MVP106: Mary Stevens - Soft Skills in Violence Prevention & Management
Happy holidays!
I am joined once again by Mary Stevens, an accomplished martial arts instructor and also lead instructor at Violence Prevention & Management UK. Mary is a lifelong learner and incredible teacher, so I took the opportunity to pick her brain about her last 12 months of study which includes seminars with the likes of Richard Dimitri, Pamela Armitage, Dr Tammy Yard McCracken, Rory Miller and me! To compare notes on how each of these world-leading instructors taught their "soft skills" material made for a great conversation.
We also touch on Mary's important work with FairFight, bringing self-protection skills to disadvantaged girls in India.

MVP102: The Safest Family on the Block with Jason Brick
"Making the decision to have a child...is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
Keeping our kids safe (and ourselves sane) is one of our most important duties as parents...but the best advice for doing that is scattered across dozens of disciplines. Karate teachers, police, sociologists, and alarm companies all have their own opinions, and some of them even contradict each other.
Jason Brick is the host of the Safest Family on the Block where he interviews leading experts in everything from special warfare, to first aid, to child psychology, to consumer safety, bringing you the information you need to run a safe, secure, and happy household.

Kerry “Kato” Murakami, the founder of Rectitude Training, LLC, is devoted to training law enforcement and the civilian defender. Kerry is a retired law enforcement officer from the State of Illinois and has spent all twenty eight years in the patrol division. He initially became a defensive tactics instructor and field training officer in 1995, a firearms instructor in 2003 and finally a scenario based instructor in 2014.
As a martial artist, Kerry received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Professor Mark Vives of New Breed Training Center in 2019. He has also consulted with outside law enforcement agencies on creating and updating training programs, including their agency's combatives/jiu-jitsu clubs.
In early 2021 Rectitude Training, LLC became a preferred provider to Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency (IRMA), one of the largest risk pools in the Chicagoland area. The goal is to increase frequency and consistency of Defensive Tactics/Combatives training while reducing Officer’s and suspect's injuries.

MVP100: The Future of the Self Protection Industry
I am using this milestone episode of the Managing Violence Podcast to plant a flag.
It is time we tear down this makeshift industry we have continued to patch, fix and repair over the past 70 or so years. Like a loved family home that has been renovated and added to in ad hoc fashion as it has been outgrown, sometimes the best option is to take the lessons and rebuild for the future. It's time for us to create something that is truly fit for purpose.
In this podcast I talk about what I think is the future of our industry. A move towards violence prevention and management, the incorporation of best-practice risk management principles and formalising professional education for instructors.
Whether you agree or disagree, please feel free to share your comments wherever you find this episode or email me at joe@joesaunders.com.au
