276: Building Intergenerational Support To Move You Forward Fast

We are joined today by Hope Paterson, a global nomad, mother of two, education innovation specialist, and transformation coach. For two decades, Hope has been developing what she calls the Hope triangle: electrifying pathways for humans of all ages working at the intersection of education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. As a coach Hope is steadfast and supportive, walking alongside others as they move from old to new. She is also the founder of Hope Braintrust, a global think tank that hosts live events and collaborations. Her growing online network, the Hope Sparks Network, is a vibrant intergenerational community where people of all ages can connect to share their knowledge and experience. In today's conversation with Hope, we learn how to embrace more bravery in our lives before delving into the concept of finding intergenerational allies. She shares how she first learned to flex her bravery muscles as a young girl, how her many years as an entrepreneur helped her build a network of brilliant individuals from across the world, and why she was determined to be the hopeful glue that brought them together. Hope also gives listeners her advice on how to put together and run an intergenerational advisory board, the type of individuals who are typically drawn to these communities, and why listening to your community members is essential. Join us today as we engage in a thought-provoking discussion on the power of global, intergenerational connections and the vital role these collectives play in growth, change, and transformation! How can I be the bridge? How can I be the translator, the hopeful glue?'" — @Hopescott [0:18:29] "I always start my events out saying 'This is a non-corporate loving space for you to explore what's possible.'" — @Hopescott [0:21:28] "Speak to kind, gentle people to begin with, because it might be a bit awkward and clunky. And then you can move out to the bold connections that might be harder to reach." — @Hopescott [0:33:29] "By asking them, [and] by listening, I get to focus more on what they really want, and less on what I think they want." — @Hopescott [0:36:14] Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 275: Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You

Fatimah Gilliam is an author, lawyer, sought-after speaker, consultant, and founder of The Azara Group, a consulting firm that provides diversity and inclusion, leadership development, negotiation, and strategy consulting services to Fortune 500 corporations, senior executives leading billion-dollar businesses, and industry thought leaders. Her groundbreaking book, Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You, is a practical manual of the unwritten rules that can help readers navigate today's racially polarized world. In short, it's a 'how-to' manual for white people to be less racially offensive; enabling them to develop stronger and more respectful cross-racial friendships and professional relationships with people of color. Today, Fatimah joins us as "white America's Black friend" to tell us what others won't say to our faces nor share about perspectives of color on white behaviors, choices, and interactions. She shares deep, transformative insights from her book, which seeks to open the door to perspectives of color so white people can learn, make better choices, take different actions, and evolve with a diversifying society in the 21st century. This conversation is an excellent source of well-informed and hard-hitting advice for those looking to move beyond performative allyship and live their non-racist values, rather than just talk about them. As we discuss, this is ideal for anyone who wants to bring the unconscious forward to consciousness, so they can take new actions every day that will directly and powerfully address and combat racism both in our own lives and behaviors, and in the world we live in. Tune in to learn more! Key Highlights From This Episode: • What inspired Fatimah to write this book and what her intentions are for it. [04:31] • Ways that being a light-skinned Black woman has impacted her view of racism. [07:57] • Defining racism and why Fatimah chooses to focus on impact rather than intent. [09:53] • The 'how-to' guide she offers and how Race Rules differs from other books on racism. [13:37] • How racism is distinct from prejudice with the key ingredient being power. [18:42] • Fatimah's "Top 5" of 31 race rules and insight into her three-step Bedrock Race Rule. [20:15] • Othering, marginalization, and how to ensure the language you use isn't offensive and harmful. [28:00] • Rules for discussing race for white people who see themselves as anti-racist allies. [33:59] • Understanding the relationship between defensiveness and exceptionalism. [41:14] • A favorite passage of Fatimah's from Race Rules, where to get the book, parting advice, and more. 274: How Playing Competitive Sports Supports Women's Leadership Success

