Episode 35: MBSE and AI with Alessandro Migliaccio and Giovanni Iannone

Broadcast date: May 15th, 2023, 19 CET  Since ChatGPT became popular, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic of discussion. However, AI has already been under discussion in systems engineering for quite some time. AI is a technology that has already made its way into several systems, and to design and deploy successful systems with AI, we need to have a common understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and peculiarities. Familiarity with AI is necessary for both engineering AI-enabled systems (SE4AI) and using AI tools to support our daily work (AI4SE). We have invited Alessandro Migliaccio and Giovanni Iannone to discuss this topic. They are the authors of the recently published book Systems Engineering Neural Networks by Wiley. You can join us live on the Youtube Livestream on May 15th, 2023, at 19:00 CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts. Episode 33 – Application of SysML v2 with Sandy Friedenthal

Broadcast date: April 3rd, 2023, 19 CET  After over 5 years of work with over 200 people from over 80 organizations, the OMG votes on the final submission of SysML v2 at the end of March. Truly a historic milestone for MBSE. We’ve talked about SysML v2 more often in our podcast, for example with one of the masterminds of SysML v2, Ed Seidewitz: SysML v2 – A look behind the scenes. This time we talk about SysML v2 with another mastermind: Sandy Friedenthal. Instead of looking behind the scenes, we will primarily focus on the application of SysML v2. How is SysML v2 different than SysML v1? What benefits does SysML v2 offer over SysML v1? What does the transition from SysML v1 to SysML v2 look like? Sandy is the world’s Mr. SysML. He has been one of the leaders and driving forces behind the language since the early days of SysML v1. We are very happy that he takes the time for us for an exchange. Episode 31 – Systems Thinking with Lydia Kaiser

Broadcast date: January 20th, 2023, 19 CET  Systems Thinking is an essential skill for system engineers. We talk about what Systems Thinking is and how to learn it in this episode. And we wouldn’t be an MBSE podcast if we didn’t also discuss what Systems Thinking has to do with MBSE. Our guest is Lydia Kaiser. She is a Professor of Digital Engineering 4.0 at Technische Universität Berlin and the Einstein Center Digital Future in Berlin. One of her topics is Systems Thinking. At the annual Systems Engineering Conference of the German INCOSE chapter in 2022, she introduced Systems Thinking to the attendees in her keynote and provided them with practical tips and homework. Episode 30 – SysML Interchange Options with Daniel Siegl

Broadcast date: December 13th, 2022, 19 CET  While in the early days of SysML, the exchange of models was mainly seen as a way to change modeling tools, today, there are a variety of use cases that fall under the buzzword Digital Thread. Together with our guest Daniel Siegl from LieberLieber we want to look at the different ways SysML models can be exchanged, both in theory and in practice. We will talk about the options with SysML v1 models and give an outlook on how it will look with SysML v2. You can join us live on the Youtube Livestream on December 13th, 2022, at 19:00 CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts. Episode 29 – MBSE and PLM with Erik Herzog

Broadcast date: November 23rd, 2022, 19 CET  If you compare the definition of the concept of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and the definition of SE (Systems Engineering) and MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering), you´ll find many commonalities. Both concepts claim a life-cycle view of a system or a product. The differences are more in generating and using models in contrast to the management of those models. The predecessor concepts of PLM – PDM, EDM, etc. – were there to manage drawings and models in mechanical engineering in the form of documents. Documents again raise a bell when we look back into the history of SE. We talk to Erik Herzog about how these topics comply, how they can benefit from each other, and what a tool landscape may look like. Luckily also, Christian can provide some insights, as his employer is a PLM vendor. You can join us live on the Youtube Livestream on November 23rd, 2022, at 19:00 CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts. Episode 26 – INCOSE Vision 2035 with Paul Schreinemakers

Broadcast date: August 17th, 2022, 19 CET  At regular intervals, INCOSE publishes a vision that describes how the discipline of Systems Engineering and its changing context is seen in the future. The vision is thus an inspiration and guidance for strategic orientation. In early 2022, INCOSE published its new vision for the year 2035. Our guest Paul Schreinemakers was a member of the team that developed the vision and, as such responsible for gathering and evaluating the review comments from a wide variety of reviewers. We talk with Paul in general about the 2035 vision to get a good overview, and as a focus, we’ll talk about how the Vision sees MBSE in the future. In the past INCOSE Vision for 2020, it was said about MBSE “In many respects, the future of systems engineering can be said to be “model-based.” And in the INCOSE Vision 2025: “Model-based systems engineering will become the “norm” for systems engineering.” You can join us live on the Youtube Livestream on August 17th, 2022, at 19:00 CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts.   Link to the Systems Engineering Vision 2035: http://sevisionweb.incose.org/ Der Beitrag Episode 26 – INCOSE Vision 2035 with Paul Schreinemakers erschien zuerst auf The MBSE Podcast.

Episode 25 – SysML v2: A look behind the scenes with Ed Seidewitz

Broadcast date: June 6th, 2022, 19 CET  SysML v2 is finally in the last stretch to completion. The SST team has worked on this next-generation modeling language since 2017. We already covered the SysML v1 to SysML v2 migration in our last episode. This time, we will look behind the scenes of SysML v2. Our guest is one of the masterminds of SysML v2: Ed Seidewitz. Ed is also the CTO of Model Driven Solutions. We will talk about the development of SysML v2 in general and highlight some specific topics.   How do you develop a modeling language, including its abstract syntax, concrete syntax, and semantics? We will talk to Ed about how the SST team is tackling this big task. One of the biggest changes in SysML v2 is in the background. SysML v2 is no longer based on UML. What does this mean, not only for users but also for tool vendors? Speaking of tools, the SST team also provides a pilot implementation. Ed is one of the key developers, and we will ask him about that, too.  You can join us live on the Youtube Livestream on June 6th, 2022, at 19:00 CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts.   Der Beitrag Episode 25 – SysML v2: A look behind the scenes with Ed Seidewitz erschien zuerst auf The MBSE Podcast.
