Former Liverpool wonderkid Gerardo Bruna, once dubbed the 'new Lionel Messi', played alongside Thiago Alcantara as the pair came through the youth ranks in Spain. Playing for Real Madrid until he signed for Liverpool at the age of 16, Bruna is the same age as Thiago, who was at Barcelona at the time, and they appeared together in the Spanish team that won the U17 European Championships in 2008.
