Helfried Carl im Gespräch mit Fredrik LöjdquistHYBRIDE BEDROHUNGEN FÜR EUROPA IN DER RUSSLANDKRISE: SCHWEDISCHE SICHERHEITS- UND FRIEDENSPERSPEKTIVEN Die jüngste Aufdeckung pro-russischer Desinformationsnetzwerke in Österreich zeigt erneut die große Bandbreite von Bedrohungen unserer Sicherheit. Die Verschmelzung von hybriden und konventionellen Angriffsmethoden war noch nie so augenscheinlich und allgegenwärtig wie im russischen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine – und darüber hinaus. Umfangreiche Desinformationskampagnen mit Narrativen zur Beeinflussung der Gesellschaft und gezielte Cyberangriffe auf staatliche Infrastruktur oder nationale Institutionen bereiteten den konventionellen militärischen Angriff vor und begleiten das Kriegsgeschehen. Hybride Bedrohungen sind nicht nur ein außen- und sicherheitspolitisches Problem, sondern auch eines der inneren Sicherheit, die Grenze zwischen äußerer und innerer Sicherheit ist fließend geworden. She furthermore works as a media consultant specializing in political education, elections and digital rights. She has been instrumental in developing innovative reporting methods, including ethical journalism and the fight against fake news, to strengthen civil society in Palestine.

Robert Misik in conversation with Richard SennettTHE ART OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PERFORMANCE: ACTORS, DEMAGOGUES, SELF-PROMOTERS In his new book, world-famous sociologist and author Richard Sennett dissects the performer – in the German edition called „Der darstellende Mensch“. Sennett, who was a musician and artist before his extraordinary academic career, focuses on theatre and the emancipatory potential of art. But isn’t today’s dominant social character is also the performing human in a broader sense, curating his or her life, whether in social media or in the roles that he or she has to play? And doesn’t the show character of politics give rise to a certain type of politician? Sennett’s latest study also provides an opportunity to talk about the big picture of half a century of research. It has been 53 years since Sennett’s first legendary work, ‘The Hidden Injuries of Class’, was published, which reads as relevant today as ever – followed by ‘The Fall of the Public Man’, ‘The Corrosion of Character’, ‘On Craftsmanship’ and many other works, that deal with the interactions between individuals, identity and society. Taken together, they describe the transformation of the subjects through socialisation, as well as the alienation in neoliberalism, but at the same time they always open windows onto the utopian, onto a non-reified, communal existence.Richard Sennett grew up in the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago, attended the Julliard School in New York and then studied social relations at Harvard. Over the last five decades, he has written about social life in cities, changes in labour and social theory. His books include The Hidden Injuries of Class , The Fall of Public Man , The Corrosion of Character , The Culture of the New Capitalism , The Craftsman and Building and Dwelling . Sennett has advised the United Nations on urban issues for the past thirty years and currently serves as member of the UN Committee on Urban Initiatives. He is Visiting Professor of Urban Studies at Harvard. SOCIAL JUSTICE PAST AND PRESENTToday, we live in a time of a post-liberal challenge to social justice. Over much of the twentieth century, social justice has been closely associated with liberal democracy, with its claims included, in one way or another, in the political programmes of all democratic parties and movements. The expansion of social justice into the rhetoric of both the political right and left, however, has led to the universalization of social justice claims, and its promises have become an essential part of the ways in which illiberal movements and authoritarian regimes in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have constructed their legitimacy. What can this history teach us to face the challenges of today more effectively? Here, historians will discuss the modern evolution of concepts and practices of social justice in conversation with social scientists, engaging with questions such as: What have historically proven to be successful forms of collective mobilization around issues of social justice in both democracies and authoritarian regimes? Do individual appeals to social justice matter? What languages does