His primary research interests are metaphysics and its history (mainly in German philosophy). His first book, Kant’s Modal Metaphysics, was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. While most of Dr. Stang’s published work has been about Kant, he is increasingly interested in pre-Kantian rationalism (Leibniz, Spinoza) and in post-Kantian figures, especially Hegel and Heidegger. He also works on contemporary metaphysics and aesthetics. His side interests include: Jewish philosophy, early analytic philosophy, philosophy of mathematics, and critical theory. In this episode, we focus on Kantian philosophy, particularly on his metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. We start by presenting what metaphysics is, and the sorts of questions it deals with. We also talk about hos modern metaphysics positions itself in relation to science and Physics, referring on the way to the epistemological limits of a materialist approach. Then we get into Kant’s metaphysics, and explore concepts like the noumenon and the phenomenon. After that, we move to his epistemology, and discuss sensibility, the categories of understanding, and pure Reason with its antinomies. Finally, we go through Kantian ethics, and the necessity of a God, a soul and free will. Camerer is the Robert Kirby Professor of Behavioral Finance and Economics at the California Institute of Technology, where he teaches cognitive psychology and economics. His work seeks a better understanding of the psychological and neurobiological basis of decision-making in order to determine the validity of models of human economic behavior. His research uses mostly economics experiments—and occasionally field studies—to understand how people behave when making decisions (e.g., risky gambles for money), in games, and in markets (e.g., speculative price bubbles). In 2013, Dr. Camerer was named a MacArthur Fellow. In this episode, we focus on the modern science of economics, integrated with cognitive and experimental psychology, and neuroscience. We first discuss the different types of decision-making that we are cognitively endowed with. We address what rationality is from an economics perspective. We talk about the importance of collecting data from different sources to develop a full understanding of our cognitive mechanisms, from psychology, economics, anthropology and neuroscience. Then, we focus on the current state of the art in neuroscience, its limitations as a discipline and at the level of its imaging techniques, and the knowledge we can draw from it. We also refer to the limitations of lab experiments, and how they can be complemented by field studies in natural settings. We also talk about individualist vs collectivist approaches in economics; how to think about social norms; and what are “beliefs” in economics. Finally, we discuss the concept of “risk” in economics, the factors behind risky gambling in the stock market, and possible ways to prevent it. He holds a BCL from University College Cork (2006); an LLM from Trinity College Dublin (2007); and a PhD from University College Cork (2011). He was lecturer in law at Keele University in the UK from 2011 until 2014. He joined NUI Galway in July 2014. Dr. Danaher’s research focuses on the ethical, legal and social implications of new technologies. He maintains a blog called Philosophical Disquisitions, and produces a podcast with the same title. He’s a sociologist and physician known for his research on social networks and on the socioeconomic, biosocial, and evolutionary determinants of behavior, health, and longevity. Dr. Christakis was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2006; of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2010; and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. In 2009, he was named to the Time 100, Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2009 and again in 2010, he was named by Foreign Policy magazine to its list of top global thinkers. He’s the author of Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society. His research interests include: evolutionary psychology, evolution of sociality, psychology of cooperation and punishment, ecological rationality, and psychology of foraging. Dr. Krasnow’s primary line of research focuses on the evolutionary origins and computational design of the mechanisms underlying human cooperation and social behavior. Why are we more generous, trusting and cooperative, but also vengeful and punitive than an otherwise rational analysis would predict? He has been exploring how the answers to these questions neatly fall out by considering reliable features of the ancestral ecology and simple cognitive mechanisms that could evolve to benefit from them. In this episode, we talk about different aspects of human sociality. We first discuss how we evolved to be so generous, trusting and cooperative. We address the different types of natural selection, namely, sexual selection and social selection, and also if we need group selection to explain things like strong reciprocity. We then talk about uncertainty in human interactions, and why we cooperate in one-shot interactions. He was born in Athens, Greece and he completed his post-graduate and graduate studies in the United Kingdom. He has published several peer-reviewed papers, books and chapters in books in the area of evolutionary psychology. In this episode, we focus on the evolutionary bases of singlehood, parent-offspring conflict and mating control, and the evolution of human sexuality. We start with singlehood, and discuss it as a contextual strategy, and also why so many people in modern societies are single and have difficulty getting and retaining a mate. We also refer to mating in traditional (hunter-gatherer) and historical societies, and the psychological costs of being single. We then move on to mating control by parents, how parents manipulate their offspring’s mate choices, and how societies developed mating control institutions.
