Managing Conflict with Confidence

In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we look at the challenges many of us face managing conflict in the workplace. Conflict management is a crucial skill but, sadly, most of us were not taught how to manage conflict in our homes or our schools, so we lack tools and confidence in this area. My guest, Kristine Scott, a conflict expert, shares a powerful perspective on how we can better manage ourselves in relationship to conflict, both at home and at work. She offers practical strategies for how to better understand and manage our fears and, in the process, grow our power and confidence.About My GuestIn 2008, Kristine took an AmeriCorps job running a meal program for unhoused young people. Almost 50 hungry youth arrived on Kristine’s first night. What happened next was terrifying for a young, small town white woman. Her purse went missing, there were fights and screaming guests. Kristine vowed to never return. But then something unexpected happened. A 17-year-old guest instantly turned the chaos into quiet, polite behavior with a single phrase. This began Kristine’s journey of learning from those she served, people living in constant threat and conflict. Through their mentoring and hundreds of incidents, she began to see conflict as a place to deepen a connection and counter social inequity. Kristine has since trained thousands of people how to respond not react, lean in and not lash out. She particularly enjoys working with women who are naturally skilled at de-escalation after they debunk the false narratives around gender roles. What’s the Risk of Not Speaking Up?

In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about the potential risks to ourselves and our organizations of giving into impostor syndrome. My guest, Dana Vogelmeier, who spent much of her career in the same company, shares her experience with impostor syndrome and how she came to manage it. We also discuss why it’s helpful to prioritize our purpose and values when experiencing self-doubt. About My Guest Dana Vogelmeier launched Vogelmeier Consulting in 2018 after working over 30 years for a Fortune 50 company. During her tenure she worked for more than 25 years leading diverse teams and working for different types of leaders with their own unique styles. She began examining the teams she led and the leaders she worked with to determine the differences. Some experiences were great, energizing, engaging, magical teams. Other times teams struggled to find harmony. Her work with employee engagement and her own success with leading teams, led to her being selected to improve the workplace atmosphere in one division where she improved the employee opinion scores by 30%. After this, she knew she wanted to help other companies and leaders create work environments people love. She wants everyone to work for a company that they can’t imagine leaving and to feel engaged and fulfilled at the end of the day. Where Is the Evidence?

In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we explore the ways in which feeling different from others makes us doubt ourselves and how it often pushes us to try to prove ourselves to those around us. My guest, Shirag Shemmassian, shares his personal journey of impostor syndrome as he grew up with Tourette Syndrome and worried that the opportunities presented to him were a function of his disability rather than his competence. Shirag and I explore the implications of this for others from historically marginalized groups, as well as strategies we can use to distinguish fact from the opinions and stories we tell ourselves that hold us back. About My GuestDr. Shirag Shemmassian is the Founder of Shemmassian Academic Consulting and one of the world's foremost experts on medical school admissions, college admissions, and graduate school admissions. For nearly 20 years, he and his team have helped thousands of students get into medical school and top colleges using his systematic and proprietary approach.While in high school, Dr. Shemmassian took a keen interest in the higher education process. He navigated the admissions process with limited college counseling and became the only Ivy League graduate in his high school’s nearly 60-year history. Specifically, Dr. Shemmassian received his B.S. in Human Development from Cornell University.