social justice speak? How was social justice reimagined during the twentieth century? Does the debate and concept of social justice in the twentieth century differ from today?The talk and discussion occur on the occasion of the release of Social Justice in Twentieth-Century Europe (Cambridge U Press, 2024), edited by Martin Conway and Camilo Erlichman and written by an international team of leading historians. Cathrin Kahlweit im Gespräch mit Henning Homann, Vito Cecere und Eva KonzettBUNDESTAGSWAHL 2025: EINE ZÄSUR IN DER DEUTSCHEN POLITIKDie vorgezogenen Wahlen in Deutschland vom 23. Februar sind geschlagen. Der Bundestagswahlkampf 2025 war im Wesentlichen von den Themen Migration und Asyl geprägt gewesen – und kulminierte in einer hitzigen Debatte darüber, ob Union und FDP im Bundestag mit der in Teilen rechtsextremen AfD gemeinsam für eine Verschärfung der Zuwanderungspolitik hätten stimmen dürfen.Doch der Versuch, die AfD mit ihren eigenen Waffen zu schlagen, scheiterte: Die ausländerfeindliche Partei holte bundesweit knapp 21 Prozent, in allen fünf ostdeutschen Bundesländern wurde sie stärkste Kraft.Nun verhandeln Union und SPD über eine Koalition der Mitte, während die politischen Ränder, die AfD als größte Oppositionspartei und die unerwartet erfolgreiche Linkspartei, sich in der Ablehung einer fortgesetzten militärischen Unterstützung der Ukraine und eines höheren Wehretats einig sind. Fraglich ist daher, ob die Linke, die sich im Wahlkampf für die Brandmauer und gegen jegliche Kooperation mit den Rechtsextremen stark gemacht hatte, womöglich zentrale Projekte einer künftigen großen Koalition gemeinsam mit der AfD torpedieren könnte.Die politische Entwicklung in Deutschland und die Parallelen zu Österreich werfen mithin wichtige Fragen auf: Wie kann ein weiteres Erstarken Rechtspopulisten und Rechtsextremisten verhindert? Wie kann Donald Trump mit seinem antieuropäischen Disruptionskurs und Wladimir Putin mit seiner fortgesetzten Aggression die Stirn geboten werden? Und wie sollten sich Deutschland und seine Nachbarn angesichts der großen Herausforderung einer zerfallenden Weltordnung im europäischen Kontext positionieren? Henning Homann ist ein deutscher SPD-Politiker und seit 2025 Vorsitzender der SPD-Fraktion im Sächsischen Landtag. Zuvor war er Generalsekretär und Co-Vorsitzender der SPD Sachsen und seit 2009 ist er Landtagsabgeordneter. Vito Cecere ist der deutsche Botschafter in Wien und war mit den Themenschwerpunkten Strategische Planung, Kultur, Medien, Kommunikation und Wissenschaft für den SPD-Parteivorstand wie für das Bundesarbeitsministerium und das Außenministerium tätig. Eva Konzett  ist stellvertretende Chefredakteurin des Falter leitet dort das Politikressort. Cathrin Kahlweit, langjährige SZ-Korrespondentin, ist Publizistin und Moderatorin.

Robert Misik im Gespräch mit Simon SchauppSTOFFWECHSELPOLITIKEine ganz große Geschichte der Wechselwirkung von Produktion und Natur. Unser ganzes Leben, Arbeiten, Existieren ist eine Abfolge von Zerstörung und Aneignung und Verwandlung von Natur, und es reicht nicht, wenn man die Dinge nur zerlegt analysiert. Simon Schaupp denkt die Dinge zusammen und man geht, wie die „Zeit“ schrieb, aus dieser Lektüre als ein anderer heraus, als man hinein gegangen ist. „Fesselnd“ sei diese Untersuchung, schrieb die „Frankfurter Allgemeine“.Wenn wir die ökologische Krise verstehen wollen, müssen wir die Arbeitswelt verstehen, so der Autor. Es ist die Arbeit, durch die Gesellschaften ihren Stoffwechsel mit der Natur vollziehen. Arbeitspolitik ist daher für Simon Schaupp stets auch Umweltpolitik – oder »Stoffwechselpolitik«. Dabei spielt die Natur selbst eine aktive Rolle: Je weiter ihre Nutzbarmachung vorangetrieben wird, desto drastischer wirkt sie auf die Arbeitswelt zurück.Wie produktiv diese Perspektive ist, zeigt der Soziologe an einer Vielzahl historischer Beispiele: Ohne Moskitos sind weder Aufstieg noch Niedergang der Plantagenwirtschaft zu verstehen. Die Durchsetzung der Gewerkschaften wurde unter anderem durch die neuen Machthebel möglich, welche die materiellen Eigenschaften der Steinkohle den Beschäftigten an die Hand gaben. Und in frühen Schlachtfabriken setzten streikende Arbeiter die Unternehmer unter Druck, indem sie die eben eingeführten Fließbänder zum Stillstand brachten, so dass sich bald die verwesenden Tierkadaver stauten.Moderation: Robert Misik, Autor und JournalistSimon Schaupp ist Oberassistent am Lehrstuhl für Sozialstrukturanalyse. Tessa