Improving the Front-End of the Pharmacy with Shahida Choudhry PharmD | Pharmacy Crossroads

Can a 300 square foot front-end make a difference in the success of a community pharmacy? Oh yes! Says Shahida Choudhry, PharmD and owner of The Palms Pharmacy in Tampa, FL. Since opening, from scratch, six years ago Shahida has learned a lot, and part of that learning came from a serendipitous relationship with the star of the reality TV show, The Prophet. Following his advice, Shahida totally rethought and rearranged her 300 square foot front end and turned it into a profit center on its own right, and into a magnet that attracts patients to her remarkable pharmacy. The Pharmacist’s Role in Heart Health | RxSafe

RxSafe | Heart Health Panel Discussion Panelists: Sandra Awaida, PharmD Jennifer Marquez, PharmD Dr. Nathan S. Bryan, PhD Brittany R. Messer, PharmD The pharmacist plays an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, mainly through patient education, counseling, detection, and control of specific risk factors. Join RxSafe as we present experienced pharmacists and experts who will share their knowledge of best practices that have a direct impact on heart health outcomes that community pharmacies can implement in their practices. Dr. Messer is a clinical pharmacy specialist practicing with the cardiology department at Marshall Health. She completed residency at the VA Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, where she gained experience with heart failure medication optimization, anticoagulation management and cardiovascular disease state management, such as lipids and hypertension, in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Dr. Messer currently works closely with the heart failure clinic and general cardiology at Marshall Cardiology. Dr. Awaida is founder of PreciGenX, a company that helps other physicians and pharmacists grow their businesses by incorporating CCM, RPM, and PGx services in their practices. She utilizes patient monitoring and evidence-based pharmacotherapy and pharmacogenomics to prevent, predict and personalize medication therapy to improve outcomes for her patients. Dr. Marquez is an experienced, residency-trained, oncology board-certified, and PGx-certified pharmacist. She is passionate about helping patients and providers overcome drug therapy challenges. Dr. Bryan was the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health. Dr. Bryan has published a number of highly cited papers and authored or edited 5 books. He is an international leader in molecular medicine and nitric oxide biochemistry.  Panel Overview:     Cardiovascular disease is highly prevalent, affecting 4 of every 10 Americans, and its costs are expected to exceed $1.1 trillion by 2035, noted from a study published by the Journal of American Heart Association.    The pharmacist plays a relevant role in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, mainly through patient education and counseling, drug safety management, medication review, monitoring and reconciliation, detection and control of specific cardiovascular risk factors and clinical outcomes.   Pharmacists can be a key source of support for individuals looking to manage their heart health. Many of the conditions that increase the risk of heart disease require medication to treat, and taking those medications as prescribed can help reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event.   This discussion is about the panelists experience and knowledge of heart health best practices, suggested supplements like Nitric Oxide, lowering cholesterol, and many other topics which have a direct impact on heart health education and programs for Community Pharmacies to implement in their practices.    What is the link between cholesterol and heart disease?   Many years of scientific studies have shown a close relationship between cardiovascular disease and cholesterol levels. Your doctor may request a lipid profile—a test that shows the levels of LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides in your blood—to assess your risk for developing heart disease.   What about the risk of liver damage from taking statin medications?   The frequency of liver problems with statin therapy is actually quite low. Less than 1 percent of people have to stop taking statins because they develop liver problems. Long-term trials have confirmed the safety of statins—the latest guidelines do not suggest a need to monitor people on statins who have normal liver function. In addition, in some cases where there is evidence of fat deposits in the liver, statin therapy may actually improve liver function tests. Learn more about your ad choices. Medical Affairs will be discussed in this episode of the DarshanTalks podcast. Host Darshan Kulkarni welcomes guest Irene von Hennigs. Irene von Hennigs, Pharma D who is Vice President Medical Affairs at ChemoCentryx talks about her journey and specifically about medical affairs. She is been in the pharma industry and medical affairs for a period of 26 years. While in her consulting career she started her own company partnering with pharmaceutical companies and ChemoCentryx was one of them. There are pros and cons to consulting versus being on board, consulting business was at first for her, and held that position for about six months in ChemoCentryx. She was keen on building medical affairs and fascinated by the science of it. A pertinent question was asked - how do you build a medical affairs team? - on this, the expert answered it depends on the structures, procedures, priorities, and recruitment ( building the team and bringing in the right individuals) She mentioned the process of the structure that has been undertaken by the organization. The one-word answer was 'data', she also mentioned usage of clinical trials data and extracting it, but the prominent part is the right minds putting the effort while finding and training such minds enables building a strong team. The complement science, also known as complement cascade, is a part of the immune system that enhances (complements) the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism, promote inflammation, or immune oneself from the infection. They then talked about building relationships and healthcare is a relationship business for eg., physician relationship with the patient, company's relationship with the physician, etc. Speaking of relationship-building she explained about the company focusing on various databases like publications, speaking engagement, medical leadership, academic institutions, centers of excellence for disease state and one can compile a list for this purpose. Collecting and forming a certain list is performed by any company however giving a human touch and tweaking the list is of utmost importance for building relationships thereon. In the mid-segment, it was asked how GDPR impacts the formation of the company, and the regulatory side was discussed. In closing, she talked about the field medical team should include the right team, the right talent, they have to have the right training and the resources to represent the company Connect with us: Website: http://www.darshantalks.com Law Firm: http://www.kulkarnilawfirm.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/darshantalks ---- Disclaimers: 1. The Changing Role of the Pharmacist: Walgreen’s Dr. Rina Shah, PharmD