It's been proven that playing competitive sports continues to contribute significantly to the success and leadership growth that women experience in later life and in their careers. Joining me to share her first-hand insights and key observations from her own career and from recent important research on this topic, is Lara Abrash, Chair of Deloitte US, the largest professional services organization in the United States. Lara shares her own experiences of playing softball, baseball, and tennis, revealing the essential skills she learned along the way. 273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Note: This is a special airing of a "holiday favorite selection" and is a repeat of our Finding Brave holiday episode #208. "You just have to believe that there's a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it's amazing what happens in your life." – Kathy Caprino As we approach the end of another year, once again I'm happy to share this special "Holiday Selection," featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2024 with even more bravery, inspiration, and motivation to pursue and achieve your most important and meaningful goals. Today, I'm excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection — the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful, and probing way, exploring all that you've learned and experienced, created, and also "failed" at. (Note: I don't perceive "failure" the way many others do. I view it as a vital learning" opportunity — as an effective experience that, when viewed from a positive framework, helps us get much clearer on who we are, what we need to thrive, and what we really want in our lives. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, deep way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you've been living "off course" – far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In this episode, I explore what I've found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future. As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that's happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it. At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy it! I'd love to hear how your answering these six questions impacts you and what it reveals. And I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you're interested in hearing from. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas! I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year and I'm looking forward to connecting with you and serving up fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2024 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be. Happy New Year! Highlights from this Episode: The benefits of reflection and what it can help you achieve these next 12 months [5:27] What our lives are giving us, but we often miss [08:58] Why you need to celebrate all of your wins, no matter how small you may think they are [10:30] What I tell myself when things don't seem to be working out for me and how we can reframe our experiences to benefit from them [14:31] Why focusing on desired "outcomes" can be more helpful and instructive than "goals" and how turning your "mess into a message" can give you great clarity on what to do next [15:13] Don't agonize and overly attach to the specific "how's" - just start moving forward any way you can [17:08] Visualization truly works – here's an exercise that I do [19:24] What is your "higher self" and how you can receive help from it [22:29] What is one thing that is needed to overcome your resistance [26:37] The reasons that accountability is needed and where we can get it [28:05] The power gaps that keep people from thriving in their lives and in their work [29:30] How you can move past a traumatic event and finally let it go [34:48] My theme word for the year and an invitation for you to create one as well [35:26] A little song for you to welcome in the New Year [37:15] For More Information: kathy@kathycaprino.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathycaprino/ https://www.facebook.com/ElliaCommunications/ https://twitter.com/kathycaprino https://instagram.com/kathycaprino Resources mentioned in this episode: Episode 50: How To Reduce Pain and Conflict With Family and Friends This Holiday Amazing Career Project Module – The Lessons Life is Trying to Teach You and Why You're Not Learning them Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life by Shakti Gawain Breakdown, Breakthrough: The Professional Woman's Guide to Claiming a Life of Passion, Power and Purpose Finding Brave Episode 46: 7 Damaging Power Gaps That Keep You From Thriving in Life and Work Kathy's Forbes post on How To Stop Staying 'I'm Sorry' When You're Not (And Why You Need To) Other episodes for the holiday season: #186 with Joseph Grenny - How to Have Those Difficult But Crucial Conversations with Friends and Colleagues #195 – with Dr. Fred Luskin - How to Forgive Someone When You Feel You Can't #271 - with David Jurasek - How to Recognize and Release the Damaging Shame You Hold Other Resources For You: CHECK OUT: Kathy's digital 12-issue newsletter bundle "Your Path To Career Bliss" Dive into learning about the 12 essential topics that will help you experience greater success, joy, and reward in life and work, with materials from some of the nation's top experts! Thank you! * * * * * * FINALLY, PLEASE ASK YOUR ORGANIZATION TO BRING THE MOST POWERFUL YOU TRAINING TO YOUR WORKFORCE TODAY Is your organization committed to supporting the growth and success of both women and men in your workforce? If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face? I'm so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations has sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects. Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are often NOT effective because they simply don't go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying "STOP!" to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to. _______________ Need some great podcast production support? What's the label?" — David Jurasek [0:14:28] "It's really hard to identify it and notice [shame] because it's so internal. It's who you think you are. You don't know your soul. But when you look deep, deep, deep down, you meet your shame. And your shame tries to tell you, this is who you are, trust me." — David Jurasek [0:18:34] "To un-shame, is to start to name it. And I think often in intimate relationships, it's so easy to project our shame on our partner on our kids." — David Jurasek [0:34:24] "It's confronting that voice inside and saying, 'Whoa, when did I make you the authority of my life? It must have been when I was a child, because I'm a 46-year-old adult now. You better sit the fuck down.'" — David Jurasek [0:38:48] "We need support because that shame is so sticky. It's like black tar, gunky stuff, it hides and it sticks." — David Jurasek [0:44:20] "I'm breaking the chains of the past. I'm healing society by releasing shame from my nervous system. So I don't recreate it. And I don't add to it and don't put it on other people. I think it's the most important thing we could ever do." — David Jurasek [0:45:04] Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! In a society that constantly pushes us to do more, achieve more, and be more, how do we ensure that we're not running on empty, or worse - experiencing debilitating physical, emotional and mental symptoms of stress? Joining us today to help unpack this complex topic is Dr. Neha Sangwan, who went from working on the frontlines of healthcare as a hospital emergency room physician, to becoming a key voice on burnout as an entrepreneur, author, and speaker. Her transformative new book Powered by Me: From Burned Out to Fully Charged at Work and in Life, was inspired by her own experiences as a young hospital physician when circumstances forced her to navigate the difficulties of extreme burnout. She is also the founder and CEO of Intuitive Intelligence Inc., where she combines the science of medicine with the art of communication to transform workplace cultures. That's why as a society, as a community, as those we love and lead, we really need to be able to say something. We need to say, are you okay?" — @doctorneha [0:11:13] "Burnout is a very complicated issue. – I would call it our own global epidemic that's going on. But I think when people think about it, they simplify it and then they don't understand why that's not the complete picture." — @doctorneha [0:19:30] "I felt like a complete and utter failure. Why are all my colleagues – handling it? They're still working. How can I be the one that isn't? – I think it was a bit of pride, I think it was a bit of shock. I think it was a paradigm I had never even entertained, thought of, or imagined." — @doctorneha [0:25:57] "Everything we're doing is about speeding up the external world. And I think that we have simultaneously tuned out of our own internal system." — @doctorneha [0:42:05] "What if it's not profit over people? And all these things we're taught about success aren't actually true. What if it's people? Everybody matters, and everybody wins. What if investing in your people, is how you make a greater profit?" — @doctorneha [0:44:00] Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 267: Why Consent Is a Must for Connection and Respect in Life and Work

Relationship expert, trainer, speaker, and author Dr. Eric FitzMedrud uses his wide-ranging expertise to teach men how to hone their consent skills for stronger relationships and hotter sex, and also has witnessed how consent enhances connection, reward, respect and fulfillment in work and organizational settings as well. As a therapist committed to helping people live more meaningful, connected lives, Eric wrote the book The Better Man: A Guide to Consent, Stronger Relationships, and Hotter Sex to offer much-needed tools for instruction, healing, and growth. As you'll discover in this episode, these tools can assist us in nearly all aspects of our lives. Today on Finding Brave, Eric paints a clearer picture of consent-driven leadership, highlights some of the systemic barriers that hinder the creation and growth of a consent culture at work, and delves into the emotional responses that often make the word "no" so difficult to hear and accept and what to do to shift that. We also touch on the important role of curiosity, open dialogue, vulnerability, and more. For a broader view of consent and how it can help you build deeper connections and mutual respect in life and work, be sure to tune in today! Key Highlights From This Episode: • How toxic masculinity negatively impacts men, not just women and others. [03:55] • What consent is and why many of us lack the skills to communicate our needs. [08:10] • The biggest problems that men have with consent in their intimate relationships. [14:29] • Why receiving a "no" can be so difficult to deal with, the role of curiosity, and how to empower yourself using the things within your control. [17:00] • The importance of (re)examining unconscious assumptions in relationship contracts. [24:11] • How to ask better questions and encourage participation in consent conversations at home and at work. [30:40] • A look at what consent-based leadership looks like and why open dialogue is crucial. [35:52] • An invitation to add to and share your takeaways from this conversation with us!