Szyszkowitz in conversation with Raja ShehadehHOW CAN PALESTINIANS AND ISRAELIS LIVE TOGETHER?"What Does Israel Fear from Palestine?" is one of the recent essay books by Palestinian author Raja Shehadeh. Drawing on his decades of experience as a human rights lawyer and chronicler of life under occupation, he reflects on the historical and legal dimensions of the Israeli Palestinian conflict and explores how fear has shaped Israeli policies towards Palestine.In his new book We Could Have Been Friends my Father and I, which was just published in German in February 2025, Shehadeh describes the conflict through the life of his father. Aziz Shehadeh was born in Jaffa and evicted in 1948. The family then lived in Ramallah, where Aziz saw new occupation in 1967 and where he was devoted to resisting Israeli occupation. As a lawyer he worked to implement a United Nations resolution for the return of Palestinian refugees and, in 1954, won a landmark case for the release of some of their assets. In 1984 he was assassinated.In his lecture and in conversation with Tessa Szyszkowitz Raja Shehadeh will discuss – also in memory of his father – what needs to be done to stop the bloodshed.Raja Shehadeh is one of the most important Palestinian writers of today. He is also a lawyer who founded the Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq. Shehadeh is the author of Strangers in the House: Coming of Age in Occupied Palestine;  Palestinian Walks: Forays into a Vanishing Landscape, which won the 2008 Orwell Prize. His latest book is We Could Have Been Friends My Father and I: A Palestinian Memoir has been shortlisted for the 2023 National Book Award for Nonfiction. He has written for The New Yorker, the New York Times, New York Review of Books, Granta, The Guardian, The Boston Review, and others.Tessa Szyszkowitz is an Austrian journalist and author (Echte Engländer, Britannien und Brexit, Picus, 2018). ROBERT MISIK IM GESPRÄCH MIT SAMIRA AKBARIANRECHT BRECHENGewaltfreier Widerstand, der Regeln und Gesetze bricht, ist eine große Erfolgsgeschichte. Das gilt in demokratischen Rechtsstaaten, in denen es spektakuläre symbolische Regelübertretungen schaffen, unterdrückte Themen auf die Tagesordnung zu bringen. Das gilt sogar in Diktaturen: Untersuchungen zeigen, dass von den „erfolgreichen“ und „teilweise erfolgreichen“ Kampagnen die strikt gewaltfreien viel öfter erfolgreich sind als die gewaltsamen. Weil durch den "David-gegen-Goliath“-Effekt die öffentliche Meinung sogar in Diktaturen häufig zugunsten der Protestierenden kippt. „Ziviler Ungehorsam“ in demokratischen Rechtsstaaten wiederum kann Themen in den Fokus rücken, die sonst ignoriert werden würden.Die 34jährige Frankfurter Juristin und Staatsrechtlerin Samira Akbarian hat sich nun dem Thema „Recht brechen“ in Demokratien angenommen, nicht weniger als „eine Theorie des zivilen Ungehorsams“ entworfen und dafür prompt mehrere Preise abgeräumt. In ihrer brillanten Untersuchung durchschreitet sie nicht nur historische Exempel wie die US-Bürgerrechtsbewegung, die Occupy-Bewegungen nach der Finanzkrise oder die Klima-Proteste, sie beleuchtet das Thema aus den verschiedenen Perspektiven: den juristischen, den diskurs-theoretischen, den moralphilosophischen Blickwinkeln. Doch was zeichnet zivilen Ungehorsam eigentlich aus? Recht zu brechen, so zeigt Samira Akbarian, kann gerade der Verwirklichung demokratischer Ideale dienen. Cathrin Kahlweit im Gespräch mit Franziska DaviesDIE UKRAINE UNTER DRUCKTRUMPS NEUE LINIE UND EUROPAS VERANTWORTUNG Seit 2014 herrscht Krieg in der Ukraine; in einer stetigen Eskalationsspirale, die in einer Vollinvasion im Februar 2022 kulminierte, hat Russland nicht nur das Territorium, sondern auch und vor allem die Staatlichkeit, die Identität und die Überlebensfähigkeit der souveränen Nation ins Visier genommen.Es dürfe, ja es könne keine Verhandlungen über einen Waffenstillstand und weitere Lösungsansätze in diesem russischen Angriffskrieg ohne Beteiligung Kyjiws geben – das war bislang der Konsens in der EU, aber auch in den USA gewesen. Bis zum Amtsantritt von Donald Trump. Derzeit jedoch sieht es so aus, als wolle sich Trump mit Wladimir Putin über das Schicksal der Ukraine verständigen – im Zweifel über die Interessen der Ukrainer hinweg. Wird es dazu kommen? Welche Optionen hat die Regierung in Kyyiv nun? Welche Schritte wird die EU  gehen müssen, um ihre Zusagen gegenüber der Ukraine zu halten und Putins Griff nach Westeuropa zu stoppen?
