The Creative & Comedic Side of Being a Pharmacist with Dr. Cory Jenks, PharmD

Dr. Cory Jenks, PharmD is a pharmacist, improv comedian and speaker currently practicing as an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist.  A pharmacist who does comedy?! I know, enough with the stereotypes. Cory has taught, coached, and performed improv comedy for thousands of people. Along the way, he realized that by making himself a better listener, teammate, and empathizer (among many other applicable skills), improv made him a better provider of healthcare.  Now Cory speaks, teaches, trains, and consults on the application of improv comedy to healthcare. By providing in person and virtual talks and workshops on applying the skills of improv comedy, he helps healthcare professionals develop the adaptability and resiliency needed to thrive in the healthcare environment. Cory teaches healthcare professionals how to be more empathetic and create an overall more humanizing healthcare experience by using the same skills as he has as an improv comedian. Additionally, Cory provides consulting to help healthcare organizations apply the skills of improvisational comedy for their employees and trainees.

Profit’s Beyond Prescriptions in 2023 - NCPA Panel Discussion

Community pharmacies are faced with a variety of challenges, especially when it comes to new avenues to increase revenue. While pharmacists are essential for dispensing medications, that is often not enough to maintain daily operations and pharmacy expenses. COVID-19 has also added more pressure to community pharmacies’ bottom line, highlighting the need for increased revenue opportunities for pharmacists.    There are several ways community pharmacies can expand their operations and gain additional revenue. Increasing revenue will require some time and investment, but these options can pay off greatly in the long run. We’ll be discussing practical ways to increase pharmacy revenue.  A successful pharmacy is one that is innovative and opportunistic. After all, even though things may be going well now, that can always change, and a pharmacy owner should have alternative revenue streams coming in to combat any challenges.  Today’s pharmacies must incorporate diverse or alternative revenue opportunities to boost profits. This could mean expanding services such as adherence packaging, specialty pharmacy medications, or partnering with health care providers or hospitals in the area. It can even entail offering tailored services to their patients such as nutrition guidance.   Panelists:  Ronna Hauser, PharmD, Senior VP Policy | NCPA  Susan Rhodus, Senior VP of Contracting | GeriMed  Lisa Faast, PharmD, CEO | DiversifyRx  Tim Mitchell, RPh, Pharmacy Owner | Mitchell's Drugs  Kelby Gorman, RPh, PIC | Moore's Pharmacy  Debbie Marcello, RN, CEO | Happier at Home  Moderator: Todd Eury, CEO | Pharmacy Podcast Network

From ACPHS to Pew Charitable Trust Substance Use Prevention and Treatment | Occupation Station

A strong desire to help people has always drawn Nawshin Ahmed toward health related careers. That desire is what attracted her to ACPHS with thoughts of becoming a pharmacist. But not long into her academic career, Ahmed began to realize that pharmacy was not going to be her career destination. With advice from her thoughtful, knowledgeable and caring professors, Ahmed began to switch her focus toward the field of Public Health. After her 2016 graduation from ACPHS, she advanced to receive a master's in Public Health from the University at Albany, and a master's in Business Administration from Stony Brook University. Her strong desire to help people is now actualized through her work with government and community leaders in shaping health policies through the Pew Charitable Trusts' Substance Use Prevention & Treatment Initiative. She provides technical assistance to states seeking to improve access to treatment for opioid use disorder and to reduce the number of overdose deaths. Nawshin Ahmed’s experiences give her a great perspective on the journey from higher education to career. She tells current and prospective ACPHS students they should know that there are many paths available to them. She also says students should be open to exploring new options and shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way.

The Secret Lives of Pharmacists | Dr. First

Pharmacists are not who you think they are. Tell someone you’re a pharmacist, and they will likely picture you behind a busy counter filling prescriptions. They may not even ask questions about your role because people know what pharmacists do. Or at least, they think they do. Todd Eury, CEO of the Pharmacy Podcast Network and Heidi Polek, RPh., with DrFirst talk about the transforming roles of pharmacists.  When I say, “I’m a pharmacist,” to someone I’ve just met, I hope it will spark some curiosity. I want it to be a conversation starter that begins with them imagining that maybe I’m a clinical pharmacist…or a research pharmacist…or a veterinary pharmacist…or any of the more than 100 career paths a pharmacist can take. Although it’s not well known to those outside the profession, pharmacists have many career options beyond filling prescriptions. We graduated from rigorous pharmacy programs and completed both federal and state licensure examinations, just like lawyers who sit for the bar exam. We became pharmacists to make a difference in healthcare and, most often, for patient care. We’re medication experts, each in our own right. And, just like medical doctors, pharmacists play specialized roles, with many of us completing post-graduate residencies. You may be surprised to learn we work in hospitals, doctor offices, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, law offices, medical research facilities, federal government agencies, health technology companies, and also, yes—pharmacies.
