It's More Boring When It's Not Fun! Copywriting Interview with Justin Blackman
Okay, if you thought an interview about copywriting would be boring, you are the opposite of correct.
This was the funnest interview I've conducted... ever. And all we did was talk about was writing words.
Join Justin Blackman from PrettyFlyCopy.com and I for an epic 40 minute conversation about writing, the power of words and how to bring more personality to your copy so you become more likeable, loveable and clickable.
We cover so much ground in this conversation, so pay attention and take notes.
Topics Covered in this Interview:
- How stand-up comedians structure their sentences and what you can learn from them to spice up your copywriting..
- Understanding the Word Economy and how you can write shorter, tighter and punchier sentences by saying more with less.
- "The highest point of listening comes after a laugh." - Kevin Rogers
- How to infuse your personality into your copy by being more fun... even if you don't consider yourself to be a fun person. (Memes & Gifs can help).
- How pop culture references can help bridge a connection point with your audience and therefore build greater trust and connection.
- The fine balance when using underlying tones to either sound more confident or like an authoritative SOB.
- The ever-so important secret to writing catchy headlines and email subject lines. This one tip is worth the listen!
- Justin's creative process for writing longform articles and newsletters. Where he starts and how he gets to the point.
"Instead of thinking outside the box, make your box smaller." - Justin Blackman
- Justin's TheHeadlineProject.com experiment, where he wrote 100 headlines every day for 100 days and what he learned about copywriting.
- Brand Ventriloquism: How he learned to analyze brand voices by writing for more than 300 entrepreneurs.
- Justin's WTF formula for finding your authentic voice when you write... and it's not what you think (words, tone, frequency).
- Crazy simple ways to sound more like your favorite entrepreneurs (no matter what industry you’re in).
- The three most powerful words in your copy... and one of them is not free. (Imagine, You and Because)
- A fun two person exercise to do before you start writing, to stimulate the left and right side of your brain.

TV Shows Make Pilot Episodes. You Should Make a Pilot Video Lesson Before Producing a Course.
Building courses is a lot of work and can take a long time... especially if you're doing a good job of it.
It may take you weeks, months, or possibly an entire year to produce the course you're envisioning in your mind.
As a way to test your course idea, theme and production-style, I encourage you to create a "Minimal Viable Video Lesson."
Think about this: TV Shows don't just produce an entire show and then launch it to the world. They first create a pilot episode to make sure their idea is a good one. Once they get the network & audience feedback needed (validation), they go on and produce the entire first season.
You should approach producing your course the same way. Create a "pilot lesson," before producing your entire course.
Don't get me wrong, just because it's a "Pilot Lesson" doesn't mean you should do a poor job producing it. No no... quite the opposite actually.
You should do a really good job and produce it at the quality and style that you'd imagine producing your entire course.
This is an opportunity to try out your crazy, creative ideas to see if they land home, if they're effective and if they'd be duplicatable when applying them to an entire course worth of video lessons.
Test your pilot lesson on your audience, on social media and anywhere else you can submit it. Get as much feedback as you can:
Are people liking it?
Are they asking for more?
Did you enjoy making it?
Do you want to create more?
Chances are, by the time you produce your Pilot Lesson, you'll have enough feedback and experience to know if this is something worth taking further.
The very worst case scenario is the feedback comes back poor, in which case you either choose not to go forward anymore, OR you refine & improve your approach.
Either way, you will save yourself hours, weeks, months and possibly a year of your life. Doing a "Pilot Leson" is worth the time and effort. So do it.
Do you have a pilot lesson produced? Share a link below. Or if this inspired you to make one, post it below when you're done! We'd love to see it.

Setting a Quality Control Bar for your Courses, Video & Memberships
With everyone and their cat launching a membership site and getting into the whole online learning thing these days, how do YOU intend to stand out?
One of the things that has helped us stand out over the years is the Quality Control Bar we set for ourselves with all of our courses, workbooks, online meditations, community posting guidelines and even the way I onboard new clients.
Questions:
Are you clear about your quality control bar?
Have you created posting guidelines and a clear protocol?
How do you ensure you maintain a professional, consistent look, feel and experience across the board?
Listen to this short lesson from our April 15th Majik Mind.
How often have you been on a website, in a membership or watching a video that was poorly put together and something about it made you feel on edge?
I get this all the time. If something is not designed well or produced professionally, I immediately get my bullshit detectors out and I lose trust, or at the very least, I lose interest...
The bottomline is, if you can create a beautiful & consistent look, feel and experience in your online community, courses or website, then you will minimize chaos, which on a deep, subconscious level will put your members or audience at ease.
If people are at ease, they will be more open & receptive to listening, more inspired to stick around and more trusting of what's coming out of your mouth. And ultimately, they will if they enjoy themselves while interacting with your creations, they'll be more likely tell their friends.

How to License your Courses & Content to Apps, Institutions and Companies
In 2012, I launched two different meditation courses as a way to retire myself from teaching 200+ meditation workshops per year. Those courses spread far and wide (something like 50-60+ countries) and I have been receiving ongoing passive income on them since the first day my first course went live...
Around 2014, I started seeking out alternative marketing paths to leverage my courses and generate even more passive income.
In this video, I share different strategies to license your courses and expertise to apps, companies or institutions who HAVE money & an audience.
The beautiful thing about going the licensing route is, you don't need to build a big email list or social media following to prosper and transform lives.
Instead, you might only need 1, 2 or a few licensing clients to generate the income and impact you desire.
Topics and Case Studies Covered In This Video:
- The difference between exclusive and non-exclusive licensing.
- How I licensed my meditations to several meditation apps and have increased my income every year. Last year alone, I made over $60,000 in licensing income and worked less than two hours on it.
- How I negotiated a custom meditation project for a company and got paid approx. $30K to do it, plus about $10K in annual renewal fees.
- How a client of mine pre-sold her course to a company before it was even launched, which covered her production costs and then some... and now she has the freedom to keep licensing her courses to more companies.
- How to license and host other people's courses in your network.
Note: This episode is like a mini-course in itself, so buckle up and prepare to go on an exciting ride with me... or hike in this case!
Disclaimer:
You can't license poorly produced courses and content. You have to put in the time and creative energy required to make magical educational content that sets you apart from everybody else in your field. Set your sites high, go the extra mile and become the go-to teacher in your field. These companies & apps need creators like you to stand up and make their job easier. They're waiting for you. But you're going to have to blow them away with the quality of your content.

Building a Membership that Feels like a Village. Moving Away from the Bigger is Better Mentality.
Join our all-inclusive Majik Media Membership at www.MajikMedia.com
Show Description:
Do you remember the show, "Cheers" that was on TV in the 1980's? (If you don't, continue reading, this reference will only take a moment...)
Remember when that loveable character, Norm walked into the bar every episode and all the people in the room would turn to him and yell, "NORM!" in unison?
Could you imagine how good it would feel if every time you walked into a room, everyone would turn and enthusiastically call out your name?!
Well, that is the essence and feeling I want for our Majik Media membership moving forward.
This three minute clip from our Making Majik Podcast explains...
I am more convinced than ever about the power and importance of Village Thinking.
More is not necessarily better, especially when it comes to community building.
Wouldn't it be amazing to login to a community or onto a mastermind call and have everybody know you, understand your business or project and be able to support you, cheer you on and encourage you when you're feeling discouraged?
I hope you will consider joining us inside of the Majik Media community at www.majikmedia.com
