In a bold and humble act, she washes His feet with her tears and dries them with her hair. Though her actions would have been risky in that setting, Jesus uses the moment to reveal a powerful truth: those who have been forgiven much, love much. What’s remarkable is that her love and devotion are shown even before she hears His words of forgiveness.This scene is full of courage, faith, and hope. Her desire to come to Jesus was greater than the risk she faced. What an encouragement for us today! Jesus has removed every barrier that keeps us from coming to Him. This is Redeemer Downtown's live stream 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, March 1, 2026.Today’s passage is layered with significant details describing this scene where Jesus comes across a funeral procession and his engagement with the widow and her son. We are told the woman is a widow and her only son has died. Her level of loss is catastrophic, especially in this time period, and yet full of hope because of Jesus. We see such a picture of compassion where Jesus steps in, reaching out to touch the coffin (when it was considered unclean to do so) and speaking the son back to life.  We see time and time again how Jesus was moved with compassion and mercy to action to alleviate heartache and suffering that even death can not hold him back.  As we reflect today, perhaps we can gently ask ourselves: What might Jesus be inviting me to trust Him with? A look at Jesus calling ordinary people into friendship and faith. A surprising invitation that welcomes outsiders to the table. A discussion of human resistance to the word sin and four biblical terms that name our condition. A contrast between joyful acceptance and critical exclusion, ending with a practical call to charity and joy.

Today’s passage invites us to an awareness of our human need at deeper levels not just to what we perceive on the surface but what will both satisfy and nourish us in mind, body, and soul. The Lord sees far beyond what we comprehend and is intentional in his care for our whole being beginning with fulfilling the need for a relationship with him and beyond. Let’s lean in together and discover more of His loving heart and faithful care for us.

As we continue our sermon series, Encountering Jesus, we dive deeper into the heart of Jesus and His forgiveness as it relates to the Mosaic Law. Today, we’ll explore how sin separates us from God and from one another and the beautiful truth that Jesus meets us in our brokenness. As the true temple and the perfect sacrifice, He opens the way for us to be welcomed back, restored in our relationship with God and reconciled to each other.

As we dive deeper into our series Encountering Jesus, we step into a powerful moment where Jesus meets Simon (and James and John!) right in the middle of their work in Luke 5.Though they were experienced fishermen, Jesus reshapes their understanding of him and invites them into something far greater than they imagined. In that moment, Simon in particular, begins to see both who Jesus truly is and who he is in light of him. Through this story, Jesus reveals the new values of his kingdom—reshaping what it truly means.

As we continue in our series of Encountering Jesus, we’ll reflect this week on what mattered to Him. We’ll look at how Jesus spoke with authority, acted with compassion when healing the sick, and delivered people from unclean spirits all while choosing humility over fame. Though He could have sought recognition and power, Jesus chose a different path—the way of the cross.
