180: How Hormones Impact Your Immune System + Skin Health w/ Heather Zwickey, PhD
Did you know that your hormones and immune system have a complex relationship? This relationship can impact how often we get sick, why women are more prone to autoimmune conditions than men, why more and more people have environmental allergies, and why we develop skin rashes. 179: The Best Diet To Fix Your Skin Rashes
Have you ever wondered what is the best diet to fix your skin rashes? There’s sooo many suggestions out there -- which to choose? Most people cycle through so many diet variations without much lasting success leaving them frustrated and feeling like a failure. And for many, the joy that food and mealtime used to have disappears. You also begin to draw conclusions about how certain foods trigger your skin that might not be entirely accurate… ultimately placing too much blame on food. As your diet becomes increasingly limited, other problems can pop up -- all on the quest to simply fix your skin. I’d like to help you avoid these pitfalls and better understand what role diet can play. I have a sneaking suspicion that you have been misled to believe that diet alone should be more helpful than it really is. I invite you to keep an open-mind and join me as I share some valuable insights that I’ve gain from working directly on cases in my practice. In this episode: Can diet changes alone fix chronic skin rashes? (my controversial opinion) Recent client story using an elimination diet approach Is there ONE diet that can really fix your rashes? Do elimination diets cause more harm than good for skin problems? What you should keep in mind when using diet as a tool on your journey Quotes: The overuse of elimination diets is incredibly troubling because it pits you against food which is, above all, nourishment. Real-life consequences of overly relying on elimination diets have now created a trend of disordered eating and food fear that is alarming and harmful.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

178: Using Probiotics For Eczema in Little Ones w/ Jennifer Brand, MS, MPH, CNS
We've talked a lot on the show about how gut health plays a role in the health of the skin. But is this the case in children as well? My guest today will explain all about the skin-gut connection, specifically in little ones. My guest today, Jennifer Brand, MPH, MS, CNS is an integrative and clinical nutritionist and the founder of Jennifer Caryn Brand Nutrition. She specializes in childhood skin rashes (eczema in particular), food allergies and sensitivities, and gut problems. She's is a faculty member of LearnSkin, and her work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations. Join us as we discuss the use of probiotics in children as a tool to help combat eczema. Have probiotics helped your child's skin condition? Let me know in the comments! 177: Liver Detox - Skin Rash Connection, Part 1
I’m often asked so many questions about liver detoxification. You can find so many different people promoting liver detoxes as “the way” to help rashes. My approach (as you probably know) differs greatly. Partly due to my own personal experience living with hand eczema and also from working directly with clients. I generally do not ever recommend liver detoxes or cleanses. And for some who have a histamine problem or have allergies to pollen — I recommend you steer clear! In this episode, I’m going to break down the different phases of liver detoxification so that you can understand my perspective. Yes, it’s complicated and I have tried not to get too nerdy on this (because biochemistry can be confusing). Join me as we dive headfirst into the liver detox-skin rash connection! In this episode: 3 phases of liver detoxification Distinct role of each phase of liver detox How nutrients play a role in liver detoxification Problem with using herbs to “detox your liver” Ways that your liver detox system can become overwhelmed Quotes: Phase 2 detox handles the burden from Phase 1 AND everything that doesn’t need to go through Phase 1. Liver detoxes that include herbs generally speed up Phase 1 detox resulting in a lot of more toxic byproducts.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

Quotes “I really think there is something to this concept that people who are heavily colonized, if that's how we want to call it, it's not just a benign bystander. 175: Top 3 Mindset Shifts On Your Skin Journey For 2021
Have you heard the phrase “Whether you think you can or think you can’t — you’re right” from Henry Ford? There’s so much truth to this statement and it is critical on your skin rash journey. I’ve spoken with so many people over the last three years who have shared with me some of their greatest fears about their skin problems. And what I’ve found is that those who believe that they’ve exhausted all hope and have tried everything and are ready to give up trying… are right about their predicament. It’s not about what they have or haven’t done — it’s more about what they believe about their situation. This is significant because if you don’t believe there is hope, you’ll be the first to bail at the slightest of speedbumps or setbacks. So while we can talk about the importance of various supplements or protocols, mindset is JUST as important… and sometimes even more so. That’s why I wanted to add in more mindset focused episodes to help you stay the course and see your skin (and situation) in a different light. All with the purpose to keep you moving forward so that you can reach your finishline. I believe in you… and I want to give you the tools to help you get there. In this episode: The power of your mindset to dictate whether you can make it through flares + setbacks (or throw in the towel) Unrealistic expectations of solutions shared online (AND why they might not work for you) Knowing your root causes is just the first step in the process Thoughts on taking lots of random supplements that might help your skin My beef with “healing your leaky gut” + why most people never actually do it Quotes: It’s not your fault that someone else’s solution didn’t work for you. It didn’t work because their root cause combo is different than yours. All the bone broth and glutamine in the world isn’t going to fix your leaky gut if you’ve still got a super messed up microbiome.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

174: When Topical Steroid Withdrawal Gets Complicated
The topic of topical steroids is a tricky one… very controversial these days for some who’ve discovered that their body has become addicted. As you know, I’ve covered Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) in multiple episodes of the Healthy Skin Show. Today’s episode is a focused on my own personal insight as a clinical nutritionist directed specifically to support those who find themselves in TSW. There are some common assumptions that float through the TSW community that I’ve found to be unfortunately concerning. These assumptions have at times ended up creating an even worse state of health for a client because the advice they were given was not appropriate for them (and at times, inaccurate). While I realize that TSW is not an official medical diagnosis leaving people to essentially self-diagnose, there is a greater risk of misstep because of the complexities not just of the human body, but also because of the lack of medical support. Advocates do and share what they can, but there can be significant gaps in knowledge that many of us who work with individuals in this community are hoping to fill with new research and clinical experience. I’d like to help you avoid some pitfalls that I commonly see by sharing some pearls from my clinical practice where I work with TSW clients in addition to my ongoing research. The intention is to offer a perspective that could open up new avenues for you of working on your skin and ultimately your health. In this episode: Elimination diets + Topical Steroid Withdrawal Nutrient deficiencies in clients with TSW Could something else be making your TSW experience WORSE? Hidden reasons driving intense itchiness associated with TSW Staph infections + Topical Steroid Withdrawal Quotes: Clients with TSW tend to have a crazy amount of nutrient depletions that can be very challenging to correct. Extreme itchiness typical of TSW could be from other issues like a hidden gut infection (like H.pylori or Blastocystisis homonis), mold exposure or zinc deficiency.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com
