Episode 179: Dan John - Life Lessons from the Hotel Room

This episodes guest is with the man himself Dan John. Dan really needs no introduction. But here is a little background information, anyway: Dan John has spent his life with one foot in the world of lifting and throwing, and the other foot in academia. An All-American discus thrower, Dan has also competed at the highest levels of Olympic lifting, Highland Games and the Weight Pentathlon, an event in which he holds the American record. Dan spends his work life blending weekly workshops and lectures with full-time writing, and is also an online religious studies instructor for Columbia College of Missouri. As a Fulbright Scholar, he toured the Middle East exploring the foundations of religious education systems. Dan is also a Senior Lecturer for St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. His books, on weightlifting, include Intervention, Never Let Go, Mass Made Simple and Easy Strength, written with Pavel Tsatsouline as well as From Dad, To Grad. He and Josh Hillis co-authored “Fat Loss Happens on Monday.” In 2015, Dan wrote Can You Go? on his approach to assessments and basic training. In addition, Before We Go, another compilation akin to Never Let Go became an Amazon Bestseller. In early 2017, Dan’s book, Now What?, his approach to Performance and dealing with “life,” became a Bestseller on Amazon. Hardstyle Kettlebell Challenge became available in September 2017, too. Episode 172: Matt Van Dyke and Max Schmarzo - Isometrics for Performance

This episodes guests are Matt Van Dyke form Van Dyke Strength.com and Max Schmarzo from Stronger by Science Matt Van Dyke is the Associate Director of Applied Sports Science at the University of Texas. With the Longhorns, Matt is responsible for the complete oversight of the football team in regards to the management of training loads and recovery modalities implemented to each individual athlete in order to maximize performance and readiness. You can get his full Bio here. Max is the Director of Sport Science and Research at Resilience Code, Chief Science Officer of Exsurgo Technologies and founder of StrongbyScience. He has written two books, "Applied Principles of Optimal Power Development" and "Isometrics for Performance". On this episode the 3 of us discuss: Matt and Max's background and influences  We get into an indepth discussion around the guys book - Isometrics for Performance I ask the guys - how much of an influence was Frans Bosch's work was on their book I ask the guys to layout the different types of isometrics described in the book I ask the guys about how isometrics can be used to improve local metabolite buffering within a target muscle  I ask the guys about how they use isometrics with beginners The guys talk about how isometrics are a powerful means to increase tendon robutness I ask the guys - what do they think is the mechanism behind the performance benefits of long-duration isometrics?
