World Diabetes Day 2020 | Pharmacy Podcast Nation
World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. It is marked every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
WDD is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.
The World Diabetes Day campaign aims to be the:
Platform to promote IDF advocacy efforts throughout the year.
Global driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue
The campaign is represented by a blue circle logo that was adopted in 2007 after the passage of the UN Resolution on diabetes. The blue circle is the global symbol for diabetes awareness. It signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic.
Every year, the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that runs for one or more years. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2020 is The Nurse and Diabetes. Messaging and materials will start to be made available during the second quarter of 2020.

Technology Advances Improving Workflow Accuracy During COVID & Beyond | DrFirst
Like physicians, pharmacists often have to spend a lot of time on administrative tasks that take away from patient interaction, and in the case of pharmacists, sometimes, these tasks can also introduce potential for errors that can threaten patient safety.
In an interview, Heidi Polek, strategic program manager, DrFirst, and Christopher Antypas, owner and president, Asti’s Pharmacy, can address some of these tasks and how technology is making a difference in the pharmacist workflow.
Heidi delves into the potential for errors at the start of the pharmacy workflow (especially amid high volumes) and how new technology (with AI) can help by accurately identifying details of an incoming prescription as well as matching the prescription to the drugs on a pharmacy’s shelves.
Chris discusses best practices for efficient and secure communication, which has become even more critical amid the COVID pandemic as patients do not visit as often and as some pharmacies close their doors to walk-ins. Chris will shares perspective as a practicing pharmacist and how he has leveraged communication tools - like Backline, a secure communication tool (provided by DrFirst) - and other strategies and techniques - during COVID to stay in touch with patients as well as providers.
Our Guests:
Heidi Polek, Strategic Program Manager for DrFirst
Heidi is a registered pharmacist with 30 years of experience, including extensive community pharmacy work in WNY where she managed patient care plans, administered immunizations, and worked closely with area practitioners on patient care initiatives.
