#107 - Jeff Lieberman on Human Flourishing, Learning Quantum Mechanics before Emotions, Well-Being in Young Adults, & the Intersection of Science and Spirituality

Jeff received four degrees at MIT (Physics, Math, Mech E and Robotics). He hosted “Time Warp” on the Discovery Channel about the wonders of science, and made large-scale art for 15 years.   By external measures, he was incredibly successful. But inside, something was missing. This disconnect led him to a deep depression in high school, and chronic pain for almost 20 years after that.   Jeff learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions. He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don’t learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find.   He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being, facilitating high school students through a 3-week intensive and adults through an 18-month program. He speaks around the world on the topics of art, science, education, healing, and consciousness. See more of his work at bea.st.   Additionally, I’ll be donating to and raising awareness for the charity or organization of my guest’s choice with each episode now. #103 - Michael Koehler on Healing Historic Wounds & What It Means to Be a Leader Today

Michael partners with his clients to choreograph powerful leadership development programs. A former national champion in Rock ‘n’ Roll Acrobatic Dance, he is attuned to tensions between technique and creativity, between order and improvisation, and the critical importance of timing.   To help changemakers bring about the organizational and societal changes that they envision, Michael supports (and provokes) his clients to make leaps in their own development. Michael's experiential methods build from pedagogical training at the University of Marburg, where he obtained a Master's in Education, and at Georgetown University, where he obtained a Certificate in Leadership Coaching.   Michael has experienced first-hand the frustrations of generating change within multi-stakeholder systems. He founded bilingual K-12 charter schools and has a long list of his own leadership failures from attempting to generate changes in the German education system. He reflected deeply on these failures during his studies at Harvard for the Master's in Public Administration degree and zeroed in on the importance of leadership development in creating systems change.   He now has one focus: developing leadership. He co-teaches “Practicing Leadership Inside & Out” in the program “Doctor of Education Leadership” at Harvard Graduate School of Education, exploring the intersection between role, adult development, and systems change. He also founded the Adaptive Leadership Network to create holding environments for adaptive leaders and adaptive leadership educators to support and learn from one another.    As a gay man born into a Seventh Day Adventist family, Michael has explored ways in which identity shapes how leadership is exercised. He thinks often about distinctions between “role” and “self.” In Michael's case, this includes the questioning of assumptions he's developed as a first-generation university graduate from a post-industrial German town and as a first-generation immigrant to the US. #101 - Avi Greenberg on Breathwork, Near-Death Experiences, Finding Your Life Purpose, and Challenges of Being a Daddy

Avi’s Bio: Hi I’m Avi, a multidisciplinary Wellness Coach helping people create change through functional breath-work and contrast therapy.   With a diverse background working in Fashion, Tech, and Anti-Aging Medicine, one major turning point in my career was my education in Health and Wellness. At a time where I was at a mental and physical low point - overweight, depressed, and suffering from addiction, I found the Wim Hof Method and adopted it as a daily practice. I formed habits of morning breath-work, cold submersion, and sauna usage, all of which helped me with weight-loss, sleep quality, addiction, and overall restoration of energy.   In this newly formed path, I became a Certified Wim Hof Instructor in 2018. In addition, I’ve dedicated my time to learning other breath modalities such as The Art of Breath, The Oxygen Advantage, and taking courses with Brian Mackenzie and XPT. I am continually looking to gain more knowledge and provide genuine support and love to all who attend my workshops. I aim to create a safe, harmonious space for everyone I teach. Coaching athletes, entrepreneurs, yogis, and everyone in between, I too learn from everyone I train.   By utilizing stress as a method for growth, I’ve been able to accomplish more in my personal and professional life. My barometer for success is measured by helping others expand their comfort zone and develop better tools for dealing with stress. I propose that stress not be seen as a negative. By using stress to adapt, we become more resilient; creating a new pathway to healing and a deeper connection with our bodies. Through mindset-training and breath-work, I redefine the relationship with stress, ultimately this leads to a better understanding of oneself and how to thrive in our modern society. Additionally, I’ll be donating to and raising awareness for the charity or organization of my guest’s choice with each episode now. This episode, the organization is called Breathe for ALS. EPISODE #100!!! - Alan Trugman (Dad, Poppy, Best Pal) on Creating a Family Culture, Masculinity, & How to Raise a Child

Episode 100 of Mike’s Search for Meaning is in the house!!!! I could not think of a more special way to celebrate this milestone than to invite my father back on as a return guest.   As a father to a 3 month old, fatherhood and parenting is very top of mind for me. This conversation focuses on how my father was raised, how I was raised, the ways I look at parenting my son, childhood pains and how they inform our parenting styles, masculinity…a lot of the things!   We attended a men’s retreat together in May - 6 months ago - that transformed our relationship, and so we discussed what that experience was like; being in the woods together, no cell phones, for 48 consecutive hours, working through our stuff together.    Professionally, my father is a real estate agent, and you can connect with him at: https://trugmanteam.kw.com/. Additionally, I’ll be donating to and raising awareness for the charity or organization of my guest’s choice with each episode now.
