#377 What Does a Fitness Hiatus Do to Us Physically?
What Does a Fitness Hiatus Do to Us Physically? New Research from Sabrena Jo. The Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday Program Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #377. Today's show is brought to you by Stander, at Shopstander.com, where their way of doing business is about you being and remaining independent. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. On the Fitness Friday program we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. But, we've not talked much about getting back to the gym after taking a small hiatus... it can feel like lifting weights, running, or balancing for the very first time. The change is real, and can be pretty discouraging—physically and mentally. But how much is that really throwing you off your fitness goal? And how long is too long before you've disrupted all that hard work you put in? Today on the Fitness Friday show, we'll hear from Sabrena Jo about what happens to your body when you fall off the workout wagon (hey, life happens), and how much progress you really lose. Life does happen, and in some cases, sometimes your body may need the rest, and a time to reset. For most people that are exercising regularly and have a moderate to solid conditioning level [you work out four to six times a week], a week off is an opportunity to take a break and refresh the mind and body, and assuming you don't make it regular habit, you don't need to stress about falling out of shape. Our guest today, recurring exercise researcher, Sabrena Jo, from the American Council on Exercise has new research on how and if your fitness level can fade. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to tell us, based on new research from the American Council on Exercise, which we'll link to, "Yes, your fitness will fade over time." But, Sabrena Jo will help us understand by how much, and by how quickly? Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. #375 HeartFlow Technology - Interview with CTO, Charley Taylor, Ph.D
HeartFlow Technology - Interview with CTO, Charley Taylor, Ph.D. Science & Technology Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Science & Technology Interview Series, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #375. Today's episode is brought to you by HeartFlow. As part of our Science and Technology Interview series, today's show is excellent, behind the scenes look into the use of a new heart disease diagnostic test using precise 3D images, and at the same time, it reduces healthcare system costs. Today we're speaking with HeartFlow co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Charley Taylor. HeartFlow's Charley Taylor is that rare combination of businessperson and academician. While getting his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, Charley Taylor spotted an opportunity to combine computer simulation methods with medical imaging data for patient-specific modeling of blood flow to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. We've talked about Coronary Artery Disease previously, it being the most common type of heart disease…it is the leading cause of death in the US in both men and women, about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack, and over 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. Charley Taylor answers our questions about Coronary Artery Disease, about potential cost savings to the healthcare system, and future of HeartFlow, and the next healthcare frontier: web, tablets, apps, etc…that emphasize precise visuals, 3D modeling and the sheer power to improve patient care. We'll be joined by Charley Taylor in just a moment, but I want to emphasize the importance of how HearfFlow technology transforms the way cardiovascular disease is diagnosed and treated. Further, we've been given an excellent brochure from HeartFlow, emphasizing the HeartFlow analysis, to better educate you all about the questions, details, and concerns you may have with respect to Coronary Artery Disease. Links to the downloadable brochure will be in today's show notes, or you can email me at info@notold-better.com, and I'll make sure you get one, but please if you're at risk, unsure of your risk, or want to know for a family member, take the next step in a treatment plan that has "demonstrated higher diagnostic performance compared to other non-invasive cardiac tests." That's according to published data, which we'll also link to. Please, though, now join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Dr. Charley Taylor. #374 Grandkids & Exercise - Fitness Friday, Sabrena Jo
Grandkids & Exercise - Fitness Friday, Sabrena Jo Fitness Friday, The Not Old Better Show Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #374. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. We talk about this a lot on The Not Old Better Show, and our audience knows well, that as we get older, we tend to spend less time in physical activity than when we were younger. According to the Center for Disease Control, less than half of adults exercise enough to meet health guidelines, and even fewer older adults tend to do so (cdc.gov). While getting older is a predictor of reduced physical activity, children today are also getting less physical activity than they did in previous generations, to the detriment of their health and physical development. So, if you are a grandparent (or have friends with grandchildren), you might agree that kids today have less unstructured free play than you did during your own youth. When I was a child, I spent time after school and on weekends riding my bike everywhere, fitness and Physical Education classes were more the norm, and I played with friends all manner of sports, like skiing, which I've talked about before a lot. From what I see, children today are spending more time in front of televisions, computers, and mobile devices. Many governments around the world, like here in the US, have launched campaigns to increase the amount of time families spend in an activity. Both Go4Life.gov and HealthFinder.gov are great websites where you can read about the issue and ways to address this growing health, fitness, and creating exercise habits. But, getting back to grandparents, the American Council on Exercise has new research on how to get kids and grandparents working together, exercising, and having fun all at the same time. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to talk about a few exercises you can do both on your own and with the younger generation. Since getting older means that we spend less time in physical activity, and with kids moving around less as well, why not set a great example and have fun at the same time! Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. #373 One Giant Leap - Apollo at 50 - Charles Fishman
