Why does it seem like the closer people get to God, the less grace they extend to others? Sometimes the most spiritual people extend the least amount of grace. Gratefulness can feel like a checklist of things we’re happy to have (or we’re supposed to be happy to have). But choosing to be grateful and see the effect of Jesus in our lives is actually a choice - usually a hard one - that we have to practice making. Gratitude helps us to see what IS instead of what isn’t. Trust is complicated because you may trust someone to do one thing, but not another. When our trust is broken, we often carry that distrust into other relationships. Loving people is hard for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s different love languages, sometimes it’s because we don’t know how to receive love ourselves, sometimes it’s just because…people. Jesus said to love our neighbors as ourselves but it seems to have been misinterpreted to love the neighbors who are like ourselves. People often go to church or turn to God because they want a blessing. But what Jesus really calls us to as the church is to be a blessing to other people. Not only does God answer our prayers, but He allows us to be an answer to prayers. Everyone has some kind of talent but relying on capacity to perform is a life lived in the privilege of what we can do. It limits us to be just who we are, who we’ve been told we are and what comes naturally. What God calls us to is growth, which requires effort and persistence.
