#257: Christian Scotland-Williamson - Broadcaster & Athlete
Christian is a former two-sport professional athlete playing both Premiership Rugby (Harlequins and Worcester Warriors) and for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League.Christian’s unconventional journey to the highest level of two sports has not been without significant challenges. He was never a part of the traditional academy pipeline to the professional ranks or selected to play representative youth rugby. Christian was a self-taught rarity who got his chance in his third year of study at Loughborough University. An unexpected phone call to play for the Worcester Warriors reserve team in a one-off fixture finally gave him the chance he deserved. The club would go on to sign him to his first professional contract in the changing room before running out and scoring on his 1st XV debut. Christian took his chance and never looked back.A near career-ending injury kept Christian out of rugby for almost two years. During a gruelling rehabilitation process, Christian was able to develop his mind while his body was recovering. Using the time to go back to university and study for a master’s degree in International Business. In 2018 Christian took a leap of faith and decided to walk away from rugby and pursue a career in the NFL. Moving to America to chase a dream in a sport he had never played, deciding to seek opportunity over security.Christian is now a member of the RFU Judicial Panel dealing with Disciplinary and Discrimination matters. Christian is a Broadcaster for talkSPORT & the BBC, Ambassador for the NFL, and a future Barrister. Christian has a deep commitment to social mobility through the combination of sport and education. Christian acts as a mentor for young people in underserved communities and shares his living testimony that when the dream is big enough, the odds don’t matter. #254: Craig Hatch: President Tetra Tech UK
Craig is an award-winning business leader, with a successful track record over a 38-year period. His experience is broad, working across many industrial sectors, as well as including significant time working within the public, commercial and voluntary sectors. This experience has been within businesses of various sizes, from his own SME practice, a larger SME, large Housing Associations, medium size PLC’s, a FTSE 50 PLC and most recently within a NASDAQ listed organisation. His current role is as UK President of Tetra Tech, a leading, global provider of consulting and engineering services.He has supplemented this experience through voluntary positions in areas he is passionate to support, currently including Chair of WellChild, the national sick children’s charity and in his local community as Chair of the Clean Energy Panel for the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. Craig has also held voluntary positions within his professional organisations, formerly as Chair of the Faculty of Architecture and Surveying within the CIOB and as a member of the Professional Group Board for Building Surveying within the RICS. Craig is a Fellow of the RICS, APM and the CIOB.Craig has been acknowledged by a trio of very different awards, reflecting the of interests he is involved in. He was awarded Cumbria Businessperson of the Year, and soon afterward received the West Cumbrian Carer of the Year Award. He was also part of a parent advisory group who won ‘Team of the Year’ at the prestigious national WellChild awards. Outside work, Craig’s time is dedicated to his family, his wife Ellis and his four adult children who are now young adults. Eleanor (26), Fraser (24), Ewan (22) and Alexander (20). Fraser, has acute and complex health needs requiring 24 hour care and for all Craig shares supporting carer duties with Ellis to keep Fraser well and at home in the family environment and taking him for long wheelchair pushes around the Cumbrian hills. In his ‘spare’ time Craig is a runner, being a member of Cumberland Athletics Club and regularly takes part in fundraising events, which included the Great North Run and London Marathon last year. Sarah is CEO of Asthma + Lung UK, leading the fight to improve care and support for everyone with a lung condition. She oversees all aspects of the organisation. Sarah is Co-Chair of the NHS England National Respiratory Board, which directs NHS England’s efforts to improve outcomes for those with lung disease. She also sits on the Board of the Accelerating Access Collaborative, a key government initiative aimed at encouraging swifter adoption of new technologies and treatments to tackle ill health. Sarah has a background in policy and communications, having spent many years as Executive Director of Policy, Information and Communications at Cancer Research UK, has worked in the civil service, Parliament and at membership organisation, the Sport and Recreation Alliance. Sarah is a Trustee of mental health research charity MQ, a member of the Richmond Group of health charities and a previous trustee of ASH, the Association of Medical Research Charities, the National Cancer Research Institute and Bliss, the special care baby charity.Sarah is passionate about improving outcomes for all those with a lung condition and reversing the historic lack of investment in lung research.