One Giant Leap - Apollo at 50 - Charles Fishman Inside Science & Technology Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #373. As part of our Science & Technology, author interview series, today's guest is author, historian, journalist, Charles Fishman. As a reporter, Charles Fishman has tried to get inside organizations, both familiar and secret, and explain how they work. In his most recent book, One Giant Leap, Charles Fishman introduces readers to the men and women who worked to solve 10,000 problems before astronauts could reach the Moon. From the research labs of MIT, where the eccentric and legendary pioneer Charles Draper created the tools to fly the Apollo spaceships, to the factories where dozens of women sewed spacesuits, parachutes, and even computer hardware by hand, Fishman captures the exceptional feats of these ordinary Americans. One Giant Leap is the captivating story of men and women charged with changing the world as we knew it—their leaders, their triumphs, their near disasters, all of which led to arguably the greatest success story, and the greatest adventure story, of the twentieth century. Of course, one of those leaders, President John F. Kennedy astonished the world on May 25, 1961, when he announced to Congress that the United States should land a man on the Moon by 1970. No group was more surprised than the scientists and engineers at NASA, who suddenly had less than a decade to invent space travel. Hearing those stirring words from President Kennedy in 1961 brings back that unique, special time in history. I've invited Charles Fishman author of the new book, One Giant Leap, to talk about his book, the history of that impossible Apollo Mission, and the remarkable story of the trailblazers and the ordinary Americans on the front lines of the epic mission to reach the moon. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Charles Fishman. Since then, he has mastered the system and learned how to beat the airlines at their own game, using their own rules. In those roles, Nicholas Kralev has learned how to navigate the secrets of the airline industry and get the travel he wants at the price he wants. #370 Tim Church, MD. Why Exercise is the Only Way
Tim Church, MD. Why Exercise is the Only Way Fitness Friday Series, The Not Old Better Show Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #370. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We all know we should exercise. But few realize that being physically active is the single most important thing that most of us can do to improve or maintain our health. Regular movement not only lowers the risk of developing or dying from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, it also prevents certain cancers, improves mood, builds bones, strengthens muscles, expands lung capacity, reduces the risk of falls and fractures, and helps keep excess weight in check. And those are just some of the more familiar effects. But, it's that last one that really grabs everyone's attention: Weight Loss. By only focusing on weight loss, we're downplaying everything else. According to our guest today, Dr. Tim Church, get moving first, then focus on nutrition, cardio, weight resistance and tracking it all. Tim Church, M.D., M.P.H, Ph.D., is one of the country's leading physicians in exercise and obesity research. As an author of over 200 research articles, Dr. Church has received numerous awards for his research in preventative health. Unlike many popular fitness books, "Move Yourself," advocates engaging in pure activity, not an exercise plan. Dr. Church resides in Dallas, is a two-time finisher of Ironman distance triathlons and currently is a purple belt in Jui Jitsui. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Dr. Tim Church. #368 Apollo At 50 - Teasel Muir-Harmony
Apollo At 50 - Teasel Muir-Harmony The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Science Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #368. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview series, we are joined today by scientist, author, explorer, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony. Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, July 10, 2019, and the title of her presentation is Apollo at 50: A History in Artifacts. With those words, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one liners. Our Not Old Better Show audience, many of whom listened in from earth as Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission was on the landing site of the moon. The entire Project Apollo ranks among the most bold and challenging undertakings of the 20th century. Within less than a decade, the United States leapt from suborbital spaceflight to landing humans on the moon and returning them safely back to Earth. Hundreds of thousands of people helped make these missions possible, while billions more around the world followed the flights. Fifty years after the first lunar landing, our guest today, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony, curator of Apollo spacecraft at the Air and Space Museum, reassesses the history of Project Apollo through the most evocative objects of the Space Age. The material legacy of the Project Apollo missions is immense—with thousands of artifacts from capsules to spacesuits to the ephemera of life aboard a spacecraft represented in the Smithsonian's collections. Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony examines artifacts and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum collections that highlight how Project Apollo touched people's lives, both within the space program and around the world, from the Wright Bros. at Kitty Hawk to Neil Armstrong at Tranquility Base. More than space hardware alone, the objects Dr Muir-Harmony features reflect the deep interconnection between Project Apollo and broader developments in American society, politics and life. That, of course, that was our guest today, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony's reading from her new book, Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects (National Geographic) is available for sale and signing.
