Tesla charging network hold out Lucid motors says NO to TESLA NACS
The electric vehicle (EV) sector experienced a significant shift on Tuesday as Rivian, an American automaker specializing in electric pickup trucks and SUVs, confirmed its decision to adopt Tesla's proprietary charging standard. This watershed moment propels Rivian’s customers onto the largest EV charging network in the United States and augments Tesla's aspiration to establish a universally adopted industry standard.
Rivian, with its roots firmly planted in Illinois, projected that its patrons would enjoy access to a whopping 12,000 Tesla Superchargers sprinkled across the US and Canada starting in the spring of 2024. This compatibility would require adapters in the initial phase. Additionally, the automaker has planned a progression towards incorporating a Tesla-style charging port as standard on its vehicles by the year 2025, replacing its current proprietary technology.
Currently, Rivian operates a modest network of its own fast-charging stations. However, the allure of Tesla’s connector, touted for its compactness and extensive infrastructure, has led Rivian's leadership to this strategic pivot. "We see a golden opportunity to capitalize on the charging infrastructure that Tesla has painstakingly built," Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe, revealed in an interview with Reuters.
This alliance with Tesla forms part of a recent trend that has seen several automakers and charging infrastructure providers choosing to adopt Tesla's charging standard. On the same day as Rivian's announcement, BTC Power, a major player in EV charging solutions, declared its plan to integrate Tesla's standard into its portfolio. The government of Texas echoed this sentiment, mandating state-funded charging stations to incorporate Tesla's plug. At the same time, Korean automaker Hyundai Motor is contemplating a more significant alignment of its vehicles with Tesla’s standard.

Elon Musk's Legal Shake-Up Amid Dogecoin Insider Trading Accusations
Adam Gabor Mehes, a prominent figure among the ranks of Tesla’s in-house lawyers, has elected to make an exit. He has applied for permission to withdraw from counsel in a lawsuit involving Musk and an astronomical figure of $258 billion. This legal tussle revolves around allegations of market manipulation in relation to the digital currency, Dogecoin. A veteran lawyer based in Manhattan, Mehes's stint on Musk’s team spanned less than a year, during which he remained active across diverse legal disputes involving the tech entrepreneur.
Elon Musk has a reputation as a modern-day Midas. His ventures often turn into gold, including the electric vehicle giant Tesla and the aerospace manufacturer SpaceX. Yet, his golden touch may be under scrutiny in this lawsuit that accuses him of acting as a puppet master pulling the strings of the Dogecoin market.
Over the years, the irreverent Musk has gained notoriety for his provocative tweets that sway cryptocurrency markets. His affinity for Dogecoin, in particular, is no secret. The self-proclaimed "Dogefather" has sung its praises on Twitter and other platforms, leading some to allege foul play. The lawsuit accuses Musk of capitalizing on his towering social media presence to inflate Dogecoin's value artificially, particularly after his hosting gig on NBC's Saturday Night Live.

SpaceX Starship Launch: the Aftermath of the Launch Pad
In the early morning of April 20, 2023, an event occurred that transformed the quiet town of Port Isabel into the epicenter of a pivotal moment in space history. A behemoth, SpaceX’s Starship, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever flown, ignited the Texas sky on its maiden orbital test flight. The rocket, which broke a 50-year record held by the Soviet N1, was set to be a major milestone in SpaceX’s ambitious Starship development program.
The program follows an iterative and incremental approach, where learning from each launch - successful or otherwise - is key to the project’s evolution. Prior to the launch, SpaceX officials clarified that their measure of success was based on "how much we can learn," and that not all mission events were required to transpire for the test to be deemed successful.
The mission received acknowledgment from important public figures like NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and European Space Agency Director General Josef Aschbacher. Their congratulations signified the general perception that, despite the challenges faced, the launch played a significant role in propelling the Starship's development further.
The launch’s agenda was for the Starship spacecraft to complete nearly one orbit around Earth before reentering the atmosphere, culminating in a controlled landing in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The Super Heavy booster was planned to perform a similar landing in the Gulf of Mexico, around 20 miles off the Texas coast, roughly 8 minutes post-liftoff.
Liftoff was scheduled at 08:33 CDT from SpaceX’s private launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. However, the sequence of events did not quite follow the planned trajectory. Unexpected damage to the launch pad and surrounding infrastructure triggered alarm bells, leading to a ripple effect in the Boca Chica State Park as debris scattered into it. The vehicle managed to pass max q and enter supersonic flight, but technical issues with the engines led to a series of unfortunate events. Lack of thrust and thrust vector control prevented any attempt at stage separation. Starship started to tumble, leading to the activation of the autonomous flight termination system (AFTS). Although AFTS failed to destroy the vehicle, an explosion occurred 40 seconds later, ending the flight prematurely, nearly four minutes in.
But this isn’t where the Starship saga ends.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Full Self Driving Coming Very Soon
This is an episode from our upcoming Audio podcast, AI Update. https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/GTRSA5565433108
It was a crisp day in Paris, the city of light turned the stage for an electric revolution as Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the floor at the VivaTech conference. He stood against the backdrop of digital innovation and an audience eager for his next revelation. With a familiar air of optimism, Musk once again pushed the narrative of Tesla's imminent breakthrough into the realm of autonomy.
"Although I've said this before, I think we will solve autonomy soon," Musk declared, words echoing around the room, drawing the world's attention to a decade-long endeavour that has long fascinated the electric vehicle industry and beyond.
Indeed, Musk has time and again voiced Tesla's audacious mission in the realm of autonomy, catapulting the EV automaker's brand image to unprecedented heights. For the past decade, the mission of achieving a fully self-driving car has taken center stage in Tesla's vision, often leading Musk to assert confidently that the company is within touching distance of this groundbreaking feat.
Central to this endeavour are Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems. They symbolize Tesla's technological prowess, however, they fall short of the Holy Grail of full autonomy. They are not there yet, where the driver can blissfully snooze while the vehicle maneuvers itself flawlessly through traffic. Tesla describes its FSD Beta as an "SAE Level 2 driver support feature," a far cry from the SAE Level 5 status that would mark true autonomy.
At the heart of this relentless pursuit of autonomy, Musk emphasized, lies the primary driver behind Tesla's formidable market valuation. "The value of the company is primarily on the basis of autonomy. That's really, I think, the main driver of our value," Musk said. This has, in recent times, pushed Tesla's stock prices through the roof, adding more than $200 billion in market value.

SpaceX Timelines May Slip for Moon Mission
As the countdown for the planned return of astronauts to the moon through NASA's Artemis program runs down to December 2025, looming uncertainties with the development of SpaceX's colossal Starship rocket pose potential delays. This possible setback stems from ongoing "difficulties" in the development of the Starship, a vehicle intended to transport a duo of astronauts to and from the lunar surface.
NASA's Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate's leader, Jim Free, voiced his worries on Wednesday, hinting at a probable shift of the schedule into 2026. "The current timeline for the first astronaut moon landing under the Artemis program, termed Artemis 3, is set for December 2025," Free expounded during the National Academies’ Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board meeting. He further conveyed apprehension over the challenges faced by SpaceX, which might push the deadline further.
Before undertaking a lunar voyage, the Starship must first prove its capability for orbital travel. SpaceX's first attempt to test this involved an integrated flight of the Starship atop its 33-engine Super Heavy booster. This initiative, launched from SpaceX's Starbase facility in South Texas in April, transmitted essential performance data back to Earth. The company declared the test flight a success, despite the rocket spinning out of control due to multiple engine failures and eventually being destroyed by a self-activated destruction system.
