Kissinger is Finally Dead! Goodbye to a War Criminal . . . and the war in Ukraine muddles along (G&R 261)

Henry Kissinger died last week after 100 years of death and destruction. More than most, he embodied the foreign policy establishment. Kissinger was an architect of liberal post-war foreign policy and perpetrator of many wars, coups and body counts. He advised every president from JFK to Joe Biden. While many liberals reviled him, he mentored many policy makers in Democratic administrations including Hillary Clinton and current Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In our latest episode, we talk about Kissinger's life and legacy. We talk about Vietnam and Chile and how the liberal world order still functions today as it did in the 60s and 70s when Kissinger was at his peak. We also talked about the continuing bloodshed in Ukraine, more evidence that the U.S. and others scuttled peace talks in the past, and Biden's obsession with wars abroad rather than taking care of problems inside the U.S. We also get into the radical history of the week with a couple examples of anti-Kissingers (including Abby Hoffman and Mario Savio). We close with tribute to the Pogues' late front man Shane MacGowan. --------------------------- Outro- "The Body of an American" by the Pogues Links// + Rolling Stone: Henry Kissinger, War Criminal, Dead at 100 (https://bit.ly/3uObUFm) +NY Times: Henry Kissinger, Who Shaped U.S. Cold War History, Dies at 100(https://bit.ly/3GwwBYZ) G&R describing the crimes of Henry Kissinger//  + G&R: The 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War (https://bit.ly/49XZhaN) + G&R: Chile's 9/11 50 Years Later (https://bit.ly/412GaZ6) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Argentina's "Chainsaw Massacre" Election w/ Dr. Rodrigo Acuña (G&R 260)

Far-right libertarian and dictatorship apologist Javier Milei has been elected president of Argentina, defeating centrist Peronist Sergio Massa. Milei won 56% of the vote, carrying 19 out of 23 provinces. He has been seen on the campaign trail brandishing a chainsaw, which he says he plans to take to the Argentine state. He has vowed to shut down Argentina’s central bank, replace the nation’s currency with the U.S. dollar and crack down on women’s and LGBTQ people’s rights. Both Milei and his vice presidential candidate, Victoria Villarruel, have also denied that Argentine military forces killed and forcibly disappeared an estimated 30,000 people with the support of the United States between 1976 and 1983. In our latest, we talk with Dr. Rodrigo Acuña (@rodrigoac7) about Milei, the election and the wider implications for Argentina, South America and the world. Bio// Rodrigo Acuña works as an independent journalist on Latin America and for the NSW Department of Education. He is the host of Alborada’s Indestructible Podcast. JFK . . . 60 Years of Myths, Lies and Disinformation (G&R 259)

It's been 60 years since JFK was assassinated and a major industry has developed to write about it, question the official story of Lee Harvey Oswald, and most importantly to revise the historical record of John Kennedy to make him seem heroic, a dove who'd seen the errors of American power and the Cold War. Because of this, the Kennedy Conspiracy Clique argues, the so-called Deep State had him killed because he was going soft on Vietnam, Cuba, the USSR, etc. But these JFK Partisans don't base their work on a careful examination of the actual historical record--the archives, collections, documents and other sources of what was happening *at the time.* They rely on anecdotes and byzantine connections that remind one of QAnon. Yet, this version has gotten significant acclaim and media attention, especially on the Left. It is misguided and dangerous. It's making a hero out of someone who put the needs of the military-industrial complex and the empire above all else, and somehow claim that he was an anti-imperialist. JFK was no hero and surely no dove . . . he was a hard-core militarist, a typical Cold War liberal. He was a supporter of Joe McCarthy, he dragged his feet on Civil Rights in order to placate southern Democrats, and he especially waged war on Vietnam, Cuba and many other areas to assert American power. He brought the world to the brink with his recklessness during the Missile Crisis. We've covered this topic extensively over the years so if you want to learn more about the flaws and holes in the apologetics for JFK, check out https://afflictthecomfortable.org/2023/11/22/jfk-60-years-of-myths-and-disinformation/ ------------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// + Afflict the Comfortable: JFK . . . 60 Years of Myths and Disinformation (https://bit.ly/3QMvSaO) +G&R: The Cuban Missile Crisis at 60: Was JFK Really A Hero? "Shut Down APEC!" Anti-War, Labor, Human Rights and Climate Activists Unite Against the Global Elite (G&R 258)

Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area was the center of the political and media world as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) convened CEO summit and heads of state summit to divvy up the global economy for the billionaire class. This included a high profile meeting between Joe Biden and China’s leader Xi Jinping. In response, a movement of movements (consisting of antiwar, labor, human rights and climate activists, etc.) rose up in protest and direct action to the APEC summit. Through the week, we saw unified actions against dictators, billionaires and war mongering American leaders. This overlapped with escalating actions in the Bay Area around Gaza. Scott organized and joined the protests against APEC and this week talks again with Will Wiltschko about the week of action. Howling at the Abyss . . . How the Democrats Moved So Far and So Fast to the Right (G&R 256)

In Green & Red's latest "Scrappy Sunday," we talk about how American moved so far to the right so fast . . . . starting with the 1960s, when Nixon ran a hard-hitting campaign against liberalism, through Carter, who embraced neo-liberalism and abandoned the core of Democratic ideology, through the total buy-in of corporatist policies with Clinton and Obama, the Democratic Party has moved steadily to the right, and in most cases when their position on key issues like abortion rights and gun violence, had majority support. At the end of the day, we can attack the GOP all we want--and there are plenty of bigoted, racist, and sociopathic Republicans to attack, but the failure to offer any alternative or resistance to the GOP and adoption of corporate and conservative ideas is what's sent us off the rails and into the abyss. ------------------------------------------ "Bad Moon Rising" by CCR Links// +G&R: Jimmy Carter is a Liberal Saint Now, Was a War Criminal Then… (https://bit.ly/3ROC3NR) +G&R: Noam Chomsky on Why the Democrats Suck (https://bit.ly/3FLpf3p) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. "When We Fight": The Story of the 2019 LA Teachers Strike (G&R 255)

In Los Angeles, the second largest school district in the United States, 98% of teachers voted to authorize a strike. Filmmakers Yoni Golijov and Yael Bridge shadowed L.A. teachers for five months as they organize and strike, providing a unique first-hand account of collective democracy and labor action, and shedding light on the nationwide teacher strike upswell. Their film "When We Fight" documents one of the largest educator strikes in modern U.S. history in real-time, highlighting the stories and leadership of some of the women who led it, from union leaders to classroom teachers. In our latest, we talk with Yoni and Yael, as well as LA teacher and labor leader Arlene Inouye about the 2019 and 2023 strikes, how they organized, the impacts they had on education and politics and how it fits in with the "Hot Labor Summer" we've been seeing this year. Bio// Yoni Golijov is a nonfiction filmmaker; his producing work has been nominated for the Academy Award and the BAFTA and has won an Independent Spirit Award. Yael Bridge is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker. Her first feature, The Big Scary "S" Word, explores the history and resurgence of socialism in the United States. Arlene Inouye was the chair of the bargaining committee in 2019 and the last contract, 2023, and was integral to leading the strike that the film documents and the incredible solidarity strike that UTLA took this year with their SEIU school co-workers. ------------------------------------------------ Outro- "There is Power in a Union." by Utah Phillips Links// +"When We Fight": https://www.whenwefightmovie.com/ + New Day Films: "When We Fight" (https://bit.ly/3FFT6dJ) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Best of G&R: Cuban Missile Crisis at 60. Was JFK really hero? (G&R 253)

61 years ago this month, in October 1962, Americans anxiously heard news for almost two weeks straight about the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, less than 100 miles away from the U.S. Nuclear War was possible, to some imminent. In this encore episode from 2022, we offer a brief history of the Cuban Missile Crisis and, more importantly, a remembrance and reconsideration of the events of October and JFK actions throughout the crisis. JFK has been praised for his firm resolve, courage, and strength in handling the crisis but the reality is that he was provocative and almost caused a war against Russia. In this episode we'll start by giving a background on JFK's aggression toward Cuba, then we'll offer a brief narrative of the crisis, and finally we'll discuss how Kennedy continued his subversion against Castro's government after the Missile Crisis.JFK was not heroic. His recklessness and need for credibility almost caused a nuclear exchange. The media doesn't tell you this story.
