Stories with Heart: Jessi Hempel of LinkedIn and Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel
Jessi Hempel always knew she wanted to be a writer. From the time she won her grade school writing contest, she knew she was destined to share her gift of the written word. It was a surprise, then, when her success as a tech writer for such magazines as Fortune and Wired ceased to feel as fulfilling as it once had.
Many people reach this point in their careers; the excitement ebbs, the shine wears off. Few people take the leap and try something new. Jessi, however, did just that. Spurred by personal hardship, she seized the opportunity to dive into the unknown, striking forth in a new direction with the knowledge that she could never again pursue work that didn’t resonate with the deepest levels of her heart.
Ever the storyteller, she is now the host of Webby nominated podcast Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel, in addition to working as senior news editor at large at LinkedIn.

Be Your Biggest Advocate: Camilla Marcus of west~bourne
Watching any number of popular cooking shows on TV, it’s fairly common to see chefs in a rage, spewing one sort of emotional outburst or another. That sort of stress might be enough to send most folks running, but not Camilla Marcus. Recalling her own encounters with angry kitchen staff as she worked her way up in the restaurant industry, she could do nothing but laugh if a chef berated her for something as innocuous as a carrot.
This sort of fresh perspective was what helped her to develop west~bourne, a restaurant and market place where staff members rotate through all roles in order to learn and get a holistic perspective of how the business is run. Though the restaurant is temporarily shuttered during the pandemic, the wellbeing of her coworkers is ever at the forefront of Camilla’s mind. In that spirit she has partnered with Robin Hood to found ROAR, providing financial aid for NYC restaurant workers to provide some much needed relief in these tough times.

Diversity Drives Innovation: Robin and Andréa McBride of McBride Sisters Wine Collection
Oceans apart, in two of the most well-respected wine growing regions of the world, two sisters grew up thinking they were only children. When a combination of persistent searching and a dose of magic reunited the two, they were fascinated to learn that not only did they resemble each other in appearance, but also that their upbringing and their interests were remarkably similar.
At the time they didn’t know it, but together Robin and Andréa McBride would create the largest Black-owned, sustainably driven wine company in the U.S., McBride Sisters Wine Collection. Forging ahead in a stuffy industry dominated by older white men, Andréa and Robin have discovered that theirs is not only an epicurean journey, but ultimately one of social change as they work to redefine the field, welcoming women and people of color to the inner workings of the world of wine.

Make Your Priorities Your North Star: Alicia Tillman of SAP
This episode is in partnership with SAP SuccessFactors.
Alicia Tillman always loved writing. As a child growing up on the coast of New Jersey, she spent her formative years by the ocean, surfing and making a plan for how she could parlay her passion for the written word into a successful career. You don’t often find writers on the business-driven Forbes’ “Most Influential” lists, but that’s exactly where Alicia landed – as one of the most influential chief marketing officers in the world. She had successfully turned her interest in writing into that of a contemporary storyteller, marketing for tech company SAP.
Recently celebrating her 6th year at the company, Alicia has pioneered the support of women in the workplace, joining up with Rebecca’s Female Founder Collective to support the initiative Back to Best for Parents, aimed at supporting working professionals and parents who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The wise woman that she is, Alicia acknowledges that much of her success has to do with refining her priorities, and knowing when to look to her support system for help.
Thanks for listening!
The Female Founder Collective is partnering with SAP on a program to help moms and dads parenting during the pandemic. The Back to Best for Parents resource page brings together special offers, resources, and content to support parents by helping them integrate work and life during the tough times of COVID-19. No Brand Does it the Same Way: Celebrity Manicurist and Founder Deborah Lippmann
Anyone interested in beauty products has come across the name Deborah Lippmann before, but few folks know the backstory. She’s made such a name for herself as a celebrity manicurist, and launched her own line of nail polish at the encouragement of such wonders as Mariah Carey, that it’s nearly impossible to think that her start in the beauty world was simply a way to make ends meet while she worked on her passion for music.
A move to New York brought everything together, however, as Deborah found herself working among the likes of Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier, and working with celebrity clientele soon after. It was her knack for color customization, however, that made her a standout among clients and beauty editors. Deborah’s eye for color enabled her to create shades that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Although it hadn’t been her original goal, Deborah let her clients lead the way, and their insistence that she create her own line officially took her from manicurist to entrepreneur. Ever responsive to her customers needs, Deborah Lippmann products are now celebrated as some of the best in the business. These days, everyone from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift is clamoring to collaborate on custom shades for the line!
