Post-Game: Bobby to the rescue as relentless Reds march on with last-gasp Palace win
How's the heart? Let's face it, this Liverpool side put you through the wringer. But much more often than not, they come out on top. They find a way to win. They live up to the Jurgen Klopp moniker of mentality giants. Saturday afternoon at Crystal Palace underlined that. The Reds weren't at their best and when Wilfried Zaha cancelled out Sadio Mane's opener it looked like they would drop points for only the second time this season. Then Roberto Firmino struck with five minutes of normal to play to earn a 2-1 victory that maintained Liverpool's eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League going into next weekend's visit of Brighton to Anfield. But this podcast is all about what happened at Selhurst Park, and it starts, as ever, with the full-time verdict of our Liverpool FC correspondent Paul Gorst. We’ll then hear every word of Klopp’s after-match press conference, before we get the thoughts of five Reds fans who call into the show – Sam Planche, Matt Addison, debutant Steve Dawson, Nathan Davidson and Matt Whitty. Allez Les Rouges from Dublin: Liverpool's golden title chance and how van Dijk became as influential as Gerrard
It's a special edition of the superb Allez Les Rouges podcast, recorded in Dublin, before host Peter Hooton and regular guest Simon Hughes speak at a show about the latter's excellent new book, There She Goes: Liverpool, A City on its Own: The Long Decade: 1979-1993. The duo are joined by Dublin-based Reds supporter Ed Fitzsimmons, and they start by talking about the links between Liverpool and Dublin before Simon, an author and journalist, speaks about his new job at The Athletic, and his recent interview with Xabi Alonso. That leads into a chat about Fabinho and the Reds' 3-1 victory over Manchester City that opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League. With Jurgen Klopp seemingly having got Pep Guardiola's number, and his side able to win games in many different ways, Simon believes Liverpool will never have a better opportunity to return the title to Anfield. That said, there is some wariness about this Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, but less so about Wednesday's Champions League clash at home to Napoli, whom Peter explains are in the middle of a full-blown civil war. And there's is also time to focus on Virgil van Dijk and how his influence is now on the same level as Steven Gerrard. Enjoy.
