View from the Kop: Keeping calm in the title race and Klopp’s defining Champions League moment
The dust has settled on the Merseyside derby and, while it still feels like two points dropped, the Liverpool fans who make up the latest View from the Kop podcast panel are remaining upbeat. And it’s a new-look panel with regular Paul Philbin join by two guests who were visiting the Liverpool ECHO office for the day – Nigel Railton, who is the CEO of Camelot, the operators of the National Lottery, and local lad Ben Woods, who 15 years ago last week scooped £2.5m on the Lotto. As both are big Reds supporters, we invited them on to the pod, and after Ben talks about the night that changed his life, and why Anfield was his only destination to go public on his huge win, they join Paul in discussing where the stalemate with Everton leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side.Talk then turns to the respective run-ins of Liverpool and Manchester City – with Nigel pinpointing one game in particular as being crucial – and why whoever finishes second could well be creating history. Also up for debate is whether it’s better to be chased or be the chaser and whether City are as bulletproof as some would have you believe. The visit of Burnley to Anfield on Sunday is previewed as is the trip to Munich to take on Bayern in the Champions League on Wednesday. Paul, who will be there as part of the travelling Kop, reckons it is a pivotal one for the Reds manager.Liverpool’s and City’s injury problems are also on the agenda, which in turn leads to the talk of the role Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain could play between now and the end of the season.Enjoy. Academy Show: Oxlade-Chamberlain's return, Woodburn's future, and huge week for the Academy
Welcome to the Academy Show, hosted by Paul Wheelock, and featuring our Liverpool FC reporter Ian Doyle, and Post-Game and View from the Kop regular Matt Addison.Matt is also a regular down at the Academy in Kirkby and he joins Paul to talk the big win for the Under 18s that maintained their lead at the top of the U18 Premier League North table – and set up a huge week that will see their fight for glory on three fronts continue. They also talk the incredible scoring feats of Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel, the emergence of Fidel O’Rourke, and the next player Matt believes has the potential to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad.Klopp was at Anfield on Monday night to watch Liverpool Under-23s lose the mini-derby 2-0 to Everton.Ian Doyle was also there – and he gives us the lowdown on a bad night for Neil Critchley’s side. One of the positives to come out of the game was that Ben Woodburn came through 90 minutes unscathed.Ian talks Woodburn’s future before going on to explain why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain didn’t feature as first expected. The good news is that Chamberlain is set to play for the U23s at Derby County on Friday afternoon. But as Ian also explains, the Reds are going to have a little longer yet to get Rhian Brewster back.Enjoy. Blood Red: Jurgen Klopp's trust issues - and why Liverpool's strength is now a weakness
It's the post-Merseyside derby Blood Red podcast and, while Everton may have celebrated a draw in their 'World Cup final', the mood of our panel is downbeat. There's no suggesting that Liverpool have 'bottled' their title chances, but equally there is no doubting that James Pearce, Paul Gorst and Theo Squires, who join host Joe Rimmer for your Monday must-listen, think it was very much two points dropped at Goodison Park. The quartet also reckon Jurgen Klopp was proved right about Everton but wonder why his Reds side could not rise to the challenge, particularly in light of their storming midweek performance against Watford.James goes as far to say it felt like a defeat and, along with Theo, feels he has to sit on the fence when he is asked the big question by Joe. Gorsty, though, is remaining strong.Mohamed Salah was unable to do that in front of goal on Sunday and, while he is being judged by the ridiculously high standards he set himself last season, can what happened versus Everton be put down as a bad day at the office? Or is it something more than that?James, Gorsty and Theo discuss that before paying tribute to the majestic Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender's display against the Blues was absolutely spot-on. But what of Klopp's substitutions? And what does it say that the Reds boss refused to call on either Naby Keita or Xherdan Shaqiri from the bench?Factors beyond Liverpool's control are also debated before the podcast ends on a big positive. Post-Game: 19 unbeaten v Everton but that felt like two points dropped for title-chasing Liverpool
So, a 19th straight match without defeat to Everton. But there was no getting away from the fact that the 0-0 draw at Goodison Park felt like two points dropped in the context of a title race that Manchester City lead once again.Or is that too negative a take on what was always expected to be Liverpool’s toughest remaining away assignment? To try to answer that question, and more besides, we get the thoughts from the press box, the dugout and the stands in the Post-Game podcast. It’s a podcast that starts with the verdict of our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce, continues with every word of Jurgen Klopp’s press conference after the match, and then ends with the opinion of the nine Reds supporters who called into the show – Mark Baker, Matt Whitty, Sam Planche, Matt Addison, Nathan Davidson, Ross Strachan, Alex Watt, Peter Lally and Owen Thomas. Allez Les Rouges: The emphasis shift key to Liverpool's title chances – and Everton's Merseyside derby dilemma
