#26 / Michael Lichens on ‘The Devil is afraid of me,’ The life of Fr. Amorth, the Vatican’s exorcist.
Joining us on the Spirit Box for episode 26 is Michael Lichens. Michael holds an MA in Religion and Literature from the University of Chicago and spends much of his time studying overlooked spiritual experiences when he isn't busy revising and editing. He is the editor of The Catholic Exchange and resides in Colorado where you can often find him discussing preachers, ghosts, and churches of the Old West.
We will be discussing the book “The Devil is Afraid of Me: The Life and Works of the World’s Most Popular Exorcist.” by angelologist Father Marcello Stanzione.
The book narrates the true story of Father Gabriele Amorth, the former chief exorcist of the vatican who performed more than sixty thousand exorcisms over a thirty-year period in Rome.
The book details the experiences Fr Amorth had during his career like the windows icing over during an exorcism in summertime in Rome, dealing the results of magical attacks and some startling manifestations including a possessed young man producing nails from his mouth. We compare elements of the accounts and techniques detailed with the Islamic equivalent and look at the reasons while individuals can be open to obsessions and possession and discuss the fate of fallen angels from both the catholic and fairy lore perspectives.

#24 / Joshua Cutchin & Timothy Renner on 'Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomenon'.
This week we are joined by Joshua Cutchin and Timothy Renner to discuss the book they co-authored, ‘Where the Footprints End’, an exploration into the high strangeness surrounding the bigfoot phenomena.
Joshua is an author and musician, and a well known figure in paranormal circles having appeared on some of the best known paranormal podcasts out there. Timothy is also a musician and author and on top of that he's a brilliant illustrator and host of the superb Strange familiars podcast.
So, what’s the premise of the book? Despite their apparently physical nature, bigfoot and its hairy hominid kin consistently appear mired in High Strangeness—the peculiar, ineffable, and nonsensical absurdities so often encountered in paranormal phenomena. Some sightings seem more consistent with mythology than biology. Bigfoot often present supernatural attributes, like luminescent eyes or the ability to pass, ghostlike, through structures. Anomalous lights are regularly seen in areas of frequent sasquatch activity. Footprints persistently, if rarely, display odd numbered toes, and—most bafflingly—bigfoot trackways suddenly terminate in the middle of open, untouched terrain.
In Volume 1 of Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomenon, authors Joshua Cutchin and Timothy Renner carefully examine not only the intersection of hairy apemen with global folklore—of poltergeists, faeries, extraterrestrials, magic, witches, ghosts, and archetypal women-in-white—but also question the fundamental assumptions underlying contemporary cryptozoological beliefs surrounding bigfoot.

#23 / Fr Dwight Longenecker on immortal combat, spiritual warfare & the invisible world.
As you know the point of this podcast is to look at all sides of the puzzle of non-physical non human intelligences, this week we’ll be looking at things from a Catholic perspective. To that end our next guest, Fr. Dwight Longenecker talks to the Catholic concept of Spiritual warfare detailed in his book Immortal Combat - Confronting the Heart of Darkness
Brought up as an Evangelical in the USA, Fr. Dwight Longenecker earned a degree in Speech and English before studying theology at Oxford University. He served as a minister in the Church of England, and in 1995 was received into the Catholic Church with his wife and family. The author of over twenty books and booklets on Catholic faith and culture, Fr Longenecker is also an award winning blogger, podcaster and journalist. He is pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Greenville, South Carolina.
Fr Longenecker maps out how Catholicism changed to a more ‘love and light’ position and in doing so lost its awareness of actual evil forces. We discuss the danger of pretending evil doesn’t exist and his personal experience with exorcisms. There are some sections I’ve bleeped out to remove names and location of those involved in the exorcism.

#19 / Morgan Daimler on 'The Good People', real Fairy experiences, fairy Lovers and possession.
Firstly, they are called 'The Good People' now that we've got that out of the way please welcome author Morgan Daimler.
Morgan has been a practicing witch since the 1990's and studying Irish folklore and mythology since the mid-90's. Growing up around the Irish-American diaspora contributed to this interest which came to include other Celtic language speaking cultures, such as Scottish and Welsh, and eventually the more loosely connected Norse, with a focus on folklore relating to fairies. Morgan began teaching and writing about fairies in the early 2000's and has presented workshops on related topics in the United States and Ireland as well as presenting as an independent scholar at the University of Ohio's 'Fairies and the Fantastic' conference in 2019.
I got huge amount out of this conversation, and I'm very grateful to Morgan for her openness and for sharing the wisdom and knowledge she's gained researching and engaging with this subject matter. It brought the phenomena of Jinn and 'The Good people' a lot closer for me. In fact it's really solidified what I already suspected in that this is a phenomena that communicates using the symbols that are culturally relevant to the witness.
We even had the classic technical problems when discussing how dangerous these entities are which is essentially a paranormal badge of honour and a clear indication that we were in the right territory.
If you have your own experiences be sure to leave them in the comments below or reach out to me.

#18 / Dana Fox - Scryptid: The Ultraterrestrial Word. Non-terrestrial writing, UFO's, Phantom Airships and Utsuro Bune
Dana Fox is a trainee Gestalt psychotherapist, a practicing Magickian most notably in visionary magic. He’s been drawn to the subject of UFO’s and the paranormal for as long as he can remember. In the this episode Dana talks about Non-terrestrial writing/communication. Things seen on the exterior and interior of witnessed alien craft; writing which has been the result of possession; and so-called automatic writing and channelled texts. Our use of written language sets humans apart from many of the other beings on earth. It is also apparent the we share this method of communication with the ultraterrestrial intelligences who come here still. As if that’s not enough we talk phantom airships, Kenneth Arnold, Black Triangles and Ghost rockets. Plus the incredible link he has made between Rendleshem forest and an incident in Utsuro Bune in 1830.
