You are the answer to someone’s prayer. This world is full of messy people, people who have been mistreated, overlooked and called unholy. But Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 to teach us not to cross the street or look away when we cross paths with these people. Instead, we are called to lean in and see their pain, to be the ones who can speak hope into their situation. What do you do when a relationship doesn’t work out? When other people’s choices leave you alone and lonely again, does God even care? Where is God in the midst of your heartbreak when the chances of life deal you divorce, death, betrayal, abandonment or addiction? A lot of people are leaving the church and this pastor knows why. The Bible has been used to control, shame and justify a lot of things. It can leave you feeling disappointed in unfulfilled promises or confused about what God really means. But scripture was never meant to be read literally or taken apart verse by verse to proof text or prove a point. God may not be who you think he is. He isn’t waiting to catch you doing something wrong so he can punish you. He doesn’t use guilt and shame to control your behavior. He isn’t even solely concerned with your morality and goodness. If any of those sound untrue to you, it may be time for you to quit on your version of God. In this message, Jesus uses 3 parables in Luke 15 (the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son) to show us who God really is. You’ll also learn the difference between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament and why it matters where you start reading the Bible.