Fancy some pre-Merseyside derby Liverpool FC listening?Well, you’re in luck as Peter Hooton returns with his brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast. For this latest must-listen episode Peter is joined by Steph Jones, an Anfield season-ticket holder and writer, author and journalist Simon Hughes, and Accrington Stanley’s miracle-working manager John Coleman. But before they get stuck into Sunday’s huge Goodison Park clash with Everton, they look back on the 5-0 midweek win over Watford and the big reasons for it, including a fired-up Trent Alexander-Arnold and a new position for Sadio Mane. The panel also examine why the performance was so different to the previous midweek league matches versus Leicester City and West Ham United and wonder whether the Reds can repeat it.Simon gives an interesting tale from the mixed zone while John says the reason for Divock Origi’s re-emergence could be down to the fact that he’s been given a ‘new toy’.Talk then turns to the derby and whether Everton have got the players to park the bus like Manchester United did at Old Trafford last weekend – and, if they haven’t, why that could play straight into Liverpool’s hands. There’s also Brendan Rodgers chat, too.Enjoy. Blood Red: The midfield van Dijk, the Merseyside derby and Rodgers' Premier League return
What a difference a few days make. There was no change in Liverpool's position in the Premier League - top - from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday night. But there is no question that the mood has been lifted by the Reds' five-goal demolition of Watford at Anfield. And it's against that backdrop, with a huge Merseyside derby at Goodison Park to come this weekend, that your latest Blood Red podcast is recorded.Ian Doyle is back in the host's chair and he is joined by our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce and fellow ECHO sportsdesk operatives Sean Bradbury and Theo Squires.James kicks things off by giving us the lowdown on Jurgen Klopp's mood and the big talking points from the Reds manager's press conference that took place earlier in the day. There's also mention of what Marco Silva had to say across town in response to Klopp.Talk then turns to Sadio Mane the centre-forward, Roberto Firmino's fitness, and the reasons behind Trent Alexander-Arnold's magnificent midweek display. The right-back has almost certainly played his way into Klopp's starting line-up for the derby. But who will make up the Liverpool midfield? The panel believe one player, in particular, has now become undroppable, and even go as far to compare his influence to Virgil van Dijk.A reader question then leaves the panel scratching their heads before James recalls his time covering the Reds when they were under the command of Brendan Rodgers, whose return to English football is discussed before the usual team and score predictions.Enjoy. The narrative surrounding Liverpool and the big difference between this season and 2013-14
One point clear at the top with 11 games of what could be a historic Premier League season left to play. As Jurgen Klopp said at his press conference on Tuesday, this is ‘pure opportunity’ for his Liverpool side. But you would have been forgiven for thinking the Reds have bottled their chances of landing a first title since 1990 judging by the reaction in some quarters to Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United. And it’s against that backdrop that season-ticket holders Dan Kay and Paul Philbin – who were both at Old Trafford – join fellow Red Neil Macdonald to record our latest View from the Kop fans’ podcast, hosted by Paul Wheelock. The trio talk the narrative being written and picture being painted outside the confines of Anfield as well as the nerves within Liverpool’s own fan base, which at the weekend at the least, seemed to get to Klopp and his players, too.The debate then turns to the 2013-14 season, the last time the Reds were in the running for the championship. How does this season differ to that one? And why is there seemingly more expectation now? That leads into a discussion about Brendan Rodgers, who since the podcast was recorded, has confirmed his return to the Premier League with Leicester City. Has history been unkind to the manager who went as close as any to leading Liverpool to the title in the past 29 years?Tonight’s visit of Watford is previewed, including who should replace Roberto Firmino if the Brazilian does miss out through injury, and why that should not be Daniel Sturridge, before the panel talk the player who could be crucial to getting Klopp’s fabled attack fully firing again. And, of course, there’s a little bit of Merseyside derby chat, too. Analysing Anfield: Liverpool missing their man with the baton - and how to solve Klopp's pressing creativity problem
It's the second episode of our tactics and statistics podcast, still currently called Analysing Anfield...Host Kristian Walsh (who says the name of the show is growing on him...) is yet again joined by Josh Williams as they dissect the goalless draw with Manchester United, and look ahead to a huge week against Watford and Everton. The duo discuss how United's injuries disrupted Liverpool's gameplan, and how the Reds have a pressing problem with creativity - quite literally. The substitutions are also analysed, while the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold is also explained. The threat of Watford, and how they're the seventh-best team in the Premier League, is also looked at - with a glance towards the Merseyside derby too.A must listen - with feedback always welcome.