The role of the community pharmacist is changing as millions of Americans rely on community pharmacists to provide a new level of care during this healthcare challenged time. Independent pharmacists are able to take active roles to improve outcomes for their patients and lower costs for payers and patients alike. Todays special guest is Dr. Rina Shah, PharmD. Rina is Group Vice President of Pharmacy Operations and Services at Walgreens. Her passion for pharmacy has been centered around transforming patient care to make an impact on patients’ lives as well as empowering those around her to do more. In her current role, Rina leads a team that is responsible for pharmacy operations, services and specialty pharmacy across 9,000+ Walgreens pharmacies. In the last year, Rina has led Walgreens pharmacy response to COVID-19, implementing changes such as waiving prescription delivery fees, initiating proactive outreach by pharmacists to vulnerable patients, and enhancing team member and customer safety protocols. In addition to her current role, she now leads pharmacy operations for COVID-19 vaccination services. Rina helped launch Feel More Like You in 2019, a health and beauty service available at no cost to help people living with cancer manage the medical and physical changes associated with cancer treatment. She also spearheaded the creation of a new team of dedicated pharmacists at Walgreens called Health Outcomes Pharmacists. Often outside of a traditional retail setting, these specialized pharmacists work closely with patients most at-risk of medication non-adherence to address barriers that could prevent them from taking their medications as prescribed. In 2020, Rina led the pharmacy team that secured the first enterprise-wide URAC accreditation in Specialty Pharmacy for more than 300 community-based specialty pharmacies. Often patients with life-changing health challenges need support from their pharmacy team in their local community, this accreditation assures patients of the high standards of care in place as they access their medications and understand their treatment. She began her career at Walgreens in 1998, where she held various pharmacy roles in store. In 2007, Rina joined the corporate support center to lead several pharmacy-specific initiatives across the organization, including the launch of the Walgreens immunizations program chain-wide. The program increased immunization rates among customers covering 7 million people. She has also led sales operations and client services within market access.  Rina was recognized by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of “40 under 40” for her leadership at Walgreens, by Fierce Healthcare as one of 2020’s Most Influential Minority Executives, and by Drug Store News as one of the Top Women in Retail for her business excellence. Rina is actively involved with the UIC College of Pharmacy, APhA, NASP, the CDC and NACDS. She received her Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005.
