The Marrow Controversy Podcast

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. William VanDoodewaard. Dr. VanDoodewaard is Professor of Church History at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. He has held appointments as Visiting Research Fellow in the School of History and Anthropology at Queen’s University Belfast and Visiting Scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary for his ongoing work in the history of biblical interpretation. Prior to coming to PRTS, Dr. VanDoodewaard taught at Patrick Henry Col­lege, near Washington, D.C., and at Huntington University in Indiana. He has written for Books & Culture, The Journal of British Studies, Themelios, Puritan Reformed Journal, Westminster Theological Journal, and online at The Gospel Coalition and Reformation21. He is also a contributor to a number of books, and the author of two: The Quest for the Historical Adam and The Marrow Controversy and Seceder Tradition. Dr. VanDoodewaard is an ordained minister who has served as a church planter; he worships with his family at Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Today Dr. Master is going to talk with Dr. Vandoodewaard about the Marrow Controversy.  This controversy was not only important to Scottish Presbyterians in the 18th century but it has lasting relevance in the church to this day.  So, grab that cup of coffee and join us at the table! The Theology of Martin Luther

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master continues his conversation with Dr. Robert Kolb. Dr. Kolb was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and attended Concordia College, St. Paul, Minn. (1959-1961); Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind. (1961-1963); and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (1963-1968, M.Div., S.T.M.). After completing his doctorate in history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1973), he served as director of the Center for Reformation Research in St. Louis (1973-1977). Concordia College, St. Paul, called him in 1977 to teaching positions in the departments of religion and history; he also served as acting president (1989-1990). In 1993 Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, called him to be Missions Professor of systematic theology and director of the Institute for Mission Studies. From 1994 through 2010 he taught abroad, chiefly in post-Soviet Europe, for three months of the year. Dr. Kolb served as associate editor (1973-1994) and co-editor (1995-1997) of The Sixteenth Century Journal and is still co-editor, with A.R. Victor Raj, of Missio Apostolica (since 1996). He was a member of the Commission on Theology and Church Relations of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (1984-1992) and its chair (1990-1992). He served as president of the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference (1981-1982) and the Society for Reformation Research (1994-1996). Since 1993 he has been a member of the Continuation Committee of the International Congress for Luther Research. Kolb has lectured at more than 40 educational institutions on five continents and at many ecclesiastical gatherings. Since 1996 he has been Gastdozent at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule in Oberursel, Germany. Valparaiso University (2000), Concordia University Saint Paul (2005), and Concordia University Irvine (2008) have awarded him the Doctor of Letters honorary degree. Dr. Kolb has published extensively and he is an expert in the life and theology of Martin Luther.  This week will focus on the theology of Martin Luther. The Ruling Elder Podcast

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. Calvin L. Troup.  Dr. Troup is the president of Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA). Before becoming Geneva's twentieth President since 1848 Dr. Troup was Associate Professor and Director of the Rhetoric Ph.D. Program in the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. He earned his B.A. from Geneva College (1983) and the M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. His communication research agenda focuses on the rhetoric and philosophy of St. Augustine and Rhetoric of Technology from media ecology perspectives informed by the work of Jacques Ellul and Walter J. Ong. His published work includes Augustine for the Philosophers: The Rhetor of Hippo, the Confessions, and the Continentals (2014), Temporality, Eternity, and Wisdom: The Rhetoric of Augustine's Confessions (1999), scholarly book chapters and articles in journals such as Communication Quarterly, Explorations in Media Ecology, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, The Journal of Communication and Religion, and The Journal of Business Ethics. Dr. Troup has edited the Journal of Communication and Religion and is the editor-elect of Explorations in Media Ecology the international journal of the Media Ecology Association.  Dr.Troup entered the academy after serving as a press aide in the U.S. House of Representatives and working as an association executive for a national non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. Today Dr. Master is going to talk with Dr. Troup about the office of the ruling elder.  Dr. Troup is well suited to discuss this topic since he has served as a ruling elder in three different Presbyterian congregations.  He is currently a ruling elder at Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Gibsonia, PA. Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology: Sola Scriptura

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. Daniel Doriani.   Dr. Doriani serves as vice president of strategic academic projects and professor of theology and ethics at Covenant Theological Seminary. He previously served as senior pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Clayton, Missouri.  Dr. Doriani is an author of numerous books and is a speaker much in demand. Dr. Doriani was one of the main speakers for the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology this year.  The conference theme was Reformation: Recovering the Essence of the Gospel.  One of the topics Dr. Doriani addressed was the all important reformation principle - sola scriptura! Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology: The Priesthood of All Believers

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Rev. Richard Davis Phillips.  Dr. Phillips has been the Senior Minister of Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina (PCA) since July, 2007. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan, and a master of business administration degree at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and a master of divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary. After graduation he joined the pastoral staff of the church where he came to faith, Tenth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, PA. There, Rick was mentored by the well-known Bible teacher, Dr. James Montgomery Boice, and began his calling as a weekly preacher of God’s Word. After serving at Tenth Presbyterian from 1995-2002, Dr. Phillips accepted the call to be Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church of Margate, FL. After five years there, he moved to Greenville. Among his many activities, he serves on the board and council of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the council of The Gospel Coalition, and the board of trustees of Westminster Theological Seminary. He is Chairman of the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. Together with Philip Graham Ryken, he is series co-editor of the Reformed Expository Commentary series. Dr. Phillips is one of the main speakers for the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology this year.  The conference theme is Reformation: Recovering the Essence of the Gospel and is being held April 28-30.  Dr. Phillips will be speaking on the topic of the Priesthood of all Believers. Blue Ridge Wrap Up

This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by the Rev. Todd Pruitt.  Rev. Pruitt is a speaker on the Mortification of Spin podcast. A native of Houston, Texas, Todd served as youth pastor in churches in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Todd was called as the first pastor of Metro East Baptist Church in September of 1999. In November 2008, Todd became the teaching pastor of Church of the Saviour in Wayne, Pennsylvania.  Todd is currently the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, VA.  He is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Todd and his wife, Karen, have been married since 1990 and have three children: Kate, Ryan, and Matthew. Rev. Pruitt's church is home to the Blue Ridge Bible Conference to be held March 31- April 1 (Walk-in registration accepted!) and today Dr. Master will interview Rev. J. Gresham Machen and Biblical Authority Podcast

Dr. Carl Trueman (Ph.D., Aberdeen).  Dr. Trueman holds the Paul Woolley Chair of Church History and is professor of church history at Westminster Theological Seminary.
