Gerardo Bruna Interview: Lowdown on Thiago Alcantara from ex-Spain teammate | Life as a Liverpool youth prospect dubbed 'new Lionel Messi'
Former Liverpool wonderkid Gerardo Bruna, once dubbed the 'new Lionel Messi', played alongside Thiago Alcantara as the pair came through the youth ranks in Spain. Playing for Real Madrid until he signed for Liverpool at the age of 16, Bruna is the same age as Thiago, who was at Barcelona at the time, and they appeared together in the Spanish team that won the U17 European Championships in 2008. Bruna gives Blood Red's Matt Addison the lowdown on Liverpool's new midfield maestro, signed from Bayern Munich this summer, and explains what it was like to move from Spain to Merseyside as a teenager, while dealing with the 'Messi' tag. Now at Derry City, Bruna has had an interesting career after leaving Liverpool, and he will be watching former teammate Thiago closely as the 29-year-old aims to make his mark at Anfield, and add to the Bundesliga league titles and Champions League trophies he picked up in Germany. Blood Red: Aston Villa inquest after heaviest defeat to Premier League champions | Will Liverpool look to window for new goalkeeper?
It’s the morning after the night before and the Blood Red podcast is here to hold an inquest into Liverpool’s embarrassing 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa – and reveal what business, if any, will be done at Anfield on transfer deadline day. With number one Alisson out for up to six weeks, and his deputy Adrian struggling badly at Villa Park, the Liverpool ECHO’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst joins Ian Doyle, Joe Rimmer and host Guy Clarke to answer the question as to whether Jurgen Klopp will make a last-dash move for another goalkeeper. And what about outs with Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic all being linked with moves away? The panel talk that, too, but only after starting with why exactly it went so, so wrong against Villa. Behind Enemy Lines: Dean Smith's Liverpool homework and Jack Grealish, the Steven Gerrard-like inspiration who would walk into top teams
A hectic start to the season for Liverpool comes to a close this evening, when the champions make the trip to the Midlands to take on Aston Villa in the final Premier League match before the international break. And to get the lowdown on a revitalised and big-spending Villa side, Paul Wheelock speaks to Ashley Preece, the Aston Villa writer for the Birmingham Live website, who tells all about what has been an exciting summer, and exciting start to the campaign, for fans of Dean Smith’s team. Villa, like Liverpool, boast a 100% winning record going into Sunday’s game. But have they any chance of stopping a Reds side that were at their imperious best in Monday’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at Anfield? Paul puts that question to Ashley, plus more about the likes of Jack Grealish and Villa new boy Ross Barkley. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. Blood Red: The Great Liverpool FC Sale | Brewster, Shaqiri, Grujic, Wilson
Rhian Brewster is on his way to Sheffield United and the young striker could be joined out of the Liverpool exit door by Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson before Monday’s transfer deadline. Little wonder, then, that potential sales are the big talking point of the Blood Red podcast as the Premier League champions’ razor-sharp sporting director Michael Edwards looks to balance the books after the signings of Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara and Kostas Tsimikas. Guy Clarke, Connor Dunn and Dan Kay also look back on Thursday night’s Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s press conference from earlier today – and look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa.
