Jake & Gino: Real Estate Investing & Multifamily

Welcome to the Multi-FAMILY zone podcast, where business meets family. The hosts of the show, Julia and Gino Barbaro, have been married for over twenty years, and have six children.   Julia homeschools the children, and recently became a marriage and life coach to help couples become better communicators and help enrich their lives.  The couple is constantly asked about how they balance their entrepreneurial & real estate journey while raising their kids. The Multi-FAMILY zone was created to address these questions, along with a host of questions from the Jake & Gino community.   In their first episode, they tackle the Spousal Stink Eye.  The annoyed look a spouse receives when he or she picks up the phone during family time.  We discuss how to confront and discuss the Stink Eye openly, and how to communicate with your spouse about whether or not you need to pick up the phone. The couple also discusses how to create boundaries, and how to share quality time together.   These are some of the questions that we answered on the show:   What systems do you have in place to make sure you communicate effectively and avoid “talking shop” during family time? How do you encourage appreciation of each other and avoid comparing the time and effort you each contribute? What boundaries do you have in place regarding your business life and family life? How do you navigate differences in priorities and expectations for how you run your business without making it personal? What have you done to avoid a spousal relationship that feels more like employer/employee or coworkers? Do you have suggestions on how we can open up the communication so that both spouses can be on the same page? Courtney and Julie are real estate investors in Nashville TN. Courtney has a background in residential real estate and Julie graduated with an interior design degree. Together they have spent the past year flipping houses, house hacking and purchasing “buy & hold” properties. They began in the single family space, but quickly realized it would take entirely too long for them to meet their financial goals. Thus sprung the need to dive head first into the multi family space. Currently they own a duplex, two triplexes and are looking to take down a 35 unit property by the end of the year. Eli Sunderland is the founder of The Sunderland Group. He grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis and graduated in 2016 with a degree in mathematics and economics from Bethel University. After graduation, Eli worked as an actuarial analyst at a large insurance company in Minneapolis. At the age of 24, he stepped aside from a career as an actuary to create a multifamily investment firm. With his technical background, Eli specializes in deal analysis and asset management. Since getting started, he has closed on a 62 unit apartment complex in Johnson City, TN, a 41 unit deal in Chattanooga, TN, and is closing on another 107 units in Louisville, KY in June, resulting in a total of 210 units and over $10M in assets under management in less than 12 months. Harper is a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a major in Finance. He has been in real estate for the past 3 years, starting in wholesaling/flipping and recently venturing into the multi-family space. To date, Harper has flipped 50+ properties since Fall of 2016. Harper chose the route of multi-family for the long-term wealth and tax benefits it offers.
