When he was a junior in college, he started Personal Training and has since turned this into his career.

Why breathing is one of the most important things an athlete can do. It allows the central nervous system to enter a more optimal mode for training and performance.
The daily exercises they have clients perform to make sure the most important movements are practiced often and properly. This differs from person to person, depending on how they move and train.
The guys’ philosophy on training barefoot, and how it improves performance and helps the central nervous system. The connection with the ground is beneficial to tension control, creating proper movement patterns and can overcome a reliance on orthotics.
How Brandon and Greg tailor and customize their program, and evaluate clients over Skype, via online video, and in person at the gym.

107: Why Every Shot Counts when it comes to Strokes Gained with Mark Broadie
Today I am joined by author, educator, speaker, and golfer; Dr. Mark Broadie. Commonly known as the ‘Doctor of Golf’ Mark is at the forefront of a revolutionary new approach to the game. A professor at Columbia Business School, Mark helped the PGA Tour develop its cutting-edge strokes gained stat, and more recently worked with the PGA Tour on their implementation of strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach and strokes gained around the green. Broadie uses analytics from the financial world to uncover the secrets of the game of golf, with a focus on crunching mountains of data to show both professional and amateur golfers how to make better decisions on the course.
The strokes gained stat has been influential in changing the way we think about golf, and where we should be focusing. Putting and driving are often touted as being the most important aspects of a golfer’s game, but Mark’s work shows (convincingly) why most of the top golfers win with their approach.

Mark Broadie’s Background
Mark Broadie is the Carson Family Professor of Business at the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University.
He has received a B.S. from Cornell University and Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Mark helped the PGA Tour develop its cutting-edge ‘strokes gained’ putting stat.
Mark is the author of “Every Shot Counts: Using the Revolutionary Strokes Gained Approach to Improve Your Golf Performance and Strategy”
Highlights from this Episode
How Mark started applying the same analytics from his day job (business professor) to improve his golf game.
Debunking some common golf myths, like ‘drive for show, putt for dough’.
How Mark came up with the strokes gained stat, and why it’s so important to track. Mark also explains how it’s a more precise version of the intuition golfers have already been using for years.
The importance of the approach game. About 40% of the advantage top players have over lower ranked players comes from approach shots.
How anyone can use strokes gained and Mark’s app Golf Metrics to improve their game.
Why we shouldn’t credit Tiger Woods’ putting game as much his driving and approach game.
How Jordan Spieth is such a great player by simply being much better than average in every aspect of his game, rather than dominating just one.

This week I had the chance to sit down with Tom O’Toole Jr., fellow St. Louisan and the former president of the Unites Stages Golf Association (USGA).
As the head of an organization like the USGA, there are a lot of responsibilities and a lot of decisions that have to be made. In many cases, the decision will likely find some in favor, and some not. As Tom shares with us, it’s just part of the territory for any governing institution, and the USGA is no exception.
In this interview, we discuss not only the topic of rules and golf, but Tom’s journey from passing the rules exam to becoming the head of the USGA. The 25+ year journey is one that wasn’t quite anticipated, but one that he looks back on with awe and gratitude.

His involvement in the USGA event surprisingly lead him on a journey of helping to start the Metropolitan Golf Association and ultimately his involvement with over 150 USGA events and culminating in his presidency in 2014 and 2015. He also mentions a few of the people along the way that have inspired, mentored, and had a large impact on his career.
Tom sheds light on the volunteers/officials that are involved in the USGA and what that whole process entails.

103: How to train properly for more power and endurance with Mike Subach
This week, our guest is once again, Mike Subach. Just last week I received an email from a golf coach in Ohio with a great question (you can see a portion of the email below). I realize this can be a very difficult topic to navigate. So I called up one of the guys that I know is at the top of the food chain when it comes to conditioning, especially for golf, Mike Subach. You may have heard Mike on a recent episode or seen him in several videos for us here at 18STRONG.
In todays interview, I asked Mike how we can break some of this complex stuff down, so a 5th grader can understand it. He was definitely up for the task.

We do our best to break down why it’s so important for us to have a strong aerobic system/endurance level, and how that actually helps up become more effective with anaerobic activities (shorts bursts).
Mike breaks down what happens in the body when we only train for power and what the cost is of over training in this fashion.
We discuss why our CNS (Central Nervous System) is such an important factor in our training schedules and how it impacts our abilities to be effective in practice and subsequent training sessions.
Mike explains the 3 effects of overtraining:
Alarm response
Resistance-Plateau
Fatigue
We look at some of the main factors that we should pay attention to when designing our own training sessions or if designing programs for your team
Mike gives some guidelines and definitions of what he calls “developmental days” and “recovery days.” There are certain days when working on skills is not effective, and other things like low aerobics would be more effective.

102: Fix Your Body, Fix Your Swing with Joey D
I’m not sure there is a more recognizable face in the world of golf fitness than Joey D (his full last name is Diovisalvi, but we all know him as Coach “Joey D”). You’ve probably seen him on the golf channel, in Golf Digest, and depending on how long you’ve been a golf fan, you might even recognize him from his days on the bag (caddying, that is) with Vijay Singh, when we was on a winning train in the early 2000’s.

Along with his A-list of professional clients, Joey works with golfers of all ages on building a better golf body in his incredible facility in Jupiter Florida (I’ve included some pics below).
In this episode of the podcast, we talk about several different topics relating to making you a better golfer.
