing, with a focus on large enterprise businesses and top tier SMEs.Leila believes that to be a truly effective leader, you must lead by example, not command and control. In her experience, the best leaders do not whip their team into shape from the back of the pack. They lead the charge, while carrying their share of the weight.Top Tip: Listen more than you talk. And unless you are literally saving lives, always remember it’s ‘PR not ER' – perspective is essential.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #89: James Cameron VP Leadership Initiatives Walmart Stores
James is currently responsible for executive development, high potential programs up to senior executive level and driving strategic initiatives that will evolve Walmart to meet future challenges, the scale is the challenge, 1.3 million associates in the US, 2.3 million world-wide. His career before Walmart was six years of risk and business consultancy and a 26-year military career. After an Infantry (Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment) career up to battalion command his last appointment before retiring early was as Assistant Director Counter Terrorism in the British Ministry of Defence. In 2007 he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty the Queen for that role, an award that he should probably now give back as he is now a US citizen! A key lesson he has learned since leaving the military is that vulnerability is strength.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast.
